yatta commented on Balloon Boy Nov 19, 2009 at 05:41PM UTC @Landmark356 As somebody who was *very* skeptical of 'Balloon Boy's' inclusion here when it first happened, this definitely counts as a notable meme. Whether it will still be culturally relevant or if anyone will use any of its catchphrases next year is a different question entirely. This was a media-driven event that turned into a participatory one. It had a meteoric rise, almost immediate saturation, and a really fast burnout. All of these things make it worthy of our attention. As memes start to spread faster and with more media involvement, we need to take the time to better understand the difference between media attention and real, peer based enthusiasm. We really need to add some variability to the way that we classify memes. @Jamiedubs has been talking about adding a Strong Meme <----> Weak Meme slider to each entry as a way of further classifying these things. It'll be interesting to see how people use this.
yatta commented on I was avoiding a pelican Nov 13, 2009 at 03:22AM UTC @tedcorp. It's a funny incident and the video is great (I lol'd), however we need to wait a bit to see if anything else develops. Right now, it's just an interesting news story and three images. As @ChrisMenning says, more has to happen first.
yatta commented on Auto-Tune Nov 12, 2009 at 05:27AM UTC @Crazkshark70 Check out these two interviews with Bangalter and de Homem-Christo from Daft Punk: Remix: Robopop DJ Times: Interview with Daft Punk The talk about their use of the effect and understanding of Auto Tune as a tool.
yatta commented on Balloon Boy Oct 16, 2009 at 04:05AM UTC Agreed. Give it time. Just b/c it's all over CNN now doesn't mean it'll have notability even a week from now. That said, nice entry Pl0x

yatta commented on The Philips CD-I Oct 09, 2009 at 06:06PM UTC @Walter K: Just copy the embed code from each YT video and replace the url with the embed code instead. Good first stab at history -- it'd be nice to find more info to give it a little more context.
yatta commented on Did Glenn Beck rape and murder a girl in 1990? Sep 18, 2009 at 02:10AM UTC The problem isn't with talking about rape and murder, the problem is the overtly politicized phrasing of the entry. The tone of the first few paragraphs need to be changed. Some of the detail is interesting but much of it is irrelevant.

yatta commented on Microsoft sucks at PhotoShop Aug 27, 2009 at 05:56AM UTC > what is this called btw? Forced TechCrunch meme. srsly, most news headlines include Microsoft + Photoshop so 'Microsoft sucks at Photoshop' is pretty fitting.
yatta commented on I Hate Sandcastles / Success Kid Aug 26, 2009 at 11:38PM UTC I also feel like I saw the 'Advice' variation linked to memegenerator before anything else. I think this entry could exist outside of the Advice Dog family if it concentrated on the older original 'Success' motivational/'Fuck Yeah'/'Ima fuck you up' versions.
yatta commented on Sparta Remix Aug 26, 2009 at 11:34PM UTC Good media in the submission but I agree with @chris menning -- this should be a subsection of the larger Sparta entry.
yatta commented on Goodtimes virus Aug 26, 2009 at 11:32PM UTC @real genius: Great meme, needs more research. Reads like WP copypasta. Start with the goodtimes FAQ perhaps?
yatta commented on Zidane Aug 26, 2009 at 10:08PM UTC Mainstream is never the issue as much as it is contextualization and/or recontextualization on the internet. Example: Christian Bale Rant, Tom Cruise Kills Oprah. But the question of astroturfing is a real one. I still cringe at the phenomenon that was Snakes on a Plane.
yatta commented on The Llama Song Aug 26, 2009 at 09:42PM UTC Heh. I remember this one. @rofle coptere: ABS is fine as a source but we need more links/citations. @redspear74: are you able to do more research and fill out the entry so we can confirm it?
yatta commented on Surprise Buttsex Aug 26, 2009 at 09:17PM UTC @saiya-jin This will definitely be confirmed but not until the entry is filled out more. Needs more research.
yatta commented on Dragons having Sex with Cars Aug 18, 2009 at 03:08PM UTC Odd, I'm now getting 57k results on a different network. As an image based submission, I, too, don't see strong enough evidence in support of this, especially since much of the original artwork seems to have been drawn by the same hand. @captainblubber I am sad to suggest that the Kids in the Hall 'men having sex with cars' sketch is only tangentially related to 'dragons having sex with cars'. There are quite a few man + sex + "with car" stories irl: Man admits to having sex with 1000 cars http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/2000899/Man-admits-having-sex-with-1000-cars.html Mechanic: I have sex with cars http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article21242.ece Man accused of sex act with car http://www.krqe.com/dpp/news/crime/crime_krqe_albuquerque_man_accused_of_sex_act_with_car_200908131357 Sex with car http://www.closeronline.co.uk/RealLife/Reallifestories/sex-with-car.aspx Guide to Sex with Cars (for males) http://blackroses.textfiles.com/sex/sex-cars.faq
yatta commented on Dragons having Sex with Cars Aug 18, 2009 at 02:30AM UTC I see less than 600 results for http://www.google.com/search?q=%22dragons+having+sex+with+cars%22 and less than 1k for http://search.yahoo.com/search?p="dragons+having+sex+with+cars" That being said, massive search results alone do not make the meme. It’s more like taking someone’s temperature to confirm a fever. The link set is pretty diverse so it’s had an interesting spread beyond its point of origin. I can’t wait to see the research on this one.
yatta commented on Rainbow Road Aug 16, 2009 at 06:00PM UTC Needs way more research. Also, the YouTube Poop seemed to be an aftershock of the original video, but not the primary focus of activity around this meme.
