I guess you could say that episode…rocked! lol.

There were so many great things about Maude.
Also, I got this gem from the livestream I was in.

Maud is one of the Sediments of Harmony.

Lastly, if you haven't read the Pinkie Palooza book, here's an excerpt that names some of the other family members.

(Now who wants to play hide and go seek with Bolder?)

Retcon sister is best sister. I liked this episode, Maud's deadpan humor was a welcome sight considering the way the pictures made her seem like she'd be that diva/snob of the family. Thank god I was wrong. Could've been better but it was a nice episode all in all. Whole time watching Maud I just kept saying "Good thing Pinkie Pie got away from that Rock Farm when she had the chance." Also was nice to see that despite not connecting to the Mane 6 as well she was still a great sister for Pinkie Pie.

Also: Boulder is best pet, next to Tank and Gummy.

But yeah, Maud is probably one of the best characters of the week in the series. There's just something about dat monotone. 8.3/10 for this episode.

Anyways, I really liked this episode.

I have to agree here, I thought that this was going to be a bully episode, and I'm pretty happy that it wasn't.

I thought the episode itself was pretty bland and slow; Maud herself was the only thing that salvaged it. But goddamn she is definitely in my top 5 favorite ponies now.
The ending was extra adorable in hindsight though: Maud says she doesn't even like candy, but it was her that invented that secret rock candy recipe and shared it with Pinkie. dat sisterly love <3

Pinkie Pie is one of those characters that always stood out to me, but Maud clearly stole the show.

I love this episode. I wanna watch it again. In fact, I feel like watching it again right now.

But what was her cutie mark?

Seeing as the bulk of this episode was about the mane 5 not connecting with Maude through their talents/hobbies, I really thought there was going to be some big reveal about what Maude's cutie mark/special talent would be that would help them all connect with each other. Not really a complaint, I like when the show doesn't go the way I think it will. The whole rock thing was getting a little old by the end of the episode, but it all wrapped up on a really sweet note so that makes me happy. I would actually love to see Maude in another episode, but I doubt we will see her again.

Wait, so you're saying that the part of the episode which salvaged its blandness was the character whose defining trait is her fathomless blandness?

It's like she sent things so far around the blandness block that they came around the other side and actually became pretty exciting.

Also, on a mostly unrelated note: what's with all of the academic ponies? First Fluttershy goes on a research trip to study the breezies, then Maud comes to visit before heading off to go study rocks. Add best OCD pony on top of that and we've got a nice coterie of scholarship on our hands. I mean, it's pretty neat and everything, and I'm enjoying it immensely, but it's also rather unexpected.

This show has an unhealthy obsession with personifying rocks.

"Dis is one great pahty, Tom. You really outdone yahself."
"I'm just wondering when Dumb Rock and Boulder are going to get here."

The pun lovers are going to have a field day with this episode.

You're all not being very gneiss with all these rock puns. I think you're taking them for granite. It's like adding pepper to your food without a pinch of basalt. It leaves them a little… bland.

@Episode
Another fairly standard episode. Not really anything "awesome" happened or made it stand out. Maud was pretty decent, although I wished they did more with her personality then copy/paste the "emotionless girl" stereotype. At least they added a little depth with her love of Pinkie.

My only major complaint was the ending. You have: 1) A recently crowned princess with the telekinetic abilities to lift and move an Ursa Minor several miles 2) A unicorn who possesses very finely tuned telekinetic abilities 3) One of the fastest pegasi in the country and 4) an earth pony who's leg strength is enough to stop a fully loaded passenger cart careening down a hill. Why did they all sit on their asses?

I know Pinkie's annoying, but you don't have to outright want to kill her via negligence.

The thing that makes us click and creates a special bond between us is how much we all love Pinkie Pie!

Yeah, you sure showed just how much you love her, all right. I also couldn't help but scratch my head at the "conflict." So they're not exactly becoming best friends? So? It's not like you have to instantly like each other and buddy up. Sometimes, all you can be are just acquaintances.

6.5/10.

So… We have a kuudere now?

Is there any youtube leak for this episode? I am just kinda interested in kuuderes but i am too lazy and don't care enough to search for it.. Let me know if there is any.

Do you think you're the only one who loves the idea of education? How could there be any doubt of the mlp's pro-academic stance after that camptastic school special where Dash learns how to read? No, like everyone, the show loves the idea of higher education, that idea which promises great social achievement and spiritual enrichment if you but come and learn the guarded secrets of the wise doctors. 'Come, hear things of Ulysses which Homer never knew' they say 'Hear the paradoxes of his wandering heart, recognize the same in your own, and know that we wise doctors have mastered both by our knowing.' Such bullshit, and a blatant violation of those warnings against hubris which the Greeks prescribed.

