I laughed. Hard.

@Twins:

It's the job of the fandom and the bronies to develop characters themselves. It's why Lyra, Bon-Bon, Octavia, Vinyl Scratch, Derpy, Doctor Whooves, etc. have become so loved. They have absolutely no personality as the show has portrayed, but the fans have given them quirks, personalities, etc.

So, you can't really say that M/M shipping doesn't work because of lack of development, unless you're going by only what is canon, or what can be proven by the show. In which case, the only ship that would work is CadenceXShining Armor, and maybe Rarity and Spike. Other than that, there truly aren't any canon pairings, or ones that would be supported by the show.

Fan-fics, fan-art, etc. develops characters and gives them further definition so we can ship them. Any ship would be a perversion of their personalities, technically, since none of the characters besides Shining Armor and Cadence have shown truly romantic intent, much less acted on it. Big Mac and Blueblood have more personality confirmed than 75% (or so) of the characters used in shipping, so it's more 'canon' to use them with shipping than any background pony, including Derpy, Bon-Bon, and Lyra.

I get what you're saying, but it doesn't really add up too well from a logical standpoint if you consider that the fandom has given every character deep personality, or added onto what already existed.

No, I agree with what you're saying. Perhaps I wasn't being clear. What I was saying was more inline with the mane cast, who already are developed. For those background characters, the community can, and should, flesh out a consistent and likable personality. For example, Derpy is almost entirely fan created, and the community has done a great job at giving her quirks and a personality that makes her Derpy. And once that personality is created and accepted by the community, then that's that.

That's not to say you have to stay completely within those boundaries though. Personalities should never be one-dimensional. Build upon and expand on what's established.

Any pairing works, really, as long as the writer can find a way to make it work while staying in character (which is harder or impossible to do in some cases). You can't have a pony act completely out of character just for your silly little clopfic.

I'm really just going off of what I know about ponies, which is mostly from the show. I don't read fanfics, or spend much of my time on ponies outside of this thread and perhaps the occasional Equestria Daily visit, and checking out some artwork.

I'm afraid I didn't really have much to contribute to the discussion with little actual shipping experience, I just felt like I needed to write a lot, seeing as how I've been gone for a while. It's kind of funny actually, the ending of that post was completely off-topic. Beautifully written, maybe, but largely irrelevant to the rest of the post.

TL;DR of that last post: Shipping of any kind, heterosexual or homosexual, is fine with me, as long as the writers can create a convincing relationship between the two characters that uses their established personalities, whether fanon or canon, and expands them to portray their emotions.

@Twins:

Yeah, that's what I thought you might have meant, but I wanted to point out that M/M shippings can work just as effectively as F/F shippings in the personality department. Many authors in the fandom are VERY good at building personality, or adding onto what exists.

So, while the show only gives us minimal personality to work with in everybody besides the Princess, the Mane Six, Spike, and very few others, ships are still able to be made. The main reason the discussion came about was that comic with people accepting AppleDash but turning into the KKK against CaraMac. It was showing a double-standard that I haven't really seen in the fandom, really.

As a way to get more perspective (or a joke) we thought it would be better to have a female's opinion in the matter.

And that's how Equestria was made.

@Bob

I didn’t leave, I’ve been lurking. The drama I caused was my way of having fun with you people.
I’ve been watching for quite a while.

That was a prank? Damn, I honestly thought it was serious. You rustled everyone's jimmies.

Perhaps I should have known. I always knew you to be calm and rational but on that one moment; you went completely out of character.

Nope.

It's art style was actually made by Alex Ahad, the mind behind "Scott Pilgrim."

Its style is an interesting synthesis of 1930's American cartoons and anime.

John Joseco and Slugbox (both famous pony artists) are fans of the game. You can actually some their fan art on the Skullgirls community site.

And here's some random pics to show off its style.

Dude,

Its a downloadable title and only costs $15.

I spend more on apple soda, cereal and paper towels than that.

Does anyone know when Fighting is Magic coming out? I know that it has been in development but I do not know if it has been released yet.

Edit: Never mind from the information that I found it is still in alpha, but it still looks pretty good for an indie game.

I have no clue why I enjoy this guys style of art so much, but I do. New topic for everyone. Who is your favorite artist in this fandom, why, and what's your favorite piece by him/her?
My favorite pieces by this guy would have to be these two.

[edit]: If anyone wants to go look up anymore of his pieces, his deviantart is FoxInShadow.

@Zarathh

That's easy. My favourite pony artist is definitely this guy going by the name LavosVsBahamut. He's seriously amazing, and I have no idea how he manages to draw that well.

Okay, but to be serious, technically I have two favourite artists, but I have no actual favourite piece from either of them.

While I don't approve of some of the stuff CrookedTrees puts up, I still enjoy the visual style of the Ask Pinkamena Diane Pie Blog. Enough for it to actually inspire my own drawing techniques back when I was still starting out with drawing ponies.

But another artist that I really want to mention is a guy going by the name of Discommunicator. He has a very simple but effective style, his drawings are very inspirational in my opinion, and he's overall my favourite pony artist at the moment.

You probably haven't even heard of him. (puts on hipster glasses)

I have multiple of favorite pony artists, including Muumi
Because honestly, you draw some good art work and I like it!

And the guy who draws these pictures

His art style is great same with his humanizations.

sibsy. Someone needs to hire her for the show. Best OC, by far.

And actually, I consider this fanart. I don't think a lot of the art was used in the show. I think it was just for fun.

