I found out late, and only have 12 hours to produce an idle animation for Daring Do? ATG challenge nummer 1 accepted!

An hour in, and I have a yawn animation completed. Working on blinking, closing eyes, eyes half open, etc. I'll do something with the legs, some wing stretching and so on, and probably just trace a bitmap for the background. At some point I'll have to record myself yawning and any other miscellaneous nosies I need. Luckily, I'm very tired. Wish me luck!

And the gif color palette strikes again!

Nice work!
If you're looking for suggestions at all, I'd say it might look a little better if you either pulled her cheek back or extend her chin a bit to give a slightly more three-dimensional look to her mouth.

I suppose since nothing is happening in this thread, I'll throw an update out here. A quarter of the way there!

At the moment, I've disregarded your advice, DeadParrot and Twins, for the sake of quantity over quality, given the time constraints.

Stretching, blinking. The unfurling of the wings is a little faster than what I'd like, but it was what I already had. I'll go back and slow it down.

Edit @DeadParrot, below

It's just that the tips of her wings go through the top of the canvas in the project. In the end I'll move her around and scale her so that all is well.

How dare you disregard our expertly crafted opinions!

The new additions look really good!
It's making me tired just watching…

(Maybe it's just a result of being turned into a gif, but the tips of her wings go out of frame at the top just slightly.)

Guys earlier today a QA tester for MLP:Fighting is Magic released a working build of the game without permission.

Some people are falsely claiming it is a demo, it is actually a leak. Please, If you see it do not download or spread it in any way. Report it immediately to the developers.

In other news, Alex S. is going on Hiatus so his new album will be delayed until further notice.

@Solaire:

I generally find Lyra's human obsession to be fucking hilarious, especially when she gets things WRONG about us. It's endlessly amusing

@ Regarding Dan vs Fluffy Pones:

I think the actual artist of Dan vs is the first to come up with Fluffy Ponies. He really hates what 4chan did with them though (He hates the entire fandom in general BTW)

@Vasquez:

IS IT REALLY YOUR BIRTHDAY? DON'T BE PLAYIN' WITH ME BOY!

Last edited Aug 02, 2012 at 11:11PM EDT

It has returned, in what should be its final incarnation! I had to redo most of the progress I made since the last one because fuck crashing. Also, the wings suddenly changed back to Soarin's color scheme for no apparent reason and they're a pain to fix.

So now I request advice: should I do a background? I've tried having her stand at the train station, but I'm no good at backgrounds. Any advice?

EDIT: As far as backgrounds go, this is enough for me.

First, my apologies to everyone for not being calm in my last couple of posts. My specific apologies to Fifths. The context made my post very insulting, and I am sorry about that. I don't want to bring it back up here and we're discussing it elsewhere, but if I insult someone publicly, then I feel as if I should apologize in kind.

Happy birthday, Daniel. Or to whomever.

Question not so much as a topic: Why do some people like sad stuff (in regards to Ponus.)

Twilight Sparkle may be interested in your answer, as well. No pressure.

@Daniel

It’s my birthday

Happy Birthday. Now enjoy some delicious cake

…and those cupcakes too

@Verbose

Why do some people like sad stuff (in regards to Ponus.)

Doesn't seem like a difficult question. We like our media to trigger a wide range of emotions, even unpleasant ones. After all, an experience is an experience and the more, the merrier. Why limit ponies to generate just cute and adorable feelings just because they are cute and adorable?

Last edited Aug 03, 2012 at 12:56AM EDT

@BSoD

Yeah. We've discussed it as a thread before, but I mostly wanted something to post instead of just apologizing to Fifths. And as I was going through my favorites on dA, I saw those. I think your explanation is close to mine, but I should go to bed now.

Having a steady full-time job is going to suck for me in terms of being active on the forum.

Verbose said:

I sometimes wonder that. It's not so much why sad stuff exists in our art and our fanfics, because like BSoD said, we like experiencing a wide range of emotions when it comes to entertainment. But in fanfiction especially, why does it seem like negative emotions are dominant? Personally, I don't think it's too hard to make a story depressing, but one that makes you feel good and genuinely enriched, now that's another matter. I think that's one of the reasons I like the show, actually; it manages to be very positive while not coming off as overly cloying, a rather difficult feat. In fanfiction, though, it whould appear that the vast majority is somewhere in the vicinity of dark/sad/bittersweet/depressing. That's probably one of the reasons DeadParrot's Tiny Wings story is so highly rated--it's a little sad, but it uses that emotion to accentuate the inspirational ending. That's the kind of story I prefer to read, but unfortunately, happy endings are kind of out of fashion these days, so I've become more and more wary of reading fanfics in general.

