The ED entry says that the kitten became famous because of its use as a distributor. I recall back in the murky days of the internet this being the first one as well- I had certainly seen no other versions prior. Agreed, video game quotes are a bit awkward. I think you need to draw the distinction between what is a famous quote and what is a meme. 'Princess in another castle' I think would count as a quote, because it's a popular line but you don't really see it anywhere. 'Dangerous to go alone' you often find shopped on images and used as jokes, so I believe it counts as a meme. 'Cake is a lie' is caught in some strange Twilight Zone, neither meme or quote, like some kind of internet zombie...
