http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/im-with-coco I’ve been following the growth of this over the weekend. A couple of observations: What started out as a poster with a striking resemblance to the Shepard Fairey “Hope” poster (meme), turned into a tongue-in-cheek #teamcoco Twilight reference (meme-ish), is now a Facebook group with 300k+ followers and a Twitter hashtag campaign that’s actually organizing IRL protest rallies. None of that by itself is particularly interesting, but I am intrigued by the number of...
Nothing here smacks of Anon. This is old school like chain mail. What’s interesting about this is the low barrier to participation (one word status update) and implication that participation automagically makes you in on the joke (and therefore a winner.) While that’s nothing new, it’s rare to see it in a mainstream FB “meme”. It’s the same kind of game scenario that makes certain image macros so rewarding. And it’s why so many people get upset when they think you’re giving away the game. It’s like...
I started a thread about this, not realizing that this one existed. From my post: I watched this gain momentum yesterday but didn’t post about it. A message forward telling women to post a single word status update stating what color bra they were wearing. It was pushed as something only women could do “baffling the men.” It was also forwarded under the guise of being a campaign for breast cancer awareness. I’m still looking into its origin however it’s gained about a quarter ton of media...
@memedude Do you want to tackle either of those yourself?
Chad Wardenn was dropped for being a poorly written entry. If you’d like to start from scratch, by all means, go for it.
@griff Responding to the OP. The moar your knoe….
‘Derivatives’ is a very loose term. As it stands now, it’s mostly a viral with a bunch of memetic activity (the forum posts on both 4chan and elsewhere) but it’s still unripe fruit. We need to wait to see what it develops into (a catchphrase? an image macro?) From there we should be able to accurately predict whether it’ll actually be notable (memorable) over a significant period of time.
Stickied until we get the FAQ up.
Hmm. Unless somebody asks Jim Kaposztas (the creator of the first intentional AMV back in 1982) directly, I don’t know if anyone can claim that MAD led to AMVs. Sure, they look the same and they both use Japanese-origin media as their raw material but that isn’t conclusive. More importantly, they had completely different intents when they first developed. MAD movies started as a remix video art that was sometimes nonsensical, sometimes a commentary on the state of culture or politics (satire or...
Viral from earlier last year (my sister forwarded it to me back in June) that seemed to make a resurgence (eBaums?) last month. I’ve seen several of these uploaded under ‘smoking man shower’ ‘crazy man shower’ etc. I went back and looked for the copies and found that Frank Lawson (Lia Dawson) made a copyright claim on one of the instances of this video last month: I wonder what the viewcounts on that instance was. :-/
Irene doesn’t count. She’s an insider. ;-) Who among the non-admin, not-married-to-Jamie active users has been here the longest?
@griff http://xchat.org/download/ @Dave http://colloquy.info/ Instructions on how to log on to irc for both.
@Dave: There is no plan to train a secret race of perfect internet scientists through infiltrating peoples’ dreams. PROJECT LUCID does not exist. @Admins: ROJECTPAY UCIDLAY has been compromised. Emergency meeting in irc NOW!
@everyone: thanks. That was fun, although they had to cut what was a 30 minute conversation down to just 5. I’m sure it was necessary as I probably went on and on about the serious stuff. @Joefilms: You would have loved some of the stuff that didn’t make it in there: - LOLCats/Cat Macros should be considered the meme of the decade as it started within a subculture, codified (LOLspeak, ICHC, Memegenerator), became a mainstream hit, and despite it’s popularity and commercialization, it continues to stay...
@rage guy: Good idea although we’ll need a solution that works across categories be they viral videos, image macros, or anything else. So far we’ve decided that we’re going to create a standard template for submitting entries, a stickied I’m 12 and What Is This? thread and a FAQ. While I don’t think we’ll have a quiz, we do need to figure out our method for indoctrinating new researchers into the ‘institute’. Likewise, there’s talk about promoting more people to the rank of MemeDB admin, but Chris, Brad,...
‘I Drink Your Milkshake’ definitely belongs in the MemeDB @Androxine Vortex: That particular entry was deadpooled because it was submitted without any research. If you want to take the lead on it, please go ahead and create a new entry for it.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/expresident/the-30-most-important-cats-of-2009 Many of the cats in that list aren’t from 2009. (Perhaps they don’t mean that every one of these cats debuted in 2009 but the title makes it seem so.) Can you spot which ones don’t belong? (Feel free to use the MemeDB as a cheat sheet.)
I can’t believe somebody made edible marzipan babies. This is so wrong. Somebody needs to email this to every 40-60 year old they know. edit: Sorry. Old ‘mommy’ meme reference. Image linked for context.
