In 2011, Colbert gave "a big shoutout, here, out there, to all my bronies who may be watching." and he did it again, in a future episode. In 2012, he finally researched what bronies are, and in an April 2012 episode, he opened with "I want to very specifically not give a shout out to my Bronies tonight. I feel like I have been sucked into a dark corner of humanity, and am crawling my way back to the light."

Please note that Colbert plays a character on his show. We don't know his true thoughts on the fandom.

Yeah, I remember those. Also, he's from my hometown. So that's neat.

Huh, didn't Colbert say something a while ago about not wanting to make any more brony references? I could be remembering things wrong.

You never take Colbert seriously, after making the comment about being sucked into a dark corner of the internet he made another brony comment later that year saying "Here's a shoutout to all my Bronies out there" Bronies getting much more applause this time as they weren't that obscure group they were during his first reference "and I STILL don't know what that means."

Also, he's Stephen Colbert. I don't know what goes on in that head of his when he's writing for his show, I imagine he sits in a dark room and talks to himself until he gets some good ass jokes out there. Must be a pretty dark place in there.

I try to limit my daily intake of carcinogens.

Mostly, I’ve been seeing Spike shipping, plane ponies and, well that’s it… What is up with the fandom?

/mlp/. That's what. Ever since the spikeabuse became more pronounced in S4, they've had a pityboner for him. Remember those "Spike kidnaps and tries to kill McCarthy and the other writers" comics? Those came from /mlp/. Plane ponies is just another thing over there that "caught on." Like Pizzapony, crotchtits, batponies, or, more recently, whorepony. When your choices are crappy "anon in Equestria" greentext stories, declaring the fandom's dying, arguing about whether Katielestia's canon or not, or some new pony to circlejerk over, you'd be amazed how popular some things can get.

It's not quite at shitstorm levels, but it's still something. Thank god very few in the fandom actually pay attention to the comics (I've yet to see them used or referenced in a fanfic) or we'd probably have a pretty big "is it canon" fight on our hands.

He'll be taking over for Letterman soon and retire the "character", so we might one day get his actual opinion on the subject. Being an entertainer and someone who has to manage his image, I'd say he probably holds a fairly neutral opinion of it. It's definitely the "safest" approach--don't piss of the bronies, don't piss off the "foam at the mouth when a pony appears on facebook" people. It's a win-win.

@Caramel

Dear lord! The gayness for Braeburn has been Rainbow powered!

Do you realize what this means!? Gayest pone + Rainbow power…this is possibly the gayest things in all existence!

My eyes cannot avert from the handsomeness!

Bisexuals represent! Best of both worlds, baby!

[Disclaimer: I do not subscribe to the notion that Braeburn is bi as the above image may suggest. No he's completely flaming. Image only used because it's Braeburn and this is still a Brae thread.]

Related topic: The sexuality of the MLP characters is discussed a lot. People love to guess who is what because it's what we do as a society: perv into the sexual orientations of others. What's your headcanon on each characters sexuality?

My take goes like this [Headcanon only. DOES NOT apply in fanon shipping]

Twilight:
Fandom says: lezzomabian with the other princesses
I say: Borderline Asexual.
She's too business to be seen as a sexually active character for me

Fluttershy:
Fandom says: Asexual, straight with Mac or gay for Dashie
I say: Straight leaning, Demisexual. I bet she's all for stallions like Big Mac and I just say that because Fluttermac is adorable but she's likely too absorbed in animals to care about her sex life.

Rarity
Fandom says: Dominatrix bisexual
I say: Hard leaning straight.
Rarity has indicated in several episodes that she's sure into her handsome fine gentlemen and I doubt she'd look the other way. No doubt on this one

Pinkie:
Fandom says: Undecided.
I say: Highly active Pansexual. Consider she's game for just about anything. Being pan means you don't identify gender/sex at all. It's nothing to you. It's probably nothing to pinkie either. All she sees is fun opportunities no matter what she's dealing with

Dash:
Fandom says: Hardcore lesbutchian tommyboy
I say:

Because I hate the notion that her rainbow appearance implies anything. So I call her bi in protest. Even though she could go totally gay for Spitfire or Daring Do at any given moment. Her shipping with Soarin is too cute to ignore. Just to find an equal ground I say she's bi. And also because of stuff like this

Soarin and Spitfire
Fandom says: Gay, bi or straight
I say: Bi
These two are also bi in order to complete the bi trifecta that is Soardashfire. If you point out that a trifecta with two females makes Soarin nothing but straight; I remind you about Soarburn.

