About: Seriously, ~Desu isn’t funny. Rule #50 of KnowYourMeme: It needs more Deadpool. No exceptions. Corallary A: It could use some Rorschach too.

...Actually, just mentioning that the exact terminology is mildly debated is good enough for me. Smashing tale, old chap.

...good lord, when will this end?...
User Comment Icon KingStarscream commented on Weeaboo Feb 08, 2010 at 10:23PM UTC
@Girog Sometimes, but not always. I just mean that they call themselves otaku, and that's it - none of the bad, poorly-pronounced Japanese or attempts to "fit in". Many who use the term "otaku" to describe themselves don't know any Japanese and don't pretend to. They like Anime and/or Japan and that's it. However, I will agree that a LOT of them, though not quite the majority, are flat-out weeaboos who curse their native culture for not being Japanese and scream at you for liking anything that isn't Japanese, or if it is Japanese and has been localized.

Get this: According to one article in Cracked (looking for it, will comment when I have it), the first "funny cat picture with caption" image was used as an advertisement... in the late 19th century.
User Comment Icon KingStarscream commented on Cthulhu Feb 01, 2010 at 05:09PM UTC
Cthulhu is too meta to simple be a meme. Never mind the Mythos started by H. P. Lovecraft was written in the early 1900s. Popularity of the character picked up during the 80s, before the net was widespread. If anything, Cthulhu would be a parent article for derivatives.

Not a meme. Just offensive. It didn't start on the internet, get its steam from the internet, or become popular because of the internet. Therefore, not an internet meme. Please rememeber this: even if it is a meme (not, in this case), it has to be an internet meme for qualification for the database.

This is a meme. It is made of epic and win. [citation needed].

Needs more of a description, though the video does pretty much say it all. "Turn it on, and it turns itself off."
User Comment Icon KingStarscream commented on IT PRINTS MONEY!!! Feb 01, 2010 at 04:56PM UTC
Definitely has derivitives. It was pretty minor even at its peak, but has spread. Definitely needs MOAR work, but not quite worth a deadpool til it gets a real chance.

...NO. Deadpool, please.
User Comment Icon KingStarscream commented on . Dec 30, 2009 at 09:24PM UTC
Good lord, Deadpool +Infinity. In case you didn't know this, memes have to have be viral (wide-spread) and have derivatives (ie, knock-offs, parodies). Something funny you found on YouTube is not a meme.
User Comment Icon KingStarscream commented on happy tree friends Dec 30, 2009 at 02:41PM UTC
Just because there are fan characters doesn't make it a meme. It needs parodies and/or derivatives. As has been stated numerous times, just because something is awesome and popular is not a good enough qualification of becoming a meme.

Damn it Redspear, how do you keep making me agree with you?! Seriously though, this doesn't have too many remixes, and for the most part doesn't seem popular anymore (why it ever was is beyond me). Besides, it seemed more like an attempt at a forced meme by mainstream media when it came out. +1 deadpool
User Comment Icon KingStarscream commented on Narutards Dec 08, 2009 at 10:37PM UTC
I don't think this can really be considered an internet meme. It's more of a fandom thing. Can we find some sort of remix/parody, mutations, variations? A YTMND or YouTubePoop would considerably help this out.
User Comment Icon KingStarscream commented on Weeaboo Dec 08, 2009 at 10:29PM UTC
@skankin: Otaku do not have to be Japanese. Almost everyone who goes to an Anime Convention (at least in the US, where I am) call themselves Otaku. Obsession is a big part of it, though. Weeaboos are just the ones who are so obsessed they rage when anime is dubbed because "it ruins the quality" or "the American actors can't convey emotion right." They also tend to think people would get along with them better if they lived in Japan, and randomly use Japanese words for no other reason than they think it makes them sound cool. Generally, it doesn't. I can tell from some of the whining and seeing a lot of weeaboos in my time.

+10 super-confirm. This was a big one back in the day. Needs moar proxies!
User Comment Icon KingStarscream commented on Bob and the Subgenius Dec 08, 2009 at 04:27PM UTC
Considering this was a trend in the 80's and 90's, it would probably be best to explain how his is relevant as an Internet Meme; otherwise this should be deadpool'd. Needs moar info.

Now widespread enough. +1
User Comment Icon KingStarscream commented on Bro Fist Nov 29, 2009 at 06:30PM UTC
I do not beleive a "forced" meme should ever be considered a true meme, unless it actually picks up and takes off in the process of forcing it. This is a rare occurance, however, as true memes are spread due to wide-spread interest and mutation. This has few derivatives, and therefore is either simply viral, or more accurately, spam. A few people push this consistantly to attempt to make it popular, but it isn't picking up. +1
