KYM Pony General V: We Just Don't Know What Went Wrong

I actually like the new voice better. The old voice sounded really masculine for some reason. Plus, this one is closer to the alleged "muffins."

But why change it? I like the new voice, but I feel like they should have left the old one there to maintain the integrity of show. What was offensive about that really? If Derpy was really mentally deficient or whatever, I would take it as a compliment to such people. Despite her differences from everyone else, she is able to become very popular and inspiring to thousands of 20 year old guys.

If Derpy was offensive, I don't know what is anymore.

Wonder why Hasbro had to bring this up again. Way to destroy your fanbase.

I'm going with BSoD here. I can't be bothered to go and find the post now, but I said that if Hasbro had the choice of taking flak or disappointing the fanbase, then they would cut off all ties to the fanbase effective immediately.

And I don't think the voice is that bad. The voice acting seems generic, like I've seen either here or on EqD, but it's not bad. I think it's better than some lines that really did sound like it was…off (and don't say it didn't.)

Ed, Edd, and Eddy and SpongeBob to a lesser extent were different than what is MLP. It is FiM, so it's different from other generations, but it is My Little Pony. I'm a little disappointed. Derpy was our baby. And I can't help but think that if Tabitha St. Germain knew Derpy was a mare, then this might have been avoided. It wasn't just the name. The voice played a bit into as well.

But the main thing is to _not freak out about it._ We don't want to do anything that makes us out to be overzealous bronies that can't see logi…

Oh…

Okay you drama queens, let me repeat what I said before. I'll bold the important parts

Yep, I knew they would do that. Best compromise they could have made to appease both sides of the coin. Voice sounds okay to me though.

However I just know some people are going to bawl their eyes out over this. Reel it in people. Just be glad Derpy is back.

Though I am incredibly upset about the new voice (I liked the old one), I agree that the best thing to do would be to just drop it. Things were already bad enough for Hasbro after some idiots people were offended, and creating a large issue over this will only make things worse for us. We don't want to be too much trouble for Hasbro, lest they decide to remove Derpy altogether.

Of course, only about 13 people max are going to read this (probably more like 2), so there will be a massive sh**storm anyways.

Quite frankly, I'm scared as to what this is going to lead to. Many people in Hasbro and the animation studio were already on the edge with all this Derpy nonsense. Things are about to get much, much worse.

Yup, people are already calling for a boycott against Hasbro. This isn't going to end well.

Where were you last page? Wait, never mind, don't read it. Please don't.

They made Derpy not canon anymore. Of course people will rage. I will have to agree that although this voice isn't good, it's more fitting than the one before.

But why in the name of Celestia did they do this without telling anymore? It's almost like they want to bring down the brony fanbase so they can end the show at 65 episodes.

Don't think the eyes were "fixed" though. You're thinking too hard. They wouldn't do that.

Last edited Feb 25, 2012 at 12:08AM EST

It’s official.
I hate everything.

I thought you already did.

Anyway…

I liked the old voice, but the new one works. People shouldn't find a reason to complain about it anyway.

You guys should know why they had to change it, c'mon! It was the biggest shitstorm in Pony General 4!

For those who missed it, it is simple: Someone found Derpy offensive, they complained and Hasbro did exactly what they had to do when they get customer complaints about something: immediate removal. Bronies raged. Storms shat and really…lets not talk about it. Darkest moment in Brony history.

I predicted exactly what they have just done. It's exactly what they had to do in order to get that episode back online and frankly I think everyone should just get over it.

I already spend my time whining and groping about the Derpy controversy and I'm done with it. I'm dealing with it and so should you.

[edit]

But why in the name of Discord did they do this without telling anymore?

The episode had been taken down from iTunes for some time and news about the controversy had already spread far and wide so perhaps they already figured it was old news and did not need to make an announcement about it.

Someone please explain the 65-episode thing?

What is going on. I see people are saying that Season 3 will only be half a season.

What does that mean. Why cut a season in half?

