This mod is harassing me.

That’s why saying someone doesn’t contribute is subjective, and exactly why I would think it a bit scary to assume that someone else has nothing to contribute to the website, and then threaten bans. Especially when you consider people who only post in the forums and who just talk or want to have fun, what constitutes a contribution is extremely subjective. That’s why I brought it up – because the way we treat users shouldn’t depend on whether or not users believe they contribute something “constructive”...

This mod is harassing me.

I learn from my mistakes That’s all the more to give benefit of the doubt, or at least consider it. hasn’t done anything constructive and doesn’t seem to get it. He’s also 4 days old. Most people don’t do anything constructive within their first 4 days, and learning over a long period of time is not unusual (see RussianFedora aka Piano). Also, incidentally, others have argued the same for you.

This mod is harassing me.

I’m just lurking, as well as a former mod (actually just in title, but still I’m trying to just be a regular user), so my opinion carries less weight. Nonetheless, I feel this is kind of harsh? I remember I used to have a lot of trouble banning RaptorJesus and there were some who wanted RussianFedora (now Piano) banned – and they weren’t because the admins believed they could get better and that permabanning and sometimes banning was extreme. I thought they were trolling, and maybe they were, but...

KYM Mathematics General, AKA the Genius Thread

-1 = 1 Hm, I think the error’s in √(-1/1) = √(1/-1) --> √(-1)/√(1) = √(1)/√(-1). Everything before that point is consistent, but √(-1)/√(1) = √(1)/√(-1) is already inconsistent: √(-1)/√(1) = √(1)/√(-1) i / 1 = 1 / i i = -i … However, normally you can split radicals √(xy) into √(x)√(y) unless both x and y are negative; not sure why it’d be different for division, but I can’t see anything else wrong with the “proof.” Arrrrgh… Just because this is a math thread doesn’t mean you can throw grammar out...

KYM Mathematics General, AKA the Genius Thread

Ehh? Really? I was looking at 1), seriously wondering what was wrong with my logic, and you’re telling me it’s just a terrible question? @_@ araegaerg I figure that base 12 would be best since it’s only two off from our current base, and i’m… pretty sure it’s better than 10 in most respects because of it’s divisors :o There’s always the fact that our weights and measurements were in base 12 (12 inches per foot, 12 months), and for good reason. 60 is also nice, but 60 symbols is not so fun to deal with… I...

KYM Mathematics General, AKA the Genius Thread

1) Well, the three men are paying for both the hotel’s expenses and the bellhop’s greed. Together, the hotel has $250 and the bellhop has $20, so in total they have $270. The men have paid $90 each, so in total, they paid $270. So clearly no money has actually disappeared. I’m so confused as to why you’d add the money that you’ve spent to the money that was given to the bellhop; it would seem that the proper way to account for totals is to consider the money given to the bellhop as part of your expenses....

It is a mystery

It’s a 4chan inside joke. It’s derived from this board: /z/ Then it disappeared and linked to a… beecock. The image is very nsfw, but is essentially a photo of a dick with stuff drawn on it. Then that disappeared, and moot made the board redirect to that image, “it is a mystery” … I think. I forget the details. edit: jk it’s older than that, and is derived from SA: it is a mystery But i do think it had some significance in 4chan history though, which makes sense seeing as 4chan was full of SA stuff at...

KYM Mathematics General, AKA the Genius Thread

Re: Brucker/In Soviet Russia, meme force you! I think I just remembered you as being mathy :< Re: pascal’s triangle I recently found a sequence of sequences while working on a combinatorics problem on project euler (having to do with counting numbers whose digits left-to-right strictly increase or strictly decrease), and again in calculating geometric-like infinite series that sum up to 1/(1-x)^n for some integer n. What I somehow got was a lesser known way to create pascal’s triangle o_o; Let the...

