TL;DR This is the first video in a thirteen part series, so you can’t really pass judgement yet. Most of the games you mentioned don’t count as they’re plot-less spin-offs. Those that do count still don’t represent either character as a strong independent lead. I don’t agree with everything Sarkeesian said, but I have to be fair here.

(Continued)As for Zelda, you don’t really count the CD-I games of all things. For starters, they wasn’t made by Nintendo. Secondly, they aren’t Canon. Thirdly, no matter what side of the argument you’re on, there is no hope bringing up those games. And the Smash Bros. games fall into the same point that the sport mario games do (Brawl aside for a moment) They don’t really have a plot besides beat everyone up. As for Brawl, they still don’t really count. For starters, all Ninty characters are playable in it, whether they’re Heroes, Villains or Damsels. Secondly, both Peach and Zelda are captured/possessed in the game multiple times, so they’re still not exactly strong and independent. And I don’t know why you brought up Midna, she wasn’t even a damsel, she was a sidekick. She might yet bring up Midna in a future video.

She showed that she was going to talk about Super Princess Peach eventually (this video was about Damsels in Distress, so she will probably cover that in a later video). And I wouldn’t exactly call her a strong independent character in that. CRYING is one of her main attacks. Sure she forgot to mention Super Paper Mario and Mario RPG, but her main point was that Peach has never really was the star of her own game (again, besides Super Princess Peach). In those games, she was more of a sidekick. And how can you call Peach a strong independent character in the Kart/Sport games? They didn’t even have a plot, so of course she doesn’t get kidnapped. You can’t really count those, considering they’re sport spin-offs.

I wish. The sad truth is that KyoAni couldn’t care less about a western fanbase. Unless we export DVDs straight from Japan, it doesn’t benefit them.
