My 2012 New Year’s resolution: Let the world know that Milhouse IS a meme! (Done.)

Many users have included music on their pages, and while it seemed it would be rather unoriginal to do so myself, I recently thought, “Well, if I’m considering being unoriginal, why not go all the way?” So, my intention is now to include on this page a new cover song on a roughly weekly basis.

The KYM Summer Vidya-Playing Club

@Intergalactic Joe: You’ve got a Virtual Boy and a Dreamcast? Sounds like it might be easier to list which consoles you don’t have. JSR is an interesting suggestion, as it’s a pretty unusual game. Do you know if there is a way to get it free or cheap?

KYM Vidya-Playing Club Game #1- Super Mario World!

RE:platformers I suppose it just takes time to adjust to gameplay styles. I recall when the game was new, most of the basic stuff was second-nature to me, and I only had to adapt to things like controlling Mario while flying. Playing it all these years later, I’m finding it really tough because I haven’t played many platformers recently. So many games these days are 3D free exploration type games, which takes a different sort of skill I’d just started getting used to. Super Mario Galaxies was probably...

The KYM Summer Vidya-Playing Club

@Patrick: “sort’ve” is the correct pronunciation, since “of” is pronounced “uv”; it’s just the wrong spelling. I actually don’t take issue with “sorta”, even though it’s not a real word, since it’s just a typographical representation of the way many people pronounce “sort of” although if one wanted to get really technical, the correct spelling of the the mispronunciation would be “sort o’ working”. I really don’t want to derail this discussion into a grammar thread especially since I must ask… @Captain...

Censorship vs. self-censorship

RandomMan wrote: In the mind of a pervert, this is implied intercourse. I must be a pervert, because that looks nastier than the AT-ATs. And Brucker wouldn’t host such an image on his own website, but does that mean he will apply the same judgement on KYM? Of course not, as he acts differently on both sites. It would have been easy to miss in my previous tl;dr post, but I had a question about this. I indeed do act differently on different sites and in different contexts. There’s probably a larger...

Censorship vs. self-censorship

Finally, someone with a strong(er) anti-self-censorship opinion joins the discussion! I think Encyclopedia Dramatica is a great site, for what it is. In my mind, though, the fact that ED exists is actually useful for keeping a site like KYM (relatively) clean. If you want to see meme pics and such that are outside of KYM’s guidelines, then you can go to ED, 4chan, and similar places. There’s probably even room on the Internet for a “family-friendly” meme site, even more “watered down” than KYM. And we...

Censorship vs. self-censorship

@Patrick: As I think I said in my message to amanda b., my sense of acceptability was feeling rather skewed after looking through several hundred images, a fair portion of which were outside of my personal zone of acceptability, but well within the standards of a site like this. And of course, one’s personal feelings (both emotional and sexual) can get mixed up in the thing; the image in question bears a strong similarity to another image with different characters wearing more clothing. That other image...

(Spontaneous grammar Nazi-ing incoming, feel free to ignore.) You know, it can be pretty annoying for a grammar Nazi like me when someone types “should of” when the proper usage is “should have” or even the semi-acceptable “should’ve”, but I think your usage of “sort’ve” is the first time I’ve seen the inverse of this mistake. I try not to make an issue of grammar in the forums so much, but seriously, “This is [sort have] working thus far!”? That just cracked me up, and I had to comment.

Censorship vs. self-censorship

Well, there’s the general issue of self-censorship, and then there’s the specific issue of KYM’s content guidelines, which have been discussed many times in the past. There’s some appeal to trying to make KYM into a “family-friendly” site, but there are some memes that you just can’t make fit that mold. Rule 34 is an obvious one. The MLP stuff has been a sticking point for a lot of people, too. I have two 9-year old daughters who are fans of the show, and while even the worst of the MLP image gallery...