See? Even Twilight likes to get a smile from what she reads. Somewhat along the same lines, I like comedy as well, but only if it's witty, none of that ridiculous lowbrow stuff that Hollywood loves so much these days. That too is far more challenging to pull off.

Why do some people like sad stuff (in regards to Ponus.)

In terms of fanfiction, I like sadfics because usually the conflict is something tragic (i.e. someone dies, etc.) or something deep (loss, moving on, growing up, etc.). Granted, its hard to pull a good sadfic off, and most people usually pull off the same cliches (Pinkie is insane again, Scootaloo is still an orphan), but occasionally it makes for good reading (insert shameless promotion for Eternal).

And like everyone above said, the show already provides plenty of happy and somewhat comedic moments. So to complete that, there's all the sad stuff. Adding on to the fanfiction thing (as that's where most sad stuff is from), the appeal of fics is to see how the characters act in situations not yet shown in the show or never will be shown in the show. So it's interesting to see how they might act in more tragic situations.

Once again, that often relies upon how well written it might be. Most people can't pull it off.

And happy birthday to Vazquez. I'd post some cake, but Derpibooru is down.

@Sad stuff
Thanks for the shout-out, Dan!
Since you mentioned my story as an example, it should come as no surprise that I agree with you on just about everything you said.
I dislike 'sad for the sake of sad' kinds of stories and pictures.
For example:

That honestly does nothing for me.
It's sad, but it's without context and just seems like an arbitrary 'I bet if I kill this character, I can make people sad' kind of decision rather than something substantive (no offense to the artist or anything).
I, too, far prefer happiness and comedy, thus why I like cartoons in the first place, but if a story wants to use tragic elements, I much prefer them to lead to something happy or at the very least, bittersweet.
Actually, even an abjectly sad or depressing ending can be good if it is able to create some kind of uplifting feeling in the audience, though this is pretty difficult to pull off.
Just leaving a reader/viewer with a 'sad' scenario and no resolution makes it feel more like an appeal to emotion than a true attempt at a story.

Now, another example:

I actually like this one.
Yes, it's a one-shot sad pic, but it has it's origins in the show (Spike wasn't at Twilight's birthday in Sweet and Elite) and uses that to give context to the sadness.
This gets much more of an emotional reaction out of me than Spike's grave up above for that reason.

@Derpy Vasquez
Happy birthday! (though I think I may have missed it yesterday…)
Don't forget to blow out the candles!

@Vasquez:

@Exudes:

Not bad, overall. The mouth is a bit odd, in my opinion, but it's probably just perspective or some shit I don't really know about because I can't animate worth a shit.

@Sad stuff:

Art is, by definition, something to evoke emotions and feeling in somebody. For as long as art has existed, sad stuff has stood strong in all cultures. Theater, television, movies, literature, paintings, etc. have had sad stuff, because people enjoy feeling emotions, feeling connected, and learning what it's like to feel depressed and all of that.

The ponies, as a whole, are easy to connect to because they're represented with fairly deep personalities and the show and are very 'human', in a sense. They're easy to relate to and feel for, especially when they go through tough times and everything. That's why a lot of people like Fluttershy and the episodes Hurricane Fluttershy. She can easily evoke sadness when she gets upset because she's represented as a delicate figure.

Fan-fic writers and artists recognize how easy it is to evoke emotion with ponies, especially with sad stuff, so they use that as a way to make art. Of course, taste comes into effect, so people might not like all sad things, or might not feel the sad of a certain piece of art. My Little Dashie is an example, as it seems most of the people here shed maybe one tear while reading it, while I cried so hard that my shirt became stained with tears, both from wiping them off with it and the tears dripping down. Lots of variables come into effect, but generally-speaking, it's easy to make art that evokes emotions with the ponies, especially sad ones, because they're so human, so familiar, and so easy to relate to. That was really kind of Hasbro's intent, seeing as the show is supposed to teach lessons and show girls how life works, in a sense. Characters that can be related to help that goal, and also help artists make the aforementioned sad artwork, as well as just artwork in general.

The reason I like it, personally, stems mostly from just enjoying a good story. A lot of the time sad-fics are fairly well-written, as opposed to Grimdarks and clop-fics. I also tend to enjoy sad stuff more than Grimdark stuff, too, but that's not saying much, really.