Derpy and the doctor
Fandom says: straight
I say: straight
Derpy is a wife to a timelord husband and a mother of children. Both completely straight.

Big Mac, Brae and Caramel
Fandom says: GAAAAAAAAAAY
I say: GAAAAAAAAAAY

Lyra and Bonbon
Fandom says: Lezzos
I say: Bonbon is gay. But Lyra is bi because that's perfectly okay. And also because she's mah waifu and I want to believe she'd be interested in me

Vinyl and Tavi
Fandom says: Lezzos again
I say: Just friends, both likely straight
We've got enough lesbians already. I prefer the headcanon that they are just lifelong frenemies

The Royal Sisters
Fandom says: Lemons
I say: Fine, fandom, I'll give you this one. Lesbians they are. With each other of course.

Anyway that's all just headcanon. So feel free to disagree with your own headcanon

@BSoD

They're all straight, you freak. Homosexuality is still properly considered a corrupt, degenerate activity in the United States of Equestria, and any ponies caught exhibiting this aberrant behavior get sent here

so there's no chance they can muddy the gene pool with their filth.

Braeburn is actually an undercover agent employed by the Equestrian government to lure out secret homosexuals so they can be summarily castrated. He's the best damn queerbaiter they've got! Do you think it's a goddamn coincidence that Caramel went from this

to this

When he moved to Appleloosa? All in a day's work for agent Brae the anti-gay!

Oh my…

I come back to visit and the thread has turned into a discussion about LGBTQ. Meh.

I suppose I've come back to worse. This is somewhat extremely relevant since my cousin that is closest to me in age just came out as a pan.

Wait! Let me make that pony related.

@Pony Sexuality
Everyone's asexual except Rarity. Everyone.

The Cakes only got together for the tax break on their business.

The Apples only hook up for the free labor their kids provide.

Spike's still a baby and doesn't really know what love is.

The comics aren't canon so we can ignore the Sombrlestia.

Hearts and Hooves Day is like Christmas is in Japan--devoid of any real meaning and just a commercialized excuse to spend money.

Rarity'll be doomed to spend her life trying to find a nice stallion only for all of them to look at her "romance" with strange looks of befuddlement.

This is a lot of gay. Now I know how some of you guys must feel when I get people to post nothing but butts for 3 pages. At least it's not as bad as the gay that I was in contact with on that MLP Zombie Role-Play that we recently finished.

Oh, by the way, we recently finished the MLP Zombie Role-Play. 1 prologue and a little over 9 long-ass chapters later and we were actually able to finish that thing. Is it super high quality? …No. Should you guys all spend time reading it? …Not even slightly! So here's a little summary of the main events for you all to enjoy!

RP starts, characters introduced… boom, zombies!
Ponyville infected due to terrorist attack!
Characters take refuge, lots and lots of gay smut… uh, woo?
Other writers plan on turning Stunt bi.
Stunt makes the grave mistake of thinking they were just joking and weren't actually going to try to make Stunt bi.
Because Blue Screen isn't writing for his own character, instead letting Stunt do it, Blue becomes a depressive pessimist with commitment issues! Hooray!
Characters found by terrorists and chased to Baltimare.
Stunthead gets bored of waiting for a main character to die and kills one already.
Jimmy's characters leave because Jimmy can't bring himself to kill them off.
Another writer gets the hint and kills off their character.
A lot of stuff happens. Including more gay smut!
Everyone starts getting irritable and distracted, both characters and writers.
Stunthead becomes cynical enough to actually use foul language! How out of character!
Stunthead zones out and when he comes back he notices that the other writers aren't as bloodthirsty as he is.
Stunthead realises that the problem with group writing is that it can go on for long enough for some people to get annoyed by the characters while other people just love them more.
Stunthead also realises he's the only one who doesn't love them more, meaning he's now the only one who wants to kill anyone off. He vents by talking about butts!
Passive aggressiveness both in and out of the story.
Jimmy's characters come back! Nobody is happy about it!
The characters are on a train to the Crystal Empire!
Jimmy's characters leave again… for the same reason as the first time…
Stunt tries to kill a character but can't. Not because he didn't want to, he just wasn't able to no matter how hard he tried.
Stunt is all like "Screw this, I'm going to make my own RP with Blackjack and Hookers!"
Jimmy's characters come back!
Everyone shouts at Jimmy for being indecisive.
Stunthead gets angry because other writers post links to gay horse porn and tell him to click it.
Stunthead installs a website blocker so that he can avoid looking at such pictures.
Intense debate about the direction of the story and general bad blood about whether the pessimistic or optimistic character is more annoying.
Happy ending in the Crystal Empire with only 2 main characters dead! I think, I didn't read the last two chapters.