Higher education is swiftly becoming of little use in the world of practical society, and the idea that all that cultural nihilism and postmodern diarrhea spewing out the crusty orifices of university can provide any greater personal fulfillment is laughable. Education has taken the place of religion and become the substitute for meaning with which to fill our pathetic, meaningless lives. The incoherent babble of our wise doctors are the psalms with which we fill our holy text books, things which few read and none understand. Realize now, Platus, that you are no more than the dust on their pages. Know it and despair!

Uhhh…so yeah. In answer to your question, that is why I think they like to include academic pones.

Ok, I'm going to keep my response brief: for someone who has expended so many words describing how incomprehensible "postmodern" writers are, you seem to have remarkable confidence in your opinion that the material is a waste of time. The fact that you lack the readerly skill and/or patience to get through a text bears no relation to the value of the ideas contained within, and is certainly no indication that the contents are "diarrhea."

Furthermore, I would appreciate it if you directed your criticisms at the actual academia that currently exists, and not the imaginary academia that you seem to have cobbled together from repeated viewings of The Dead Poets Society. A humanities education today not only provides a range of subjects touching on a far more diverse set of cultural arenas than it did several decades ago – a fact that is owed to the tireless work of the very feminist, post-colonial, and queer-theory scholars who you deride under the inadequately broad term "postmodern" – but it will also be constructed with the explicit goal of providing intellectual and theoretical tools to criticize the dictatorial power arrangement that you so decry.

In short, the dryness that you perceive in academia is due almost exclusively to the shallowness of your own understanding – a tragedy made all the worse by the ease with which it could have been avoided.

"Know it and despair!"

Does this work?

@Education:
I must say, knowledge is obviously good but I DESPISE formal education.
It's a tedious, horrible, nonsensical mangling of a good idea.
They take learning and make it an awful chore and all the time expecting you to have the time of your fucking life while ruining even the educational content of this crap with nonsense all about "Try it yourself!", "Just have a go!", "Think about it yourself!", "Work with your fellow students!" and other stupid shit like that, along with that "Answer a question with a question" jackassery! Hey you stuck up pricks, how about just telling us and explaining to us because y'know YOU KNOW THIS STUFF AND WE DON'T?! And no, it doesn't work better, the end result is the exact same: After being educated about X, you now know about X. If you're concerned that someone's not going to understand it if you just tell them, explain more! Get them to understand! Because if we could just "figure it out" but "trying for ourselves" then education wouldn't be needed, you could just flop the exam in front of someone and then if they're good at that subject then they'd "figure it out" and ace it, the fact that this doesn't work shows that you can't just have people "figure it out" like that. Yes, someone had to figure stuff out to discover things in the first place but that's different, that's when dealing with stuff we don't already know and let's not forget that:
1) It takes GENIUSES ages and ages to do this, and they're generally way smarter and better prepared than a student by definition.
2) The original result from this is usually bad and wrong in some way.
So when you have access to the (as far as anyone can currently know) correct version, it does no good to be hiding it from us while trying to make us outdo Einstein and Newton, inevitably resulting in giving up, cheating or cutting corners, all the while spending far longer on it getting far worse results.
While we're at it, how about NOT forcing us to do stupid crap we don't want to do, don't need to do and gain nothing from doing? Seriously, I'm at University and they're still forcing me to do stuff that:
1) I'm not interested in.
2) I suck it and find far too difficult.
3) I don't need and will never use again.
4) Doesn't remotely enrich me as a person.
5) Takes time away from better things that don't fall victim to those last four problems.
And how about not HIDING IMPORTANT RESOURCES from us for dumbass reasons?

Yes, I'm mad. Very mad. Absolutely bloody furious!
Honestly, if I had useful, good skills which would give me an income and reason to exist that didn't require a Math degree, I'd have quit by now rather than let this hippy-dippy bullshit continue to ruin my life!

I suppose this ends my angry drunken rant… Should I apologize? I get the feeling that I'm ruining the thread right now…

@CrashGordon94
Yeah.. That was quite interesting than other episodes i have ever watched. You know why?
Because somehow i see myself in the brony community when i look at Maud pie..
I think i have found the best pony.

Like TSG said, nothing really happened aside from Maud's existence to make the episode stand out. The plot was painfully predictable and standard once Maud said her first line: Maud and Mane 6 minus Pinkie fail to connect well. Pinkie doesn't like that. Compromise that friends of a friend might not get along the best despite the shared link. Fin. And though I still liked her as a character, I felt that they spent a bit too long showing that Maud is bad at being social/expressive and likes rocks.

