Longcat

About

“Longcat is looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong.”

One of the older and more beloved 4chan image memes, Longcat is a cat who is quite long. Indeed his true length cannot be measured by mortal means as it passes through all dimensions of existence simultaneously (or somesuch)

In reality the cat’s name is Nobiiru (のび〜る) and he is indeed quite long (according to this Japanese site)

The Longcat image is rumored to have originated on 2Chan, but this claim has not been confirmed.

Catnarok/Tacgnol

Within the Catnarok mythology (see Ceiling Cat) it is believed that one day Longcat will engage in a mighty final battle with his anti-self, Tacgnol (Protip: Longcat spelled backwards).

Sometimes this event is interpreted as the Apocalypse, while others take a more Taoist approach and consider it to be an eternal battle.

Caramelldansen

Caramelldansen (‘The Caramel Dance’) was a song released by the Swedish popgroup Caramell in 2001 from their album Supergott. Happy Hardcore DJ Speedycake sped it up, creating the Caramelldansen Speedycake remix. Some bright spark looped a GIF of two characters from the game/anime Popotan doing a bunny dance to the chorus, and its popularity exploded.

Caramelldansen quickly spread out of control across the internet as people made over 16,000 of their own parodies featuring other fictional characters performing the dance, and other variations. It was quickly adopted by the anime community and often featured at conventions- seriously, play it at a con and watch as every cosplayer in earshot starts dancing.

Due to the popularity of the song, Remixed Records licensed the track and released their own sped-up version.

In 2008 the Remixed Records Caramelldansen reached #1 on the Japanese International Chart, beating Bon Jovi.

O RLY?

Origin

“O RLY?” originated on the Something Awful forums, where it was used as a deadpan response to anything you found doubtful, unimpressive or just plain dull. On 4chan it was ’shopped onto an image of an incredulous snowy owl and quickly spread out of control.

An animated GIF & Flash version featuring dialogue between 3 birds has emerged, as well as innumerable ’shops.

Controversy

The original “O RLY?” Snowy Owl image macro is based on a photo taken by nature photographer John White, which he posted to the newsgroup alt.binaries.pictures.animals in 2001. He has since sent numerous cease & desists to those using the image.
Photo origin verified here.
Emails from John White to a John Rowly can be found here.

Usage

The correct response to “O ORL?” is “YA RLY”, often with the picture of a stern looking brown owl. The correct response to this, of course, is “NO WAI!”

Just as planned

Just As Planned comes from the anime Death Note. After the main character, Light, pulls off an improbably elaborate scheme, he grins and thinks “Just as planned!”

On 4chan the image is used whenever a gullible/stupid n00b falls into a trap, or anonymous is claiming credit for some crazy convoluted scheme. Conversely, Not As Planned (with an inverted smile) is for when things have gone a bit pear-shaped.