First off, to Daniel:

DeadParrot Wrote:

@Derpy Vasquez

ARE YOU KIDDING? Considering how old he is… he'd probably die or something.

Verbose wrote:

My answer is a bit weird, sure people like emotional pulling of the heartstrings and all but….I can't shake the fact that some people just want to be unhappy.

I have met so many people in this fandom who are just plain incredibly depressed and verge on the suicidal (trust me, it's not any of you.) and insist on reading grimdark and sadfics with Ponu.

Now I don't doubt that the majority of the sadfic/pic readers/writers/artists are perfectly normal well adjusted people….but I can't shake the feeling that a significant segment are genuinely people who are incredibly depressed with their lives.

Again, maybe it's just me.

In other news:

I'll give credit where credit is due. BSoD plays a mean game of TF2 (I think I dominated him at one point as well FOR FUCKS SAKE GET YOUR MINDS OUT THE GUTTER, I DIDN'T MEAN IT THAT WAY)

I had an event recently on my Brony TF2 server. In fact, it was mentioned in this Nightly roundup on EqD:

http://www.equestriadaily.com/2012/08/nightly-roundup-395.html#idc-cover

That was actually a big mistake, I had trouble getting on the damn server itself and one third of the players were outside Australia and New Zealand, hell we had Europeans joining with 300+ ping. I did state you don't have to be an Aussie or a Brony to join but I think next event I'll put a disclaimer stating that I reserve the right to kick you if the server is full to make room for more Aussies.

@Verbose's apology.

I appreciate it.

@Sad Pony

Aristotle comments on this in his poetics. Tragedy was really popular in ancient Greece, and Aristotle wondered why it was that we take pleasure from what is ostensibly an emotionally painful experience. Aristotle figured that it was because it was cathartic, watching tragedy allows us to vicariously live through the characters and face our own fears and pains that we have buried inside, and thus purge ourselves of them. It's kind of a "cry it out" thing, because the crying makes you feel better afterwards. Aristotle would say that because we like the ponies so much, we're able to sympathize with them, and that makes them good proxies to experience and purge emotional pain.

Honestly, I don't think Aristotle's answer sufficently explains why humans enjoy tragedy. Ya, there might be a cathartic element to it, but there's more to it then that. When I'm hungover and I feel terrible, it's true that barfing my brains out will make me feel better afterwards, but that doesn't mean I enjoy the barfing itself the way I legitimately enjoy the experience of watching a tragedy. I think there can be a kind of beauty to sadness, a weird kind of pleasure mixed with the pain, a heightening of emotional sensation. It's kind of a rush in the same way that getting scared can be kind of a rush. Horrors and tragedies alike allow us to experience the rush of getting chased by an axe murderer or losing a loved one without, you know, actually getting chased by an axe murderer or losing a loved one.

And the reason people like Tiny Wings is because Deadparrot found a novel way to explore Scootabuse, which apparently we can't get enough of. My God, what is it about this happy, energetic little filly that makes everyone want to give her the most miserable life possible?

@RandomMan

Cutie marks continue to be the bane of my existence. Can't put them on the same symbol as the leg or they clip with the body, can't put them on the same symbol as the body or they won't move with the leg, so I have to keep them independent, and in this instance clothes make everything much more complicated. But I did admittedly get a little lazy with this one; it was pretty much just a placeholder that I forgot about.

So today's challenge: draw a pony on the move. How long can one person keep up making an animation a day?

Sad ponies?

I enjoy a sadfic every now and then. I can see the appeal, but I'll have to get back to you on what I actually see. That being said, sad art really doesn't do it for me; sadness is an emotion I can only feel with context, and a (frankly shallow) picture of, say, Rainbow Dash standing over Pinkie Pie's grave means nothing to me. I need context: the end result is not what makes me sad, it's what it takes to get there. Pinkie Pie being dead might be a bit of a downer, but the true sadness would come from the events leading up to her death and someone else's reaction and dealing with ir (or not).

I think people are also much more willing to relate to sadness. Either they've undergone similarly traumatic events, or they might be willing to make themselves a little sad and exaggerate their feelings to relate, and that makes them feel better. There is a strange sort of happiness that comes from proper sadness. I agree with Fifths when he says that it allows us to experience emotions that we normally don't care to experience.

Gentlemen, we have a map: BIGGER

Guess what?
It was 'Los Pegasus' as a play on Los Angeles, not Las Vegas!
I was right for once!