But enough of me being a wet towel, random thought time: anyone else think that Big Mac and Maud would've made good friends? They're both quiet, superstrong elder siblings that dearly love their little sisters.
…I wonder which one would win in an arm-wrestle.

@Platus

Such conceit. Do you really think my description applies only to those academics you dislike? Are you so blind to think that it cannot be applied to you as well? Do you not recognize that the whole institution of human learning is fundamentally flawed?

I think your ideologies foolish, Platus, but perhaps I'm wrong. Perhaps I am the fool and underneath all that word salad you have discovered some real knowledge which I do not know, but I am sure it has not exceeded that breed of wisdom which Socrates called human wisdom. All have a claim in that human wisdom, but only a part of it, and none of it means a damned thing in the end really. In either case, be you the fool or I, we will both be dead in a couple years and everything either of us ever said long forgotten in not many years after that. Wiser men shall look at your academic icons, new Nietzsches will be born to identify your flaws mixed with your human wisdom, if there is indeed any wisdom there at all, and you too shall become one of those shameful memories, an old fool for new fools to ridicule just as you now ridicule last season's philosophy. There is nothing new under the sun.

Do you have anything to offer me to refute that terrible truth of the human condition? If you do not, then I say that all your vaunted learning boils down to no more than a vanity. But I ask you Is it even a useful vanity? At least the sciences give us new tools with which to make life easier, for whatever good there is in making more efficient a fundamentally useless labor. You can't even do that. At best, you provide the battle slogans for those who rise up in revolt because their material conditions and animal wills have stirred them to it anyway. You're simply making up new lyrics to an old melody which lay always in the heart of man. Do not presume yourself like to whatever is that dread thing which first composed the tune.

I do not resent you so much for your academics, but find your academic arrogance most distasteful.

@Fifths & @Platus
Both of you need to knock this shit off. Now. This is a place to argue about magical ponies who solve their problems with friendship, love, and magic, NOT a place for you two to argue philosophical differences and learning levels.

Tone it down, or so help me I will make you two hold hands until things start getting awkward with your prospective bedmates.

Now pick a horse and tell everyone why he or she is your favorite. At least then, when you two start snapping at each other, you'll be on topic.

@Harshwhinny

You're absolutely right. This argument got out of hand. We've taken it into the PMs. Thanks for stepping in.

Anyway, favorite tiny cartoon horse: It's been Twiilight since season one. She's basically what I would be if you changed my gender, species, colour, planet, research interests, education, family history, political affiliations, intelligence, and magic-ed-ness. We're practically twins!

I think this is going to be one of my favorites of this season. Maud's non-expression was something I really identified with, so I was really happy when they finally understood what kind of person she was. As soon as I saw Maud in the previews I just knew that was the angle they were gonna take with her, which for me was confirmed as soon as I knew about the candy necklaces ("gasp, she really does care."). And the way Maud just sprung into action, no wasting time with an emotional display, just doing what she knows must be done. And the whole episode I was thinking, "don't worry guys, she really does care, her actions thus far have already shown this." I also especially loved how despite Pinkie being so different, she could still read Maud beyond her lack of expression. I just, AHH! Seriously one of the best of this season for me, good enough for me to actually want to make a post about how much I liked it. Favorite new character as well. 3.14/pi

@Harshwhinny/Crazy C:
Is the favorite pony instruction only for those two, or for everyone in the thread?

@BSOD: I must say pretty damn awesome, given the reaction Alex had. The guy was surprisingly adverse to the show and such, but this one character made him not only want to watch an episode but also made the idea of being a fan conceivable to him. Even if it stops here and he never takes it any further, that's some damn powerful stuff!

@ Maud

If that ain't poetry right there, then I don't know what is.
Oh, and also… love how she just made everypony look for Boulder only to have it in her pocket and keep the other pets waiting.

@ Blue
Here's fanart for ya.

@ Favorite Pony

I need to find it in me to shift my fave pony list… #1 is still Lyra, but I'm now considering Luna or Discord to replace Flutters as my #2…

Okay then.
Well, my favorite remains Twilight Sparkle, I find it somewhat difficult to explain but she has the most appealing personality to me, as well as being the one I identify with the most.
Plus she spawned my favorite MLP meme, which is a nice little bonus.

Uh…yea….if being the unimpressed bystander that looks at us with a face of disapproval counts as being a conceivable fan

I was referring to this line:

Because somehow i see myself in the brony community when i look at Maud pie..

Maybe I'm reading it wrong or didn't explain what I was saying right but I was meaning that her having ^this effect on him is pretty impressive when compared to what he's previously said on the subject.

