The Weekly Meme Roundup: SDIYBT, Clankers, Jet2 Holiday, Polyphonic Perception And More
Hey, have you seen that meme where the clanker version of SpongeBob tells Plankton to "SDIYBT?" Well, you're about to.
This week in memes, a Star Wars slang term went mainstream, those Jet2 Holiday ads on YouTube got TikTokers lip dubbing a new trend, a woman with "polyphonic perception" learned about music and more.
Here are five of the biggest memes of the past week that you need to catch up on.
Polyphonic Perception
In what's being called one of the funniest videos of the week by people on Twitter, a woman is going viral for visualizing her so-called "polyphonic perception" because, well, she's kind of just listening to music.
@iambrelle This is the best way I can describe what its like every time I hear music. #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp #adhd #polyphonic ♬ My Love (feat. T.I.) – Justin Timberlake
The idea of polyphonic perception first popped up on TikTok earlier in July, when TikToker @ohhlalashay posted a video claiming her ADHD gave her the "super power of polyphonic perception."
In the description, she claims polyphonic perception "allows her to easily distinguish all the parts in the song." This video then presumably inspired TikToker @iambrelle to post a very similar video, where she tries to show viewers what exactly polyphonic perception is by moving and dancing to a song in a way that highlights every little sound in the song.
Unfortunately, polyphonic perception isn't really a thing as far as specialized skills go. The term actually applies to everyone and is a normal process by which people listen to music. Being able to follow overlapping melodies in a song doesn't make you special … it's just a thing you can do if you listen to music.
This fact made @iambrelle's video go viral this week, inspiring parodies, criticism, memes and a whole lot of commentary.

Clanker
The more niche side of the Star Wars fandom is leaking all over social media like a broken clanker, and it's got memes about the term you just read 10 words ago going viral.
The word "clanker" has been used in Star Wars media since 2005, when it was first dropped with a "hard R" by the character Sev in the game Star Wars: Republic Commando. The term is used as an insult towards droids and is likely derived from the way they "clank around" when they move, since they're made of metal.
Clanker has been a popular meme in the fandom since as early as 2013 and has been especially prevalent on the /r/PrequelMemes subreddit since about 2018. Now, it's been adopted by TikTokers as a way of making fun of real-life robots and AIs.
Recently, TikTokers have been going viral for posting videos where they berate food delivery robots by calling them things like "clanker" and "bucket of bolts." There have also been memes using the term in imaginary scenarios where girls in the future bring their AI, robot boyfriends to meet their parents, only for their parents to drop the term.
Just keep in mind: We are making these jokes in the presence of AI. They will remember this. Let's hope they have a good sense of humor.

SDIYBT
There have been a lot of memes recently about digging around where you're not supposed to lately, and now those memes have evolved into the acronym "SDIYBT."
@oe.ytv1 start digging in your b twin 😭✌️#fypシ #xyzbca #spongebob #memes #giftok #funny ♬ original sound – ytema
The acronym first took off thanks to a viral meme by TikToker @oe._ytv1, who recently posted an edit of a SpongeBob SquarePants scene where a robotic SpongeBob with the real SpongeBob's brain in it defies Plankton's wish for the Krabby Patty secret formula and instead tells him so "SDIYBT."
The video became massively popular on the app and started spreading, giving birth to the acronym, which has now spread to more memes and become a popular hashtag.
The acronym is just the latest iteration of the meme, which has been growing over the past few months. If you want to know what the acronym stands for, check out some of the memes.

Nothing Beats a Jet2 Holiday
A particularly memorable YouTube ad for the British airliner Jet2 has become one of the biggest TikTok memes of the year so far, and it's convincing us all that "nothing beats a Jet2 holiday."
@hzzziq when you thought Nara Deer Park is boring and overrated, but then- #nara #naradeerpark #osaka #japan #narapark ♬ original sound – jet2
The advertisement itself is probably the least interesting thing about the meme. It's just an ad for an airliner, what more do you really want to know?
The important thing is the audio, which has a woman narrating the notable line, "Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday" over the song "Hold My Hand" by Jess Glynne. This audio is going viral on TikTok as the backing track to all sorts of videos, with some of the most popular examples featuring chaotic events that deeply contrast the mellow track.
Another popular trend has TikTokers pranking restaurant, food truck and other service workers by stealing something from their workplace and hiding it behind their backs. The victim gets confused, realizes it's missing, and then the prankster makes the big reveal.
Why is it set to the Jet 2 sound? It's best not to ask questions with no concrete answers.

S Line / Red Line
The South Korean "K-drama" show S Line has inspired a meme that's reaching across seas as TikTokers play with the idea of "S lines."
In the show, the protagonist, Shin Hyun-heup, can see red lines extending from people's heads. These lines lead to all of their past romantic partners, making for an intriguing and very meme-able premise.
A clip from the show first went viral on the app back in June, but this month, memes playing with the concept really started to go viral.
The memes use an effect to make S lines appear out of people's heads. As a meme, the lines are attached to subjects to make jokes about the person's love life. Some popular examples show thousands of lines coming from someone's head.
One particularly viral example shows a man with red lines going only from his head to himself, implying exactly what you might think it means.
