Jamie and Greg are working on a fix for this. They’re also working on changes to show authorship, karma, collaborative editing of meme entries, and, of course, the new forums. But they’re also working on multiple projects at once (Rocketboom, Magma, Know Your Meme). So the best thing we can do now is to be patient.

@Sam Lehman: Personally, I wouldn’t consider it noteworthy yet as, so far, it hasn’t developed its own form beyond just the spread of voicemails set to music. When coming across media like this, we have to ask ourselves “will this be interesting or referenced weeks from now? Years from now?” Even if they are, will it really be that funny? Or will it end up being a completely weak meme? If you get a chance, check out @Joefilms response to this thread about the coverage of memes in pop culture. What he...
Jamie and Greg are finalizing the new forums first. After that, it’s MemeDB 1.7 time.
This has been the week where KYM starts feeling its growing pains. Some folks are starting to troll but everyone seems to be doing a decent job of keeping them in check (beesandjam’s experience aside.) We’ve also seen an explosion in off topic threads. While that’s really not a big deal, it does make it harder to sift through and find the threads that are specifically about the MemeDB (or site issues for that matter.) I expect the new subforums should clear this up. @beesandjam: Check back in a bit...
@Genius Now I need to go and check…. I can’t remember if the decision was to go with a general ‘Viral’ category or ‘Viral Video’ specifically.
Good idea. As @Real Genius said, it’s on the list. Likewise, I wonder if we should have a separate way of indicating that something is an ‘internet phenomena’ as separate from ‘meme’.
7MM views in a month. Appearances on CNN and other mainstream media. No real derivatives that I know of except for an animated gif (not that derivatives are the only thing that signifies notability.) So what counts as notable nowadays?
This is the video that keeps on giving. I’ll get the mp3 up on Rocketboom this weekend. There’s also an extended mix floating around here but it needs some work.
To be clear, there are submissions to the MemeDB that are not a meme, forced meme, or just completely not relevant beyond one person and three of their friends. Those memes should drown in a boiling pit of deadpool. (To help with that, check out @ChrisMenning’s King’s Supression post near the middle of this thread.) But for the stuff that still counts, we need a way to better express and explain a entry’s notability. This slider is just one suggestion. I’d love to hear any others (including ideas for...
@Jostin I’m not sure if it should be an open voting thing as the sliders should represent something measurable. Otherwise, I assume, people would just vote up their favorite memes and vote down the ones they had probably never heard of. (And sorry, @Blubber, I think the ‘Lame’ vs ‘Wicked’ thing would fall out of bounds here.) @Lindell I’d like for the entries to be able to stand on their own, but with even some of the best written entries on site, people still argue about their notability. @drnic010 Not...
So today we posted an episode about Balloon Boy. There is a bit of controversy as to whether it is “really a meme” or not and, honestly, I think that debate is way too simple. It’s shouldn’t be “Meme vs Not a Meme” but “Weak Meme vs Strong Meme.” ‘Balloon Boy’ is something I’d describe as being a Weak but Notable meme. All the stuff that happened around it (image macros, Anonymous ordering pizzas, etc) was worth thinking and talking about (notable) but ultimately, ‘Balloon Boy’ wasn’t going to be a...
(sorry for the second post) @RealGenius while I generally agree that the majority of astroturfed campaigns aren’t worthy, there are some that ended up becoming notable: Subservient ChickenSnakes On A Plane
@Tomberry I would say that ARGs aren’t a meme but some individual ARGs could qualify as notable. ‘I Love Bees’ in particular had a cultural notability beyond Halo.
This looks like a job for @Brad Kim if only b/c using Google Translate from Japanese to Korean sucks less than going from Japanese to English. Nice find!
Put together an entry and see if it sticks.
I’ve only been looking for about 5 minutes but here is the first posting of ‘Kitty Cat Dance’: http://www.g-shack.com/gshackmovies.htm It’s about halfway down the page, posted on March 4, 2004. There’s a ridiculously long comment thread that might be of interest. More: here’s an interview with the creator, Steve Ibsen on Ultra Kawaii
I nominate this video for BradKim’s next Terrible Tuesday.
@Chris Did that thumbnail just goatse us?
@Blubber It’s possible. I ran into some German tourists on the subway today who asked me to tell Jamie how awesome he was. It may have made me jealous.
