I’ve got two videos for you today (don’t worry, they’re short) They’re not even in the same musical genre, the theme today is street music. You’d be surprised what kind of talent you can find just strumming away on the street corner (and I don’t just say that because I myself am a street musician!)

Flamenco Guitar Jam-Random Spaniards

Flamenco guitar is, like jazz, another genre I really want to dig into but haven’t. Flamenco frustrates me because in order to play it well, you need to grow the fingernails on your right hand out to serve as picks. I already specialize in American fingerstyle guitar however, which calls for short nails in order to pluck the strings with the finger-pads. I’ve tried making due learning to play Flamenco with short nails, but it really doesn’t sound nearly as good.

Blues Jam-Grandpa Elliot

This guy is just great. Blues is an extremely simple style of music, but goddamn if it isn’t a ton of fun.

Even though they’ve had little direct infuence on each other, Flamenco and the Blues are actually rather similar. Both are native folk styles of music coming out of the western harmonic tradition, both have a special harmonic form ubiquitous to the genre (Blues is known for the 12 bar blues progression, Flamenco for the Andalusian cadence), and both are primarily guitar and vocal based music. Also, both are awesome.

Oh look, someone who shares my enthusiasm for video game music!

I actually used to be a very avid gamer when I was younger, and it was video games that pushed me to take up the study of music. I picked up my first instrument from guitar hero, and even though I’m only a casual gamer these days, I still enjoy learning and analyzing pieces from video games. Some of them are quite ingenius.

I’m assuming you watch Extra Credits as your explanation on the history of video game music seems to derive from their lecture on the subject. Remember that the old 8-bit composers wrote music that was more melodically interesting because they were very restricted. It’s not so much that modern game music is bad so much as it’s bad on its own, game composers now focus more on writing “atmospheric”, music to play in the background and set the mood without distracting from gameplay.

I was actually going to show you some video game music myself, but seeing as you’re already experienced in it, I’ll show you a classical piece that is tangentally related.

The Flying Dutchman Overture-Wagner

Video Game music is very much indebted to Wagner who, in his operas, really innovated with the concept of the leitmotiffm, aka a specific melody to be associated with certain characters, situations etc. The one game series that really impresses me with its use of Leitmotiffs is the legend of Zelda series, in particular Wind Waker. The way established themes are worked into new musical setting is just awesome. Send me a private message if you’d like to discuss video game music some more, I have a lot to say on the subject.

As a matter of fact, I haven’t heard of that piece you were talking about. I don’t listen to much brony fan music because, you know, it tends to kind of suck. You shouldn’t assume like that, when you assume, you make an ASS out of U and ME (ha ha, comedy…)

Anyway, one of the great things to come out of the 20th century was the perfection of the modern orchestra. For hundreds of years, the orchestra kept getting larger and larger until you got to the late Romantic orchestra, a bloated and disgusting thing with a sound made muddy by the sheer mass of instrumentation. The modern orchestra was the first in the orchestration tradition to actually scale back on instruments, and the result is a perfect blend of tone colors and proportion. This perfect orchestral blend is a great boon to all the arts which can make use of it.

So for today’s music, we’ll be listening to some Mingus. I would really like to get more into myself is jazz. Check out this sexy beast.

I’m a bit of a Hibernophile myself, and I’ve always been interested in the music and folklore of Ireland. This song and Celtic music in general tends to itch both those scratches for me, providing a nice folklorey setting with the lyrics and all the fiddle trills you can handle.

There’s really nothing better than starting your day with a little Bach, it’s like drinking a cup of strong, pure coffee. I hope you enjoy.

This piece actually has an interesting history. It’s the second work out of Bach’s celebrated “Well-tempered Clavier”, a selection of 48 preludes and fugues for solo keyboard. See, Bach was alive during the time of an interesting debate in music, the debate of tempered tuning vs. Just intonation. Basically, it’s impossible for any kind of fixed pitch instrument (think piano or fretted guitar) to play with all its notes perfectly in tune with each other, and there was a debate raging as to which notes should be out of tune. The prevelant tuning up to this point was just intonation, wherein all the ‘main’ intervals are kept perfectly in tune with each other at the expense of the more remote intervals sounding absolutely horrendous.

Bach was an advocate of the new system of equal temperament, wherein all the notes are tuned equally, meaning that they’re all slightly (albeit tolerably) out of tune. The benefit of this system is that it allows for one to change key within the course of a piece. Bach wrote the well-tempered clavier as an argument for how awesome the new possibilities presented by equal temperament are. Bach systematically demonstrates in each key all the new chordal and harmonic possibilities presented.

The well-tempered clavier shut the book on that debate. Since the time of Bach, equal temperament and the key changes it allows for have been standard in classical music.
