Funny how your perspective of an album switches a lot thought the entire listening of the album. At first, I was thinking I would be pretty bored because my dad loves Pink Floyd, and I don't share that love. Upon listening to the first track, I remembered the "Alice on the Wall" Sync that I watched a long time ago (Basically someone synched up Alice in Wonderland with the wall), and I remembered that the first few tracks were pretty good. As I continued thought the album, I felt like it got boring in the middle with the exception of a couple of the tracks. This boredom quickly ends with the last few tracks of the album, which make up for the slowness in the middle. I guess I agree with most of Syndic's comments about the individual tracks. It's a good album, but I'm leaving it at that. I guess it was pretty groundbreaking for its time. I'm not too sure how I feel about it. It was pretty good. The .5 rating higher than Green Day is just because out of the two, I would buy this album over the other.

Anyone who enjoys The Wall? I recommend watching the movie version. Seeing the Rock Opera story with great visuals is quite an experience.

Parkway Drive- Deep Blue

AND IT BEGINS. Before I start my review, I should mention I'm looking at the wikipedia pages while I listen , and it's pretty interesting to see the variety of instruments they played on the different songs, very rarely the same on every tune. Check it out.

In the Flesh – A great beginning, the shift the peaceful muzak to that thunder cloud boom of a guitar note makes for the one dramatic fuck ofa beginning, and the long notes and marching drum beats just make you wanna shake your head to the rhythm. DUN, DUUUN, DUUUUUN, DUN, DUNDUN. Fuck yes. And then comes those vocals. Waters voice is so fuckign weird on this album. Compared to, say, Shine on You Crazy Diamond, his voice is so jagged, nasal, harsh. But thats intentional isn't it? He's playing a character. And it works. That heartbeat sound effect is class. Crazy fuckign ending as well.

The Thin Ice – It's slow. It's peaceful. Works well as a mood breaker after the chaos. Eh, its ok. And heres our first apparence on vocals by David Gilmour, which is nice. He has the better voice between the two. And thats guitar break is cool. Let's move on.

Another Brick In The Wall 1 – I gotta be honest. I always preferred part 1 of Another Brick to part 2. The unusual guitar, the overwhelming feel of doom brought by the keyboards, the whispred vocals….so calm, and yet creepy. And then he FUCKING SCREAMS DADDY WHATCHA LEAVE BEHIND FOR ME and it's awesome.

Happiest Days of out Lives – Not really a proper song, more an intro for Another Brick. It works well, sets the tension up. It's all about that thumping bass drum and that whispered vocal. Good use of sound effects throughout this.This album is so well produced, I forgot it was this good. Nice helicopter.

Another Brick in the Wall 2 – And here we go. The Pink Floyd song. Everyone knows this. Overplayed? Almost certainly. But perhaps there is a reason for that. The lyrics just…reach a part of us deep inside. Anger at the school, pure frustration with life. And musically its great. That bassline is so good. People forget just how good Waters was with the bass. But he was important. Kids choir. Yay. And that solo is delivered to earth by the gods. IF YA DON'T EAT YA MEAT, HOW CAN YOU HAVE ANY PUDDING?!!?!

Mother – Meh. Nice to hear more Gilmour vocals though. You should really check out the wikipedia oages though. Each song has a page, with some interesting details about each song. Apparently this is about "the idea that we can be controlled by our parents' views on things like sex. The single mother of boys, particularly, can make sex harder than it needs to be." Also, for some unexplained reason, Jeff fucking Porcaro from Toto played drums on this. Why the fukc did they hire him?! He was like the best session drummer, and this drum track is not that good. Weird.

Goodbye Blue Sky – What makes this so good? I don't know. But it is. That guitar line is so simple, but effective. It's great that a song that is mainly acoustic strumming vocals and bass can be so good. Effective use of keyboard here, a looming fog over the rest of the music.

Empty Spaces – Boring. But those piano chords and bass at the beginning are terrible good arent they?

