@Ric: What Cite said is likely the reason as for there being very few stallions. Same reason the G.I. Joe cartoons are mostly men, methinks.

I like a scientific approach best. Besides I love over analyzing all sorts of stuff at times. :D

Everyone seems to think everything needs a justification, while I'm come out and just point out that it has to do with show production.

I prefer the 5/17 male to female ratio that my friend and my theory of genetics produces.

Or that the spell that allows lesbian couples to have foal with each other can only produce females.

Maybe the show has mostly only shown areas where females dominate?
Remember Appleloosa?
It had a male dominance. Other cities like Fillydelphia or Trottingham could be the same way.
Or as I originally postulated, its just executive interference.

Dude, that's creepy…

I've been planning how to get Pokey to leave town by any means necessarily.

I'll elaborate after a dinner out with Colgate. later

Have you tried burning down his house?

True true…..but what of Cloudsdale?

It's Hasbro's decision. The show is still aimed at little girls so the amount of female characters is naturally going to be much higher. Whenever the episode steps out of ponyville, (ie, Canterlot Appleloosa) the male/female ratio is much more sensible.

Shows for young girls: Girls > Boys
Shows for young boys: Boys > Girls
Shows for teenagers: B&G ratio is more equal

Since MLP is originally a show for young girls and not teens, that's pretty much why there are so few stalions IMO.

Or what burning_phoenix said

From what I've seen, Cloudsdale is roughly 60% female to 40% male. This only from what few shoots are given of background ponies. In the snow and rainbow factories, males dominate. In the cloud factory, on the streets and the arena, females dominate.

@Dr. Gregory Horse The Prototype
Awwwww D:
Also:
Daymare Sol. (sounds kind of stupid).
But I don't know if having day light all day is a bad or a good thing though. Animals can adapt. But lack of sleep can be a problem though.

Well, everypony. I have to go to bed now. Jeeze! Am I ever going to finish my bucking song?? Beginning to doubt if it was a great idea.

It's quite worrying that you American folk are going to bed now, and I'm still wide awake despite a 5 hour timezone difference. I should probably cut back on the coffee.

On the topic of the gender ratio, I don't think it's worth analysing in much detail. This is a universe where the same pony can be found multiple times in the same crowd, and where physics-defying magic is just an everyday occurrence, so don't expect everything to make sense. Like most people have been saying, the best explanation is the simplest: It's a show for little girls, so the producers thought it appropriate to have a high female to male ratio. Anyway, it hurts my head trying to figure out any genetic explanations. Even worse was the time everyone tried to figure out a genetic explanation for the presence of the 3 pony races, assuming they can all interbreed and that they exist in a 1:1:1 ratio. High school Biology did not prepare me for that mindfuck.

Ideological the Vinyl Scratch wrote:

So…the song I'm working on is called Trixie's Curse. The story behind it is that in order to prove that she's great and powerful, Trixie tries to learn a powerful spell from a cursed arcane tomb. By doing so, she becomes cursed herself. Feel free to give any advice about what instruments I should utilize and so on. :)

Oh look, u got some fanart already! :)

I'm on the west coast and it's only 6:00pm even on the east coast it's 9:00pm

Ah, the life of not being enrolled at a university… I'm usually up until 2am Eastern (which is about 7am your time?) I've been up later, but that's due to assignments or a messed up sleep schedule that involves Rainbow Dash-frequent napping.

Well, unless you go the CitationNeeded/lazy route, we're not going to find a satisfactory answer. But like Ric said, it's fun to try to come up with somewhat accurate explanations for in-world phenomena. Most of the social psychology theories don't explain all of human behavior, but I still subscribe to them but because they're close.

Even worse was the time everyone tried to figure out a genetic explanation for the presence of the 3 pony races, assuming they can all interbreed and that they exist in a 1:1:1 ratio. High school Biology did not prepare me for that mindfuck.

Yeah. That was a fun discussion with Connor. I don't think I got my Punnet squares right with my X(X)Y and X(X)X theory. I can't remember my train of thought well-enough to be sure.

Also, electronica music in the Brony community.

I will explain it as an effect of being a subcommunity of the Internet community. I'm willing to bet most of the people you see on KYM-like forums like a lot of electronica, Brony or not. We're a very "plugged in" group of people. Also, sandwichman is probably right in that it's easier to make electronica with software…stuff that is (or can be) free and easy(ier) to learn.

To any tropers on this thread, I'm adding in a single trope, from left to right, for each character on this poster. I need one for the Hydra. Help, please? TVTropes doesn't have any on either the characters list, or the Feeling Pinkie Keen recap.

Wait…….

So if everypony would go gay for Spitfire,
what would ponies do for you then?
Go double-gay?

Gays would become straight I guess?

I will be going to bed now all night everypony. So far 6 people following me on tumblr.

I'm starting to get paranoid now.
I will be going to lay down to bed backwards.

Only pic I could find. There is no Bridget pony pics out there. Interesting?

burning_phoneix wrote:

I dunno. Perhaps it more like addition than multiplication. No pony has ever gone double-gay or double-straight before.
EDIT: Platus is probably facepalming or smh'ing right now.