We also have a full-cast photo-op like we got for season one: BIGGER

God damn, Lyra is happy!
Gotta love the CMCs all over Luna, too!
And Vinyl and Octavia over on the right!
And the Lebowski ponies!
And Screwball sitting on the Discord statue!
GAH, TOO MUSH AWESOME!

Hey Guy's I got my hands on a cop-
so I shouldn't have downloaded that… WELL TOO LATE. I thought it was a demo, who leaked it is going to get into a fuck ton of trouble, and frankly… I'm having fun at his expense.
So if any of you guy's have this game all I have to say is that It resembles Street Fighter heavily with its animation, I didn't notice how pixelated it was in the alpha gameplay, I like the arcade feel but Anti-Analysing would be cool in the official release, so it can look more like the cartoon. I got my Elite Hax skills on and learned that in the Doc file the game has you can change the stages (Which are Sweet apple acres, Twilight's Library, Rarities show room, and Clouds dale.) And the game speed so you can essentially make it turbo like in SF. There's some CPU settings I don't understand and you can change the resolution, plus the key's but it runs on numbers so I have no idea which is which but that is why you can change the controls in the settings thingy on the game window.

Look here's a screen cap from me messing around.

I did question that "DO NOT REDISTRIBUTE" thing… oh well.

^ Quoting this from the main website:

We're not stopping anyone from playing the leak. Just bear in mind that's it's an unfinished version of the game, which happened to be leaked right before we got to a major content update. You can have fun playing the game if you want to. We won't be linking the download, nor giving technical support or taking gameplay feedback relative to the build, due to the fact that as of tonight, it is an already OUTDATED patch.

So, yup.

Moar posters!

Link of biggening

How much do I want that Chaos is Magic poster? Quite a bit, actually. And finally, a map, to ruin all the fanons! Cherimac ship (close enough), to ruin a lot of the fanons! Daring Do, because other ponies cannot best pony! Vinyl and Octavia, to encourage all the fanons!

And Applejack, relegated to background pony status, as is should.

And who's that pony with the periwinkle and white mane behind Fancypants and Fleur de Leis? I know a good looking pony when I see one.

Edit @Sketch, below

That's because she wasn't in season 2. I noticed a worrying lack of Soarin', which is either because I'm blind or because he wasn't in season 2 either, because I can't remember. But Nightmare Moon is in the Chaos is Magic poster.

I like how Discord is admiring his statue and how Luna is all Do Not Want with the CMC. Speaking of Luna though, I notice a complete lack of Nightmare Moon.

Edit: Derp, it says Season 2.

Last edited Aug 03, 2012 at 06:31PM EDT

@Nathan

You know, it really doesn't matter that you didn't leak the original and that you thought the download was a demo, you're still playing a stolen version of the game that the creators would prefer you didn't AND sharing information on it which I'm sure they REALLY wish you didn't all the while knowing you're going against their wishes.

So you didn't pick the forbidden fruit, you're still eating it and sharing it. If I were you, I'd delete your post from KYM and the game from your drive.

Colorblind here so I'm not sure if this is 'periwinkle,' but please tell me you're not talking about this pony:

Cause he's both male and a child, dude…
(Not that there's anything wrong with the 'male' part or anything but yeah…)

Now if you're talking about the one behind him, that's Allie Way.
Yes, very punny.

Fine, Gosh I didn't even know it was a leak, I downloaded it because I wanted to play it, I highly doubt you guy's would have putted that chance down either if you had the chance to download it. Now that I read the letter there is no big deal either, it's not like I leaked it. So yeah I got my hands on a copy, am I at fault here? Blame the distributor not the consumer. I shared that information because I know that if any of you guys had a copy you could get the most out of it. Shit, I didn't even share what to edit in the Doc so you can mod it.

That comment was overkill fifths. The producers said they were fine with it, what done is done, might as well make it an open alpha while at it. I'm not a fan either that one of the testers was so low to leak it, but that doesn't put the people who are unaware of the facts at blame.

I wouldn't hold your breath there. As much as I'd like to see that, I bet they're going to be even more tight lipped about it now for obvious reasons.

@ Fighting is Magic Leak:

The way I see it, Mane6 is handling their leak like SuperBot did with their leak of the PSASBR beta. They're not really encoraging it more than that their using the sudden situation to help hype up their respective fighting games. Good for me anyways, I was gonna get both sooner or later.