Young Lust – FUCK YEAH TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE FUNKY RYTHYM. Seriiously, we go from oooooooooom to SHAKE THAT RUMP instantly. This songs cool. Dat bass. Seriously funky,

One of My Turns – Not so much a song, as act break. Booooring. Oh wait, totally forgot it gets awesome at 2:00. It just doesn't work that well without Bob Geldof screaming FUCK like in the movie. (Seriously, go watch it.)

Don't Leave Me Now -JESUS CHRIST THAT SINGING. I know you're meant to be in character Roger and in pain, but holy shit, even on purpose, how can anyone force themselves to sing that bad?! Jesus make it stoooop.

Another Brick 3 – Not really a song again, but a bridge for the album. Still, I love this variation. The most rocking of all. Just raw. Cool.

Goodbye Cruel World – Yet another not really a song, but an act break, its effective though. As a continuous song, this album is quality. The way every other instrument just stops at once at the end….is powerful.

Time for a break before part 2. Jesus, how long is this post gonna be.

Okay, I'm not doing this track by track, because a lot of the songs seemed to be continuations of previous songs. However, I liked the overall album. I'm under the impression that I was supposed to pay attention to the lyrics, but I don't really do that. I think singing is just more music, and this albums really brings that out with good singing…most of the time. Sure some songs weren't really songs and I found them annoying (Goodbye Cruel World), but those that were, were good! I was never really a fan of Pink Floyd, but I rather enjoyed this album.

Final Score: 8/10 (Gee I must've been feeling nice to give American Idiot 7/10)

Hey You – One of my favourite songs from this album. That clasical guitar opening, that bass tone sliding around, what a great intro. Gilmours tender vocals provide a soarng intro, and when those drums kick in, the songs take a more serious, dramatic feel. When the drum go bam bam bam bamBAMBAMABAMABAM and then the solo begins? That is epic condensed into musical form. And then Roger Waters harsh delivery brings us back to reality, taking us away from the dream like guitar to the harsh real world….and its grand.

Is There Anybody Out There – Not much of a song, but lovely solo.

Nobody Home – What an unusual change in pace. But a welcome one. Love that piano track. Sweet, but with a tinge of sadness. and the heartbeat rythym returns of course. Fucking Gomer Pyle…

Vera – Yes, a tribute to Vera Lyn. Seemingly out of place at first, but when you know the story of the album, Pinks dads death in the war, and his disatisfaction with everything, this nostalgic longing for the past fits well. Still not really a song, being under 2:00…

Bring The Boys Back Home – Laaame. Not a proper song, really this and Vera should have been one track…but waitaminute. We seem to be building up to something….oh yes..

COMFORTABLY NUMB – Here we go. Almost certainly the best song on the album. I am having trouble thinking of anything to say. It's just too good, the lyrics are just wonderful. This nstrumentation and the long drawn notes and echos give a real sense of the drowsiness of the drugs…its great. I really love the mixture of Gilmours and Waters vocals, Roger providing the drowsy grimy vocals of the helpers in the verses, with Gilmours soaring dreamy voice providing THAT CHORUS. And then a solo begins. And it's epic. AND THEN THE SECOND SOLO STARTS AND I JIZZ MYSELF CAUSE ITS THE BEST SOLO FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU.

The Show Must Go On – This song has some masterful use uses of vocals and harmonies. Definitely the best of the "bridge" songs. That final "The show must go oooooooon" is powerful shit man.

In The Flesh. – Oh yes. I much prefer this to the original. Some people are turned off by the lyrics, but goddamn, this packs a punch. The minute he says "are there any queers in the theater tonight, get them up against the wall"…that packs a punch. Besides, the ending is much better. Impressive how the simple removal of a ? can make such a difference.

Run Like Hell – You'd better fucking run. What a great guitar line. Boggles my mind to think of how that's play. That chacka chacka guitar line sure does convey fevered running well, as do the "Run. Run. Run". wonderfully paranoid. How good.

Waiting for the Worms – A lot of harmonies on the second half aren't there? Not complaining, just saying. This is Ok. Nothign special

It's only 30 seconds long, but ya know what? For a very short segue-way, Stop has some of the most interesting music in the album. that piano line is just really beautiful, and Rogers voice is so frail…this is great. If only it was a proper song.