@Cmiuc

We don't know the full details about the whole 65 episode thing yet. Everything is rumors at this point.

It's based on some trope that all television series stop at 65 episodes or something like that. The rumor was supported by the fact that only 2.5 seasons were originally ordered by Hasbro but still nothing is concrete. You have to wait and see if the series really does get that far.

There's plenty of former discussion on that topic if you are willing to wade through older pages

The eyes ain't underped.

Wait, Hasbro subtly made them less derped! THOSE FIENDS!

I glanced over the ED comments for about 1 second, and then I came running back to here.

Oh Celestia, did I bring up the 65 episode thing? All you need to know is that some stupid people think that Hasbro is going to end the show at 65 episodes because so far they only ordered half of season 3, correlating to 65 episodes. And the 65 episode cartoon is so prevalent it has its own bloody trope page

It's a common tactic in show ordering actually, the TV execs order half a season because episodes are apparently really expensive, and if the show flops they don't lose as much.
Right, FiM is definitely going to flop soon. Hasbro is just going to suddenly abandon this massive fanbase, just so they can syndicate and lose all hopes of making tons of $$ off bronies. That makes total sense.

/enddiscussion please

While many people in Ponibooru are either raging or disappointed right now, a few of them are trying to restore order. Luckily, it seems that most of them calmed down but are still disappointed by what Hasbro did.

I won't forgive what Hasbro did by changing Derpy's voice….

You're forgetting though that over 23,000 bronies signed a petition when this whole mess started, and that's probably a small percentage of those that actually took action against Hasbro. If these same bronies were to call for a boycott (which things look to be heading, apparently), then ultimately yes, it would make sense to abandon us because it makes the community as a whole look unprofitable.

The worst possible thing the brony community could do to itself is make it look like Hasbro has to choose between its intended and unintended audience, because ultimately, they will choose the intended one.

And don't think I'm striking out at you or anything, it's just that this could wind up being a serious matter.

Last edited Feb 25, 2012 at 12:47AM EST
If these same bronies were to call for a boycott

I sincerely hope they don't.

Boycotting Hasbro over a minor edit they made to a minor character in one of their children TV shows in order mitigate the risk of offending potential viewers is…

…oh Celesitia…the stupidity…I can't bring myself to write it in words

Last edited Feb 25, 2012 at 12:49AM EST

I don't think many bronies actually buy a lot of the merchandise so how would they boycott it?

But I really don't think the show is gonna end at 65 episodes, as someone mentioned before: Hasbro has a channel now, the Hub. And if they're gonna compete with other channels they're gonna need fresh content. I think My Little Pony is one of the most popular shows on the channel (I don't have the numbers on hand though) so cutting it to 65 episodes would seem like a very stupid move to me.

It just seems like a silly compromise to me, didn't they want to remove the references to alleged mental retardation? She also still acts completely Derpy…

I think it's best if they did. It's just not the same anymore. They don't even call her Derpy :(

Derpy's voice was changed? Alright I guess it could be wo- THEY UNDERPED HER EYES AND REMOVED HER NAME!?
… If you'll excuse me I'm going to overreact now

Joking aside the new voice isn't too bad, although the underping and unnaming have me a bit bummed. We can just sorta hope that eventually it'll get better (i.e. Tabitha does a revoice or something or they do a slightly less shitstorm inducing refrence in a later episode) or the dvd and tv versions keep Derpy unaltered. Still, people are losing their shit a bit too much, and this is coming from one of the biggest Derpy fans out there.

Weak, dude. Seriously.

Well this is just great, not two days ago I was criticizing people's over-the-top reactions to stuff on the internet, and now I guess I'm guilty of it too. Needless to say…

Gentlemen! Start your internet petitions! If we don't get at least a statement from Hasbro, they'll feel the wrath a hundred thousand spurned fanboys!

Though, consider the idea that perhaps this is an iTunes exclusive issue, We Love Fine and other official licensed sites haven't felt the cold sting of political correctness, and surely the episode has aired multiple times on the channel, right?