Based on that, you would think that I wish that I didn't take part, right? Yeah, like I said, this RP caused me a lot of headaches, stress and lost Sunday mornings. Plus I'm almost certain that I'm a much more cynical person as a result. But I also got to know a few new users better, stretch my creative muscles and learn about my own style of writing and how it compares to other writing styles. So I'm glad I took part. Expect the Blackjack and Hookers version soon, though.

I like most of this, except for two things:

@Twilight

Whatever her orientation is (and I'd be leaning bi, because it's more fun that way), I doubt that she's asexual. Rather, I'd read her as super-duper sexually repressed. It all fits: she has a major perfectionist complex which prior to the first episode meant that she had no time for any friends at all, and she spent her whole life surrounded by people who were off limits. Basically, if she had any kind of sex drive, she'd be compelled to repress it – but that wouldn't make it go away. Basically, if she ever did shack up with someone, I'd expect it all to come rushing out in the kinkiest and most akwardest sex romp in Equestrian history.

@Vinyl and Tavi

We’ve got enough lesbians already.

YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH!

Hey all you queer lovers, check this out.

This is my new original character, DoSB (Stands for "DON'T STEAL, BRO!") He comes from Australia and is the founder of the group Ponies for the Protection of Marriage and proprietor of the website Celestiahatesfags.net

DoSB's hobbies include picketing funerals and sabotaging Macintosh computers.

So I decided to do an arrangement of the first pony song I wrote a while back for guitar and voice. Check it out

I'm unhappy with my white boi vocals, but I think the guitar work is pretty nice. I actually decided to record this on my classical guitar because it's a more flexible instrument than my steel string, and I'm afraid the local symphony orchestra is going to be sending someone over to take it into protective custody after slapping it around like that :p

Have we been talking Pony sexuality or something up there? Hard to tell through all the flags and Braeburn.

Generally I just assume all ponies are bisexual to some extent; which may not be completely justified, but in my head its justified enough.

I could cite the gender ratio being skewed as a reason, considering that even with the eventual course correction on representation of Stallions in the show there's still 3 Mares to every 2 Stallions. To the point one could begin suggesting that different family dynamics might be acceptable for the sake of allowing more to be brought together without having to have problems with a possible mate being taken.

(Mathematically that would suggest that families of 5 with the mentioned 3 mares and 2 stallions where all members are attracted to all the others would draw significantly less friction than one where Mares have to compete over stallions or stallions have to compete for mares.)

… However I'd rather cite other reasons… Such as the fact that friendships in Equestria seem to be closer than what most people do in our world in the modern day, which combined with the fact that even adult ponies seem to spend more time in same gendered groups than mixed groups would suggest… Well… Something along the lines of most ponies being more comfortable with those of the same gender as them; a situation that makes it easier to express attraction to the same sex than in other cases.

…Or… You know… Maybe its just that It's hard to imagine anybody in real life being as close as the characters are in the show without suggesting something romantic is happening… Even if its a "repressed" romantic attraction.

Think about it… How often do YOU get a hug from anybody of any gender? How much body contact was there? How long was it? How awkward did it feel? and how did it feel afterwards?

Generally, whenever I get a proper hug that DOESN'T make me feel awkward, it leaves a feeling in my chest that I'm pretty sure would turn into some kind of romantic attraction if I spend any more time with that person.

… And let's just remember how common hugs are in Equestria.

On a related note… I occasionally see some graph somewhere that basically shows off something important; or at least suggests something. And its basically just a series of circles that shows that different people in your life are a different… Erm… Distance from you. Either emotionally or literally.

On one hand, you might be comfortable with public people being as close as a meter and a half, friends as close as a meter, and people you're intimate with are basically touching you.

… Which would suggest that if two ponies are having so much more close contact than normal people have with regular friends or even what some people have when they go on a date… It kind of suggests they may be closer than just being "friends".

…And given the relative prevalence of close contact between all ponies of all genders in the show… It kind of makes the suggestion that there's not really anything unusual about having intimate contact with both genders in Equestria. Which again could suggest a nation wide normality towards bisexuality.

Then again… I might be murdering some logic here to suggest this proves anything. But it seems to me my shipper's instincts tell be that just about anypony in Equestria is just about compatible.