The Trial – Lol. Oh the trial. So theatrical. To be honest it's hard to imagine this without the animation…here, I'll put it here.

So right, the song. Roger Waters does a good job of playign the characters, they all have sufficently different voices. This could have gone so badly otherwise, but as it is, its good. The mix of monologuing acting in the verses and the softer sung chorus is good.

Outside of the Wall – After the chaos of the previous song, the peaceful camb nature of the final song is a breath of fresh air. But is it a happy ending? Not quite sure. The album has a cyclical nature; the first song begins where this ends.

So yeah, The Wall is a classic album, but definitely one that works best as an ALBUM, rather than as a collection of songs. Some of these are pure filler, designed to connect two others together, which is a mighty big shame, but the noticable ones are so good it just works.

The album overall was decent, considering I'm not a huge Pink Floyd fan. I enjoyed a lot of the instrumental rock parts, but the experimental, random noises just weirded me out, like the plane falling and the baby crying in 'In The Flesh?'. And I've just heard 'Another Brick in the Wall (Part Two)' so many times, it gets old after awhile. I did like it better than Dark Side of the Moon though.

The only reason Captian Badass' request is in the list is because he submitted reviews of albums that have already been selected. That's why his and not Derpy's or Omnomon's pick was selected.

Let's go for my review of Pink Floyd – The Wall, a little late and I apologize for it.
First, before entering into it, I have to add that I own the complete DVD of the wall because my mother is a great fan of that era, and I've watched it at least once or twice a while ago.

My opinion can then be very biased for some songs.

Disc 1:

In the Flesh? – I like the intro very much, but I have to admit, like many others, that it takes about half of the song before the vocals kick in. Without the video, it sounds strange to have it that way. With the video clip on, I understand a little better why but in the end, too short of a song, too long of an intro.

The Thin Ice – Very calm song. The vocals are as great as Pink Floyd used to be. the piano/bass intro isn't as good in my opinion however. The second part of the song is great but too short.

Another Brick in the Wall, part1 – Classic song, never gets old. I like it. JUST A BRICK IN DA WALL.

The Happiest Days of Our Lives – Works as a direct follow-up of the previous song. But here, the rythm changes a little and becomes… weirder. The lyrics aren't bad and reference to the school scene. Not really my favorite at all however.

Another Brick in the Wall, Part II – Theeeeere we go. The most well-known track of the album. Once again, I'd say it never gets old even for such an overused song. One of my favorites. Guitar riffs, use of the bass, vocals. HEY TEACHERS! LEAVE OUR KIDS ALONE!

Mother – I must admit the intro is kinda blank but the lyrics are great. After the middle, it becomes a little better. Not bad. Kind of meh. I like the "uuuuh baby" parts though.

Goodbye Blue Sky – Here, without the animation, it sounds very strange for a song. And then! "D-d-d-did you see the frighten ones?" and it becomes magical. Like this one. A little too short sadly.

Empty Spaces – Very different from the others songs so far. Again a long intro without vocals that takes half of the song. Once again, the part with the vocals is better than the intro itself so why that long intro? An why wasn't the rest a little longer?

Young Lust – Because it's meant to introduce that song. Not really the best in my opinion but not bad. Pleasant to listen to and I like it but nothing more.

One of My Turns – Long intro again, that's commonplace in that album. I must say I don't really like that one. The last part is more cheerful but it's very long to eventually come to that part. Too bad because we are drawn to skip it because of that and agains, it's too short anyway in my opinion.

Don't Leave Me Now – Weird song, long intro once again. We feel that it's some kind of point of no-return phase or something involving the sanity of the singer in the movie. The piano works great here but… I don't know, it's just strange. Not bad, but not my taste.

Another Brick in the Wall, Part III – Last part of that classic song. In my opinion, not the best one even if it's an addictive song. Not bad but too short. In all, if the 3 parts are put together, it can make a beautiful song.

Goodbye Cruel World – Last song of that disc. Very short. Works better again with the video but alone, it's meh, even as a conclusion.