@Ric

That would be semehammer, and he's a she. I met her at a con a few weeks ago and bought some prints from her including the Pinkie version of the Human Ponyshrug:

<img src="http://img.ponibooru.org/images/0c73a2a9e61a6c40a0fb5ccb68d63b51/52345%20-%20artist%3Asemehammer%20hat%20humanized%20i_ain%27t_even_mad%20pinkiepie%20shrug%20shrugpony.jpg" height="350" / >

Her art is generic in a way, but it's still amazing. One of my favorite artists.

I also love tlm02's humanizations. He gets the expressions down pat.

Picking from actual pony art, then I'd have to say darth franny is one of my favorites along with Joey Darkmeat. But I have so many other favorites for humanizations and straight-up pony art that I simply can't embed. Three image suggested minimum and all.

@Verbs

She already works for the show. She just doesn't do the animation.
You were being sarcastic.

I actually like her OC. It's adorable. It doesn't have all those stupid contrasting colors or strange hues that 90% of OCs do.

Btw, tomorrow is her B-day.

@Pony artists

The only ones I actually know are JJ and White Diamonds (and Sibsy, but she's technically not an artist), and I'd pick White Diamonds out of them. I don't actually know what kind of stuff JJ makes other than what I've seen on here, so I stay away just to be safe.

I can't really choose a favorite from his/her (I'd like to assume he/she is a female) gallery, so I'll post this one:

One thing that's annoying about him/her though is that if I try to find her deviantart on google, I get a "White Diamond" on deviantart and a bunch of jewelry sites.

@Dan

The idea of your OC (or at least, I think) is to be some creepy, demon-alien thing. The problem I have with most OC's is that they usually have something like red manes, black hair, etc.

I'm just going to assume your humor is too subtle for my feeble mind.

@Muffinator

I tried to keep the colors on my OC from clashing or being brilliantly offensive to the eye, but Wild Fire easily looks more like a pony that would appear in the show (and surprise surprise, she did).

Edit: Spot on. There's been more than a few troll fics about that fact. (PS: Bloodbath McBullet the alicorn is best pony.) I know that's not an alicorn, I just got it from the comments section of that fic.

JJ or "John Joesco" is a artist that is well know for his "Princess Molestia" Tumblr. I Tumblr has Borderline R34 on it and Molestia is seen constantly hitting on almost everypony she see's. Other than that there is this "gamer Luna" We see a lot on the Tumblr as well. But johns "Princess Molestia" Tumblr is his most tame one by far.

He posts Humanized R34 on his Daring Do Tumblr and his "Tomorrow love" Tumblr.

@Dan and Muffins

If I had any question as to whether she worked on the show or not, then I wouldn't have considered it not being fanart. And no one's OC has ever been used in the show up to the season 2 finale. Yes, I am aware that she's the storyboard artist for FiM, but it can't hurt to check. I didn't make it clear that I knew.

You know. For the sake of humor.

EDIT If it's not apparent, then know that I'm distracted.

Speaking of pony artists, does anyone know the artist behind these:

I can't read the signature. I think they're fairly good, other than the odd sort of wrinkly look.

@Muffin
I thought brown and green looks good together…because I saw orks normally have brown hair and green skin, so I thought it would be a good color scheme.

But I really wanted my OC to have a ork like twist to him, but with the pony body structure, and armor/technology that looks…well…less ugly compared to the ork technology, I love the orks really, but their technology look ghetto as all get out. But my armor's color scheme matches that of some ork armor.

@Ric and Dan

Your OC's are fine. I was talking about OC's like this (let's hope he doesn't see this post). I see combos like that everywhere.

And yes, Green and brown go well together. Don't worry about it.

Though, to be honest, I once had an OC unicorn who was a card magician who was white with a red and black mane (keeping with the card theme) so I'm not completely innocent of this either. It's funny how so many bronies drift to that color combo.

There are a lot of terrible OCs that seem to come out of that famous pony creator. Usually alicorns with the black and red scheme.

Although, most of the ponies I come up with are brown, brown, and more brown. I seem to be the only person that likes natural, earthy tones.

I also seem to be the only motherfucker that thinks earth ponies are the best race. Fucking pegasi and unicorns. What makes them so special?

continues rambling about shit-colored earth ponies

Edit: To give you an idea, my first OC for a story was a monochrome grey earth pony with a brown mane. Then there was a brown and brown earth pony, a blue and indigo pegasus (who had wings that didn't work), and a neon pink and white alicorn.

Guess which one of those is Chesty Motherfucking McThunderbeard.

I pulled up your OC in Photoshop Elements just to play around with it. Your profile says that opspe was the one who colored it, and he definitely did a good job. In my opinion, it looks great, the only suggestion I would have is to mute the neon-ness of the green a tad, I think it's slightly bright.

Just to compare, we have:
Before                                                                    After

Then again, maybe it's just my monitor. (Hopefully you'll excuse my spurt of audacity.)

How is it everyone suddenly likes earth ponies so much, and everyone also wonders why they're the only one?

Me, I'm happy with my bat pony thestral thing. Bat ponies are cool.

@Verbose
I hadn't realized that Lolover had given up art for medicine. A pity for us, but I hope it works out for him/her.

Last edited May 23, 2012 at 07:49PM EDT

I've never actually used the pony creator, because that would require facebook. But I would probably end up creating an earth pony as well. Mainly because, yes, pegasi and unicorns are everywhere.

Example of an acceptable (by acceptable, I mean adorable) OC:

Generally, the best OC's are the one's with the simple earth tones. There might be an occasional OC that manages to pull off neon-colors fairly well, but for the most part, they don't.

In other news:

If somebody else actually recognizes this, they will win all my internets.