Uh, guys, I need more help naming the ponies in that poster. What are we calling the Appleloosa bartender with the mustache who threw the drunk on salt guy out early in the episode? He's to Pony Joe's right in the poster.

He was Wyatt Earp

Speaking of that…..Where is Platus?

I haven't seen that dude for ages!

I'm thinkin he's lurking moar or lurking up the image section.

So I'll progressively post a little about myself, to help all you understand why I'm like who I am and do what I do.
First the basics:
Dad: sad drunk, left my sister and I alone most of the time
Mom: died giving birth to Cheerilee and myself
Sister: Cheerilee, my twin
Daughter: Ruby Pinch (I'm not good at filling out birth certificates dunk) my one and only daughter
Fillyfriend: Colgate, just got back from teaching new dentist ponies
Ruby's dad: Pokey Pierce (I think I've decided on snapping off his horn and shoving it up his ass :3)

More to come soon

You need to know that I sometimes lie when I'm drunk, I'm not drunk now though.

Feel free to ask questions!

IT IS DONE
I finally listed AND applied a single trope to everypony on the Comic-Con poster on TVTropes FiM character's page.
Here it is.
Tell me what you think! You can access the tropes I applied by clicking the asterisk next to "now". Hover your mouse over the blue hyperlinks to see the trope without clicking it.

Looks like I got here just in time!

I have been avoiding the forum because it moves so quickly, I can never get involved in the conversation. I will try to pop in from time to time though. Sorry.

Also, I put something together that you might find interesting. It is a set of stages that every newly discovered background pony goes through in the fandom:

Stage 1: Discovery, marking the character out as unusual or interesting.
Stage 2: Naming, usually follows shortly after stage one.
Stage 3: Fan art, often accompanied by anthropomorphic art.
Stage 4: Complex fan works, including animations, Tumblrs, fanfiction, and anything that requires a great deal of time and/or commitment.
Stage 5: Relationshipping, can include romantic pairings, friendship, enmity, or any combination, the main point being that the character’s interaction with the official cast.
Stage 6: Fandom consensus, which occurs when the fandom comes to a general agreement on the character’s traits, personality, and behaviours. Other characterizations and/or names will either be forgotten, merged together, or explained away.
Stage 7: Official recognition, when the creators and/or Hasbro recognize the character’s existence, this step may or may not involve an “official” appearance in the show.
Stage 8: External recognition, occurring when the character is alluded to outside of either the show or the fandom – hitting "mainstream" popularity.

Examples: Octavia, Scratch, Lyra, and Bon-Bon are all hovering between 5 and 6 (Lyra got thrown out of 6 during the "Heartstrings" debacle, but is working her way back now). Derpy is the best example of an 8 that I can think of (Even Penny-Arcade has alluded to her), while Dinky is about a 4 as far as I can tell. The new pony Allie has also recently hit 4, as someone has made a Tumblr for her.

There may be some overlap between some of the steps, and a character may not follow all of the steps in that order, and likely will not complete the whole list, but I think that this fits in with the general trajectory that a recognized background character will follow.

Time for a little more.

As I said, my mother died giving birth to my sister and I. My dad, understandable, could not function normally after this. He took to drinking, beer was his favorite. He still had a job, paid the rent, got us food, kept us from dying (barely sometimes). My sister and I only sometimes went to public school. Mostly as younger fillies we just sat around the house and talked and played. We taught ourselves a lot under the circumstances, enough for us to survive with other ponies and for us to get decent jobs. Once we got our cutie marks (at a similar time) ((I'll have to tell you guys that story too!)) We went and lived on our own. It was just too hectic at home.

We lived together for a good few years, Cheeri teaching and myself bartending (who would have guessed!?!). About that time we started to demonstrate the more interesting parts of our personalities. Cheeri was a fillyfooler and I was just a drunk bisexual nympho.

More probably tomorrow, Colgy's calling me to bed now. Love you all! ASK QUESTIONS!

@Owens
I didn't drink it! I don't particularly like rum, I prefer red wine and vodka (not at the same time).

Alright, the Art Fads page is pretty much done so far. I'm pretty happy with the result.

If you want to make a suggestion or a request or something, feel free to click on the "Suggestion" button on the article or post it in this forum as a quote to this post. Tomorrow I'll read whatever came up and start adding editors. But for now I need some sleep.

I'd love to hear some opinions as well, you can choose whether you post them here or in the comments of the page, whatever suits you best.

P.S. As for Ponies in Sweaters, feel free to upload fanart featuring it. If enough gets added, I might add a small part about it, as fanart shows spread as well. Also keep other fanart coming as well.

@Platus
You don't need to follow the conversation, if you read the last few pages you pretty much caught up. Subjects change quickly, so there's no real need to scroll through everything if you missed a day of posts.

Thank you Random. I will do that from now on. It's just a little disheartening when I get home after 10 hours to see how many pages I missed.

Also, I just added 25 sweater images to the new meme page. It took me very little time to find them, and I left a lot behind. I think we should add a section.