Welp, depression is kicking in again. I really need to buy medicine for this kind of stuff. I think I'm not the only one, too. But is it Hasbro or Studio B's fault? In my opinion, no, they just don't want to get in trouble. Really, it's the "soccer mom"-like broneis who can't handle topics like Derpy. Just a vocal minority (over 20,000 could be a minority) who just feel like topics like these are considered offensive. Really, I feel sorry for Hasbro and Studio B for putting up with this.

I need something fun to look at…

Fine, fine. Let me try that again….

You're dumb and your wiener is the size of a tic tac, your brain is the size of a walnut, girls have to shave their face more often than you, you stink like the poo poo of a thousand babies, hobos spare change for you because they pity you, and your momma is so fat that when she needs to pass by the TV while you are watching MLP, you end up on pound puppies by the time she's done passing! LOL Is that better?

Im just kidding. Don't get mad please. Lest you go all Roberto Duran aka. "manos de piedra" on me.
EDIT: you know, It could have been iTunes that asked them to censor derpy on their version to avoid trouble themselves. who knows…

People, I don't think we should overreact. Yes, the changes to the episode are unfortunate and yes, I am very disappointed. In truth, I could do with the voice change. The new eyes stung a little bit. What really got to me was the lack of recognition, they didn't call her by her name. Still, even though I'm upset, I'm not going to blame anyone. I'm sure everyone over at Studio B are just as upset as we are. They like us, they like making us feel welcome. But still, for whatever reason, they had to do this. I'm sure they're hoping that we can be the bigger side and not make an issue out of this. That's what made the change in the first place, and I'm sure they didn't want to upset us. I think what we need to do is accept that this has changed. We need to accept this and take it in strides. I still have Studio B's back and I'm hoping you all do too.

Boycotts barely ever work even when it would make a significant difference. Can we please protest in a way that's less overused and devalued? I honestly think a good old fashioned picket-party in front of Hasbro HQ would bring things more closer to home, but that's pretty extreme. >.>

In the mean time, let's just annoy the hell out of 'em til they respond, like before the only thing we need is an explanation.

I figured this might happen, but I thought the most they would do was change her voice, being what I thought was the bigger offender to the people who complained about it and keep her name to leave the shout out intact. But no. And then I find out that they edited her eyes here and there. Yes this is very minor to the scene, however it's something that people weren't even complaining about. How was that even necessary and what does it mean for the future Derpy appearances that people always enjoy?

While I'm somewhat disappoint in Hasbro right now, I don't think they had much of a choice what with having to keep good public relations and shit. I get that much. But what I'm saying is I think doing nearly everything they possibly could have without removing the scene entirely or screwing up the storyline by making her not derp around and wreck everything was overkill.

Yes I'm taking this a little too seriously. You bet your ass my jimmies are rustled and everything. But still.

Someone mentioned it was probably because of Apple rather than Hasbro? So we should be blaming them instead? I don't know.
But hey, is the original version of the episode still on YouTube, or elsewhere? Because if so, at least we still have that. I have a 1080p .mp4 of it on my hard drive here, Apple can't do shit about that.

Still, if this is because of one fucking concerned parent, that's our political-correctness-oriented society digging itself deeper. Overprotective helicoptering sanctimonial "concerned" parents offend me far more than this could have possibly offended one of them.

You know come to think of it, until further notice the whole "It's just iTunes, Hasbro's not deliberately dissing us" theory seems to fit really well.

- The iTunes version of the episode was taken down and modified specifically.
- No other version was touched, including the DVD which should be a hell-of-a-lot easier to modify.
- All other references to the scene and character remain intact on the interwebs.
- None of the later episodes released have been un-derped.

So you know what…

They took the thing down, what did ya think they where doing to it? It's cheaper in the long run to have DHX modify it and make the iTunes guys happy then to not be able to sell it from one of their biggest money pots.