@Map of Equestria

That's actually really interesting in a number of ways. Notice that it clearly indicates that there are regions which are home to Griffins/Griffons and Dragons far to the East and Southeast respectively, which are clearly not part of Equestria. Therefore, it would seem that Equestria doesn't encompass the entire world, just as I suspected.

Also, check this out:

Never before has my headcanon been so officially vindicated! You see, quite a while ago I drew up some rather bad concept art for Los Pegasus, which I will now post for your viewing pleasure.

Pardon the terrible artwork, but notice the similarities? Half of the city is on the ground, and the rest is in the clouds, not to mention a close proximity to mountains (I'll just say my picture is looking at it from the North).

And of course like DeadParrot pointed out, the spelling is officially LOS Pegasus now, not LAS Pegasus. It's also west coast, close to "Applewood", etc. Hence, not a parody of Vegas. Good times.

As an afterthought, all the similarities to the North American Continent (they even placed Manehattan on an island in the Northeast) makes it seem even more like a parallel world to ours or some such, rather than merely another place in this universe. Not that a little bit of trivia like that would matter to any but the most hardcore nerdy fanfic writers, but eh.

Oh yeah, Fighting Is Magic. Yeah, that was pretty low of the quality assurance tester to go revealing all that stuff. I suppose the Mane6 team have realized by now that there's no stopping the spread though, so they're opted to just roll with it, and simply hope that people give regard to their disclaimers of it being "not a finished product".

@Random

Ok Random, let's say someone robs your house and sells me one of your valuables. I didn't buy it knowing it was stolen, but I learn that it was soon afterwards. When you come to my house to get your valuable back, am I just allowed to keep it because I didn't know upon purchase it was stolen?

But regardless, all of this is moot if the creators said they're ok with it.

@Dead Parrot

…And he's a pony…you forgot to mention that part.

Just saying, if you're gonna bring up the male and the child part, you might as well bring up the pony part.

…Gay, pedophillia-bestiality fetish

huh

@Fifths: Honestly, these ponies are sentient. I wouldn't call it bestiality when they're more then capable of thinking for themselves.

As for the rest….yeah, but like Dead Parrot mentioned, he might've been pointing out Ally Way instead.

@Fifths

this is what comes to my mind when ever you mention the word moot

O hai guise, I have yet another thing to share. I had a debate with a Brony over if the song Everypony's gay for Breaburn sounds like Daft Punk. To me it does, So I decided to whip out Virtual DJ, and I made this, I doesn't prove that the original sounds like Daft Punk, but it sure does prove that it sounds good with Daft Punk.

At least you didn't stoop to Anormulus's level. He basically posted in the comment section "OMG GUIZE, TEH GAME LEAKED. HERES THE LINX, STEAL AWAY!". What a douche

Yea, you did get a domination on me at one point, I took a real pounding from behind…fuck STOP GIGGLING YOU IMMATURE TWATS, I DIDN'T MEAN IT THAT WAY EITHER

That was when my team was on offense on dust bowl and you were a defending engineer. As you know; scouts do not fare well against level 3 sentries and I got too close to your one a few too many times. I had to change class to soldier in order to undo that.

That was a good scouting run though, I just recently got my hands on the flying Guillotine and I was trying to get as many cleaves with it as possible. So much fun. Then at that last game I switched to Heavy (since nobody else was one) and suddenly it's so damn easy to get kills

Also the Boombox is fantastic, I thank you very much for it

@Sketch

Oh those comments, they are hilarious, and I only have one thing to say to the people hating on the ponies and Rooster Teeth for liking the ponies.

I like that about Youtube as well. It may sound sadistic but I really do enjoy watching people get butthurt over ponies as if their whole world just collapsed at the hand of Twilight Sparkle. I guess I just like watching the world burn.

@BSoD: Really. I mean honestly, it's their channel, they can post whatever teh Hell they want, and if that's ponies, so bet it.

But yeah, it makes me think of this picture I found on a 50 Shades of Grey cover that had Fluttershy on it and had a downrating while the rest didn't.

@Dem posters:

Well, my room is already covered from top-to-bottom with game poster and GameInformer covers, but I could fit those posters in (and I will) if they're for sale.

God, I hope they're for sale.

@Fighting is Magic:

Leaks are for scrubs that don't have a cryogenic tube in their bathroom.

I really don't like the leak, and I won't be downloading it. It's unfair to the devs to have something they're making for free stolen and circulated without permission. I can understand downloading it by accident, but I think the noble thing to do would be to uninstall it.

@Nathan:
