@Landmark356 As somebody who was *very* skeptical of 'Balloon Boy's' inclusion here when it first happened, this definitely counts as a notable meme. Whether it will still be culturally relevant or if anyone will use any of its catchphrases next year is a different question entirely. This was a media-driven event that turned into a participatory one. It had a meteoric rise, almost immediate saturation, and a really fast burnout. All of these things make it worthy of our attention. As memes start to spread faster and with more media involvement, we need to take the time to better understand the difference between media attention and real, peer based enthusiasm. We really need to add some variability to the way that we classify memes. @Jamiedubs has been talking about adding a Strong Meme <----> Weak Meme slider to each entry as a way of further classifying these things. It'll be interesting to see how people use this.

@tedcorp. It's a funny incident and the video is great (I lol'd), however we need to wait a bit to see if anything else develops. Right now, it's just an interesting news story and three images. As @ChrisMenning says, more has to happen first.

The problem isn't with talking about rape and murder, the problem is the overtly politicized phrasing of the entry. The tone of the first few paragraphs need to be changed. Some of the detail is interesting but much of it is irrelevant.

I also feel like I saw the 'Advice' variation linked to memegenerator before anything else. I think this entry could exist outside of the Advice Dog family if it concentrated on the older original 'Success' motivational/'Fuck Yeah'/'Ima fuck you up' versions.

Mainstream is never the issue as much as it is contextualization and/or recontextualization on the internet. Example: Christian Bale Rant, Tom Cruise Kills Oprah. But the question of astroturfing is a real one. I still cringe at the phenomenon that was Snakes on a Plane.

Odd, I'm now getting 57k results on a different network. As an image based submission, I, too, don't see strong enough evidence in support of this, especially since much of the original artwork seems to have been drawn by the same hand. @captainblubber I am sad to suggest that the Kids in the Hall 'men having sex with cars' sketch is only tangentially related to 'dragons having sex with cars'. It’s more like taking someone’s temperature to confirm a fever. The link set is pretty diverse so it’s had an interesting spread beyond its point of origin. I can’t wait to see the research on this one.

Needs way more research. Also, the YouTube Poop seemed to be an aftershock of the original video, but not the primary focus of activity around this meme.