I'm going to preface this with pointing out that I'm a total newfag. Saw the front page post, read the entire thread, listening to the albums along the way, and have now been compelled to sign up. I absolutely love this thread idea. Not only do I think it will help me appreciate the music I already like that much more, but it's a great way to expand into other genres as well. +1 Awesome to you for bringing it here Drpepperfan.

I know you've moved on from the first couple albums, but I'd like to post some very short reviews of them quickly.

UNKLE – My musical tastes occasionally foray into this genre, but this album didn't really do it for me. There were some tracks that were pretty decent, but overall nothing stuck out at me all that much. I didn't really like anything, but I didn't dislike anything either. I'll give it a 5/10.

American Idiot – I remember waiting for this album to be released. Apparently I'm a few years older than most of you, since it came out shortly after my 18th birthday. I knew about the album having a plot before I purchased it, and it lived up to the anticipation I'd built up for it. Like Doctor Horrible said, I'm dumbfounded by how many people didn't realize the album had a plot.

3 songs being horribly overplayed on the radio made me hate the entire album, but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it again. +1 Cool to DrH for suggesting it. 8/10.

The Wall – I love classic rock, (I could listen to bands like Zeppelin, Jimi, and Creedence all day every day) but for some reason I've never liked Pink Floyd all that much, always kind of thought they were a bit overrated.

They have their hits obviously, which I've heard and enjoyed as singles, but I've never really just sat down and listened to an entire album of theirs. Until now. I appreciate them so much more after listening to The Wall in its entirety. Mind = blown. 9/10

Disc2:

Hey You – New disc, new song. The rythms changes dramatically. Again a long intro, but it doesn't take half the song fortunately. Not bad. The thing is, I don't have the same feelings as others songs in disc1. Can be forgotten quickly.

Is There Anybody Out There? – Granted, this is not really a song more than a mix of lyrics and a guitar. Nonetheless, I must admit it takes me to the guts when I hear that "Is there anybody OUT THERE?" and then the guitar solo. I like it. One of my favorites.

Nobody Home – Some Piano. I don't know about that one. The singer's lament doesn't make it for me. Meh.

Vera – Short song. Ooooh, an orchestra? Not bad, simply not bad.

Bring the Boys Back Home – Oh, it falls on military-related themes? Meh. Of course, it's about bringing back boy soldiers to England. It sounds more like some kind of transition between two scenes in an audio book. Not bad as it is but still meh.

Comfortably Numb – Oh Yeah! We were building up to that song. That one is great, simply great. Another favorite of mine. Everything in it is genius.

The Show Must Go On – I can't help but thinking about Queen's version of "The show must go on" and it distracts me too much from appreciating that one. Not bad anyway, little short.

In the Flesh – Another version of the first song but a little longer? Okay. Sounds like a live version. Not bad at all.

Run Like Hell – Another live-like song. Not bad. The guitar is great in it.

Waiting for the Worms – Meh. Not a fan of that one. Overall it's a great song but I think it can be easily forgettable.

Stop – Really short with its 0:30. Okay. Moving on.

The Trial – Ha, the trial. Sounds like a Broadway musical. Great song. Works even better with the animation. Not my favorite but very close.

Outside the Wall – Last but not least, or is it? Very strange cheerful song. Big meh on this one.

Overall score: 8.5/10. This is a great album, no question asked. There are more great songs than lame ones. The only thing that is bugging me is how long some of the intros are and it sometimes kills the rest of the song, sadly. But other than that, Pink Floyd never disappoints.

Hunky Dory by that most glorious of figures, David Bowie.

I like the Album pretty much but most of the songs Sound kind of the same to me. With all those soft guitars and pianos. (I know you probavly think not but im not that musically educated to see any major differences). Bowies voice is very nice and catchy, i like it the most on the album.
Sadly i dont speak english that good that i understand everything he sings about, so i cant really say anything about the lyrics. My limited knowledge of the english language is also the cause of my pretty short review. I give the album a 6/10 so i probably wouldnt buy it. But thats also because im not really into this kind of music. It's good for falling asleep, though.

Ps. If the unlikely case happens that i could suggest an Album, could it be that it is one in german? (Not that i only or even mostly listen to german music, but i think that could be interesting)

Stick around til we're done with all these albums and sure, you can suggest an album thats german. Lyrics ain't that important compared to the actual music really.