KYM Mathematics General, AKA the Genius Thread

I know it’s been beaten to death into number theory students, but conjectures like Merten’s conjecture, Polya’s conjecture, skewes number, euler’s sum of powers conjecture, show how conjectures can hold up for really large numbers and still be wrong. Ex: it would seem that li(x) < pi(x) for all x, but the first counterexample is at most e^(727.95133)…. which is like… 300 digits o_e That is a pretty cool trend though. I know someone mentioned that the collatz conjecture, on a deeper level, suggests...

KYM Mathematics General, AKA the Genius Thread

So uh, are we just circlejerking over our interest in math or what? :o Maybe we could direct it to more recreational math instead, or maybe general non-googleable questions we don’t feel like asking on stackexchange because they’re scary, or project euler (anyone want to be friends on project euler btw?), or whatever, or else i feel this thread will die quickly ¯\(-_o)/¯ I’m not sure what everybody’s level of math knowledge is, but here’s a question my friend and I were discussing. Suppose you have n...

About IRL memes on this site...

As far as strict policies go, yes. As far as discussion, points of contention, or even general guidelines go, I wouldn’t say that. I feel like it’s too dismissive and simple to say that older admins’ opinions don’t matter just because they left (i mean, my opinion is still vaguely relevant… right guys? …guys? ;_;). They’ve dedicated way too much to this site, particularly Chrismen who was at the beginning shaping the site’s direction, to cease be credible sources of insight anymore. Nevertheless, iirc...

Video Games as Art General: A Little More Specific Than Usual

I know it’s not really art in the traditional sense, but couldn’t art just be expanded anything that is constructed and that brings out an emotional response or a sense of meaning, including the aesthetics of the construction itself? Seeing as “anti-art” is now considered art, it doesn’t even have to be intended to be art to be art. I personally find math, computer science, and engineering to be extremely beautiful, and when they are at their best, it is something of a form of art. People have to...

Number of the Beast

Random, srs (and maybe even fun? :D) facts out of nowhere about the number of the beast: Gematria was the Jewish system of assigning names or phrases to numerical values. Interestingly, if you take the name “Neron Caesar,” and translate it into hebrew( נרון קסר), then apply gematria, you end up getting 666. If you take the other version of his name (נרו קסר), you get 616. Seeing as the number of the beast is considered to either be 666 or 616, this is probably not a coincidence. Also Nero, if you don’t...

Shrek is dreck / check yourself before you shrek yourself

Shrekchan: http://shrekchan.org/ Shrek yourself: Shrek is dreck: How, when, where, why?? I dun really keep up to date with the young’ins memes anymore, so I have very little to contribute, and the “shrek” keyword is annoying since results point to the movie usually. But i was hoping there would be people who do know. I know this isn’t new phenomena or anything, just very surprised you guys don’t have an entry on it o_o The whole phenomena also seems to have came in at a lot of different angles too:...

The "Is it a meme" checklist

If they don’t meet the criteria yet still submit their entry, do they make a target for a ban? Would you want to punish users for trying to contribute to the community? That’s just rough man. This. I think being less strict about entries relative to the user is a good idea, especially in context with the meme (too little information) or the user (at least they started it up, and perhaps included good, difficult to find information, even if the entry is not amazing). I made a thread a while ago similar to...

Windows XP Sounds

If you mean YTMND fad, it’s over here >> http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/os-soundbytes-remixes although it desperately needs work If you mean XP sounds/remixes in general, it’s probably memetic yeh :o I would guess XP sound effects are in that weird transition period where they can use piano/percussion sounds, but it’s not quite clean enough to sound natural – http://youtu.be/M-fTqAMND7g – leading to unique sound effects fun to remix…

Alpacalypse

Seeing as this pun is not the most difficult to come up with, seems like it’d be difficult to come up with a definite origin; probably predates the internet, even @_@ Anyway, I have no idea what this is, and I don’t want to (sep 12 2006) http://www.flickr.com/photos/42311564@N00/90680971/ << (Jan 2006) There is an actual farm, apparently (2004) google trends seems to indicate that any hint of memetic spread ~ 2010 Seeing as there’s probably a very vague origin, and it is becoming more popular now,...
