What's The 'Luigi Mangione 286 Theory?' The Pokémon Breloom, The Bible Proverbs And Other 286 Instances Explained
A conspiracy theory about Luigi Mangione, the suspected shooter of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and the number 286 has spawned online, related to the Pokémon Breloom being in his Twitter / X banner.
Purportedly, the number 286 has a lot of significance to the criminal case. The coincidences are evidence enough for some, meaning that Mangione was trying to send a secret message. However, not everything being said is true.
Confused about what's going on with the number 286 and Luigi Mangione? Let's debunk some things and explain.
Where Did The 'Luigi Mangione 286 Theory' Come From?
On December 9th, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione was detained by Altoona, Pennsylvania police at a McDonald's. He was the main "person of interest" in the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson which occurred five days earlier in New York City.
When the news broke online, people scoured the web for Mangiuone's digital footprint. Users quickly located his Twitter / X account @pepmangione, following it en masse.
In his profile banner, Mangione had a picture of the Pokémon Breloom. At first, it seemed banal, but one user named @_foxygrandpa__ saw something else. They wrote, "Breloom's Pokedex number is 286. Proverbs 28:6 reads, 'Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.'"
What's Included In The 'Luigi Mangione 286 Theory?'
Internet users, starving for some meaning in the rapidly evolving case, began searching for other things linked to the number 286. Perhaps, some of them would link to the details of the assassination case and its prime suspect.
One X user started a long thread on the topic, discovering that Mangione's X profile had 286 posts. Another piece of alleged evidence was that Mangione's cousin, Maryland lawmaker Nino Mangione, was following 286 people on X.
Others claimed that the PA McDonald's where Mangione was detained was 286 miles away from the scene of the crime in New York. On top of that, others discovered that a "denial code" in the US healthcare system is 286.
What Can Be Debunked?
Users have since stacked up a lot of other 286 coincidences in this case. However, many of them are not true.
For one, at the time of his detainment, Luigi Mangione had 292 posts on his X account. This is according to the earliest recorded screenshot of his page on December 9th, which was logged on archive.is.
Regardless, it is true that Mangione's account, as of December 11th, does have 286 posts, but this seems to be a result of his tweets being deleted or some of the accounts he retweeted archiving their own posts featured on the suspect's profile.
Additionally, it seems that the PA McDonald's where Mangione was detained is not 286 miles from the scene of the crime. According to one debunker on X, the straight line distance is about 232 miles while the driving distance is about 279.