The KYM Summer Vidya-Playing Club

I know I’m super-late on this, but since I jumped in on the Super Mario discussion, I guess I might as well respond here 1.) SNES and Wii, as well as a decent laptop running Win7, but no game controllers. 2.) I’m usually a big fan of any sort of game that involves puzzle-solving. Generally this means games along the lines of Myst, but there are puzzle-solving elements from all sorts of games. 3.) I won’t be offended if I can’t join in any specific activity, but I’m not likely to spend any money on a...

Censorship vs. self-censorship

I had a much longer version of this believe it or not, but I realized the topic I wanted to address was much simpler than I was making it to be. Super-short version: What is your opinion on self-censorship? Full version: Yesterday, I was cleaning up images on the Katawa Shoujo entry, and I came across an image that, while clearly deserving a NSFW tag, may have been too much for KYM’s content guidelines, but I wasn’t 100% sure. I ended up sending a message to amanda b. for a second opinion. I realized...

Katawa Seiyu, a group dedicated to voicing Katawa Shoujo, has released their first video.

SweetAndDelicious wrote: Unless we continue the thread for the prologue, or a start a new one for it, I guess that means that concludes introduction, unless by some chance we get to hear Shizune as well? Look at the title of the thread; this discussion was supposed to be about Katawa Seiyuu’s FIRST video, so it’s theoretically been derailed for quite some time. I’m inclined to rename this thread “Katawa Shoujo/Seiyuu General” and let it be open for whatever, especially since I’ve had numerous times I...

Emulators General

Continuing my ongoing talk of ancient video games, I recently downloaded a decent Commodore64 emulator to play some of the games I enjoyed as a kid. I know not a lot of people are highly interested in the same sort of antediluvian entertainment I am, but there are some classic games that have an impressive amount of replayability. Also, in my opinion it can be interesting to remember that there was a time that these primitive-looking games were …the standard for 8-bit home computers. Its low cost,...

KYM Vidya-Playing Club Game #1- Super Mario World!

@RandomMan: So I did not recall correctly, eh? I just remembered that there were these five star levels (and it was Star Road, not Star World) that unlocked a secret that led to the special graphics version of the game. My memory is awfully fuzzy, though obviously. I don’t recall how to get to Star Road, nor how much of the game it allowed you to skip. Even very early in the game, in the small amount I managed to play through this time around, it’s clear that there are multiple ways to work through it.

KYM Vidya-Playing Club Game #1- Super Mario World!

Oh, I didn’t know you guys were doing this. As it happens, I just started a fresh replay of SMW about a week ago. It can take a while, since there are not only a lot of levels, but a lot of hidden secrets in the game. Perhaps the best-hidden secret is at the very end of the game. If I recall correctly, there are five “Star World” levels, each of which has a regular exit and a “hidden” exit. The fifth “Star World” level’s “hidden” exit is actually easier to find, and you can fail to notice that the...

"meme" tag glitch

I just thought it was an odd glitch. I suppose it may not matter in the end, since the search box may not even tell the difference between “mème” and “meme”. Your “Pokémon” example may be an example of why it matters, though. Generating 20 unneeded tags seems more of an issue than generating a single unneeded tag. As for point one, I know it sounds silly, but the particular case in which it came up was a picture that was not just an instance of a meme, (which 99% of the pictures on here are) but an image...

Viral Local News Celebrities: Are We Laughing with or Laughing at?

Wow, I think 4ndy has an excellent analysis of the phenomenon that makes a lot of sense. Last night I was considering adding something to this thread about how despite there being whites that end up the subject of memes like this, they tend to be poor and/or under-educated. I wasn’t able to put it all together into something meaningful, though, and I’m actually glad because the above post is probably more readable than I would have managed. These memes don’t show racism, at least not directly. They arise...

Katawa Seiyu, a group dedicated to voicing Katawa Shoujo, has released their first video.

Yeah, like I said, they’re both great voices, I think my expectations are just a bit too high. Hanako’s tricky anyway since obviously she’s so quiet. I wonder, does anyone know what sort of range of sample lines they used for some of the characters like Hanako that have a serious shift in tone throughout the story? When I was putting together the Jigoro recording, I realized it was relatively easy because his character doesn’t really evolve with the story, while in contrast, I’d say Hanako’s lines should...