Is it Kraftwerk?

Bowie's written some fantastic lyrics. Reminds me quite a lot of Bob Dylan in that aspect (though I like Dylan's singing more).The first half of this album is a little slower than what I usually like, but it does pick up the in the latter part.

Changes – Ooh, I've heard this one before. I'm not a huge fan of how the instrumentals get drowned out by his voice during the chorus, but other than that I like it.
Oh! You Pretty Things – Definitely enjoyed the piano in this one. Is the song about an alien invasion?
Eight Line Poem – I liked the intro the best. Probably a bit long for an eight line song.
Life on Mars? – My least favorite song on the album. It seems to be about some movie I've never seen, so I don't really get it.
Kooks – Love the bassline in this one. Love it. The rest of the song is catchy too. I actually liked this one much more the second time I listened to it. The first time it was kind of buried between songs I don't like all that much.
Quicksand – Tons of allusion in this one. I don't much care for his voice in this track. Instrumentals are pretty nice though.
Fill Your Heart – Very happy and upbeat. Big fan of all the instrumentals too.
Andy Warhol – Started off about as psychedelic as I'd have guessed given the subject matter, and I was a bit disappointed when it became more "normal". Still ended up being a very good song though, one of my favorites.
Song for Bob Dylan – Definitely my favorite. I must admit that I have a soft spot in my heart for Dylan since I grew up not very far from where he did, so I'm very likely a little biased.
Queen Bitch – I really liked the combination of electric and acoustic guitar, with some nice bass in the background.
The Bewlay Brothers – It was okay. Not as good as the last few songs but better than some of the tracks in the first half.
Bombers – Wasn't included in the link provided so I searched it out. I'm sure glad I did. 2nd favorite track on the album, and only just barely. Blame it on the Dylan bias. I thought the spoken "Bum-bum-bum" lines were fantastic.

Overall, I'd give it a 6.5/10.

Nice choice of an album. It made me appreciate David Bowie a little bit more. After listening to the album, I'd say this is the best album of the 4 so far. The piano always is a nice touch, and you can tell he put a lot into this album. I can't decide if this is his best work, but it's a great album. I'd say Andy Warhol and Oh! You Pretty Things were the best songs. There's a cover of Changes that I like better, but hey, he wrote the song.

Changes – Meh, I didn't really like Bowie's voice in this song. Good instruments though.
Oh You Pretty Things – This is the voice I wanted! Good song!

Life on Mars? – I had no idea what he was singing about, but I liked it anyways.
Kooks – Great song. I lol'd at parts.
Qucksand – Long but bearable. It was okay.

I listened to Hunky Dory earlier, but haven't gotten around to writing a full review. I will do so tomorrow, first thing in the morning, but since I get the feeling there will be an album change and I don't want to be kicked, consider this my review until then: IT WAS PRETTY GOOD.

Changes – I've heard this song before, but never have I heard it sung by David Bowie. I didn't like it compared to others I've heard, but its a pretty good song regardless.

Life on Mars? – Pretty good. I'm liking the piano+guitar combination.

Kooks – Fairly good song. Nice little melody, although its kinda repetitive and relies a bit too much on lyrics for my taste.

Quicksand – Nice song, I liked it. So far, I'm liking the usage of piano in all these songs, particularly this one.

Fill Your Heart – Another good song. I particularly liked the vocals, and that trumpet-horn-type-thing.

Andy Warhol – This one started off weird, but I liked that even. Possibly my favourite from the album, even though it didn't have a piano. I like the part where he says "Andy walking, Andy tired. Andy take a little snooze." That was funny.

Song for Bob Dylan – Very good song, IMO has the best usage of vocals on the album.

Queen Bitch – I didn't like this song much, but it wasn't bad. Just not my taste.

The Bewlay Brothers – Pretty good song. Not my favourite, but its good. Makes a very good album closer, even though this album was more of a collection of assorted songs than a… uh… whats it called… I don't know.

Overall – Nice album. Despite not being of my taste in music, it still impresses me.