Until we get some real word from someone there's no more reason to panic now then when the episode was taken down in the first place. It's just interesting to think there's some bastardized faux-Derpy running around somewhere. (I hear the new voice is pretty good though, can't disagree there)

In other news, do you know what is officially the most amazing thing ever? Orchestral Dubstep, you heard me, Orchestral Dubstep!

@Bob

I think what we need to do is accept that this has changed. We need to accept this and take it in strides. I still have Studio B’s back and I’m hoping you all do too.

Thank you Bob, our resident voice of reason.

Wild overreactions started this whole mess. But wild overreactions will not fix it. As I have said before in PG4, Hasbro and Studio B are not responsible for the mess and blame should not be applied to them.

People who blame Hasbro don't seem to realize that Hasbro did NOT make their decision out of thin air. They reacted to people who actually did complain about Derpy

If you want someone to blame, blame those few individuals (estimated to only number in a hundred) who filed letters of complaint to Hasbro about Derpy. If those people had never said anything then Hasbro would not have changed a thing. Hasbro and Studio B did only what they had to do in the face of public complaints. They cannot just ignore them

Going to Hasbro about the problem will never solve anything, in fact it will only make matter worse.

If anyone here wants to see a resolution to this whole mess then this is what you need to do:

-Spead the word far and wide that "Derp" is not an anti-disabled slur

Tell the world that, get it into people's heads that there is nothing to be offended about it. Then, and only then, can Studio B bring back Derpy. Only when nobody takes offense to "Derp" can Derp be used in a cartoon. That is final.

Flamewar (mostly) disabled!

See? Just keep calm, don't jump the gun, and think logically. I have the hub so next time it reruns I'll report back on wether or not the voice is changed there as well. And if it is then we descend into total anarchy! /joking

Yeh I know he didn't make it, but he had it made. It's on his bloody album, I'm listening to it right now.

@Dr. Gregory Thanks! :D I didn't post it here myself because I felt like it would seem like self-promotion if I posted about it both on the comment board AND the general thread.

@Ideological Oh no, don't leave!

If I knew who it was I'd probably be berating them directly. Problem is, I can't find anyone in this thread named Cite, or with Cite anywhere in their name. To top that off, since I also can't find the original post that made Ideo upset, my impression of this situation is from a perspective entirely biased towards Ideo. While that's probably the side I would take anyway, due to misunderstandings in the past I don't want to pump out any blind rage at anyone.
Still, it's ridiculous that a quarrel strong enough to drive someone away from the discussion would take place within this particular fandom, given our emphasis on love and tolerance.

@Gigatoast exactly, that's the spirit!
We've nothing to worry about. Also, if the fandom really wants to display how rustled their jimmies are over this, I honestly wouldn't be upset if the iTunes version of the episode got a boycott.

@Vazquez honestly, Tara Strong is kinda hot. In that picture (referring to the first one, lol), at least.

One last thing… can someone show me the Textile code you guys use for those partial quotes, where you have the quoted text indented and that weird little vertical gray line next to it? It probably would've made this post quite a bit easier to keep track of for anyone reading it given that I'm responding to posts on 3 different pages…

@Captain Troper
Honestly, if people didn't let their emotions get the better of them and waited until they had the full story the internet (and the rest of the world) would be a much better place. Those insufferable "anti-Mass Effect 3" pricks are really rustling my jimmies too.

Also, it's < blockquote > [text] </ blockquote >

Just without the spaces.

Sure thing cap!
It's:
Manually write "x wrote:" followed by
blockquote text here /blockquote (with < > surrounding the blockquotes)
Followed by a one line space, an entire line made up of three dashes (---) and then the rest of the post (if you don't use the dashed the text following them will be all tiny) and it should come out like this

Okay, I listened to and that's some excellent orchestra. It gets really good towards the end.

Also I don't blindly hate Skrillex (that's the impression I get from you) but even if I did it would not matter because it says it was made by Varien for Skrillex, not by Skrillex.