What's this? Is that someone getting out of line and boarding the ride that I see? You may deny it now, but once you find yourself on Google Images or DeviantART scouring for pictures of her, or on the newly created Maud Waifu threads on /mlp/ (which has some really fascinating clop that uses her emotionlessness), or you can't bear to wait when the next episode with Maud is announced you'll realize in horror that your buckled in and there is no escape.

@Academia debate
It's all just a gigantic trillion dollar student loan bubble. I realized that when my English teacher told us he was working a second job at Starbucks. Once the bubble pops, our post-industrial society's gonna get hit hard by the realization that college really isn't worth much. It's just a piece of paper that company's look at. Experience is what really defines things.

As someone who is in his fourth semester, I can safely say that I have learned almost nothing that I couldn't otherwise know from scouring Wikipedia for a few hours. Many of my classes are ludicrously easy specifically because I've scoured Wikipedia.

If you're in high school, safe yourself the trouble: get into skill trades, become an electrician/plumber/wielder, and then while you're raking in 80k a year with no debt, you can go on Wikipedia and become just as "intellectual" as my English professor working at Starbucks.

Back on topic,

Where's my Maud ponification and/or other Evangelion related ponified fanart?!

Nope. Brony observe mod reactivated. I'll take "Maud Pie" with me and watch you guys being stuck on the ride again.

I wouldn't mind a Maud Waifu thread though.

Remembered "Smile" vidya? Here is a super secret ending edition from Mister Davie!

@New episode

I got bored, and not the kind involving the drills usually used to dig into rocks. No, I mean I didn't care much for this episode.

…Also… Maud doesn't seem like the kind of character that I can do much with unless we completely magic something out of nothing.

…And this comes out of much the same reason she can't connect with the others… She's so one note on such an obscure topic that it basically DOES take adding new personality traits to do anything with her.

Not to mention… The main thing that fills up most of the "things you can do with a character, is indeed having chemistry with other characters. If she's not that interesting to the mane 6, you're pretty much stuck making her go solo.

In other words… The moment I start using Maud as a character is the moment I come up with a re-imagining of her character.

@Maud's Cutie Mark Question

I get the feeling she's actually a blank flank who's filled the void in her heart with the only thing she knows… Rocks.

… And Ironically she might have found herself unwilling to try new things now so she might never find the thing she was meant for.

I can just imagine… What if she's coaxed into trying a computer game for the first time and she suddenly starts blurting out things she didn't know she knew about computers while criticizing the game and boasting that she could make a better one, and suddenly finds out she likes computers…

…Followed by one cutie mark and prompt internal nirvana as she suddenly finds herself seeing binary numbers flashing across her retina.

…Or not. This is stupid.

@Blue Screen

Of course Maud is badass. She smashes giant rocks as if it were nothing. Also I've seen fanart of her, there's already porn, I've checked.

@Alex Mercer

You were a brony the moment you decided to post in a pony thread. Don't deny it.

@Smile Vidya Super Secret Ending:

My sides. Did you see them? They did a Sonic Rainboom as they left for space.

@Maud Episode:

I kinda wish Rarity had more interaction with Maud. I mean they both like rocks right? xD

Anyways, have a d'aaaaw moment:

And also @Maud eating rocks:

I guess she officially has Lithophagia. Not too far off from the pre-show image we had of her.

Finally, have something non-show related…sorta…

@Episode
Loved it, I found Maud hilarious in her own way. Her stone cold personality was magnificently portrayed to a certain manner to make her seem interesting. Best of all are the new puns that have been created. 8.5/10

Also, what is up with the mushroom clouds? First the Sonic Rainboom, now Maud's rock throw of destruction. Hmm, any of you have an idea what it should be named? All I can think of is Maud I (Pun on the Mk I) or MinuteMaud…

@Irrelevant Stuff
I just learned that using Anyways is incorrect… My whole life has been a lie!

Inkscape is quite a nice tool for vectoring. Used it to vector my profile image.Link if interested. Easy to learn, but time consuming.

You know what I just realized folks?

This pony's whole life revolves around rocks, she's practically obsessed with rocks she's kinda like……

This pony whose whole life revolves around apples, she's practically obsessed with Apples. Now Imma make a crackpot theory right now but I think Maud being the boring (on purpose) rock pony and Applejack being the silly boring (hopefully on purpose) apple pony is a sign that the Pies and the Apples ARE related. /crackpot.

I seriously hope we never get a definite answer to the Pie/Apple family relation, instead we get little very subtle references towards the two being related.

PS: It's hard to find a picture of Maud or Applejack to use in a thread from Derpibooru because you have to sift through all the porn. The glorious porn.
