Commented on 48÷2(9+3) = ?

(pt. 1)

As the person who basically wrote this article, I strongly urge you guys to reread the analysis under “Solutions.”

If you can’t be bothered, here are the things one needs to take away:

1) 48/2(9+3) is a badly formed expression. The whole debate is akin to giving a linguist an ambiguous, weird sentence, and then asking them to give you back a clear, unambiguous answer about what the correct interpretation is. Mathematics is about unambiguity and facts, and something like this should be sidestepped by rewriting it as 48/(2(9+3)) or (48/2)(9+3).

2) If you still want to argue, the standard order of operations is generally and conventionally defined to be:
a) Parantheses / brackets (inside to out)
b) Exponents/roots (generally right to left; a^b^c = a^(b^c)
c) Multiplication/division (left to right)
d) addition/subtraction (left to right)
Multiplication before division is not really arguable since division is just multiplication expressed in a different way (* the reciprocal), so they’re the same thing; just as subtraction = adding negative and nth root = 1/nth power.

3) If you still don’t like that, you can argue for implied multiplication having just as high of precedence as parantheses, That is, 5(6+7) has higher precedence than 5*(6+7). Many, if not most, people already naturally do this anyway, and tend to see something like 5x as being one single entity, instead of breaking it into 5*x.

2) & 3) are pretty much all you can legitimately argue, and they’re based on convention and popular opinion, which can be ambiguous. Take 1) for the high ground.

Just curious if you were still interested in God Horse (神马都是浮云), or if someone else has already created an entry for it…

… I haven’t been on this website for a while if you hadn’t noticed, so i’ve not sure who’s working on what or what entries have been created o_e

As of now, I still retain all my mod powers, including entry editing, banning users, forum moderating, and image/video deletion n_n

But i decided to leave because of some personal reasons, and some not so personal reasons :T

I love it when the Gorillaz get fearlessly experimental in their music.
