You Ponyfags still talking about the thread title? You must be very bored.

Anyway, I’m going to a small Pony Con in two days and I thought that I should share this with you guys.

I’ve been working on a cosplay that I plan to wear at the convention. I think it looks pretty good, but I want to hear what you guys think of it. I’m gonna post some pictures that you may or may not find cringey. Just leave me any comments or criticism.

The ears are black, but I'm going to cover them up with purple felt. Also I'm going to cut holes in the shirt and pants.

@Disturbed

Your image doesn't appear :(

Just upload to KYM. That always works

@Crimson

in bringing this suggestion up we’re just dragging the topic back and making it go on longer

If we don't want to discuss the topic further then let this be the last post on the subject

But after seeing people predictably complain about the title, I simply needed to make my position clear. I hope you can understand

None of us were unhappy enough to demand another title or another vote, so I don’t see the point in changing the plan.

You'll notice that I didn't say that the plan has to change. I'm just reminding you all what the current plan is. The plan has been this way from the start. It's quite simple:

1. If everyone is fine with the title and don't raise a stink, then it stays :)
2. If people are still arguing by page 195, I enforce the aforementioned mandate.

So only if people are still saying 'no' to the title winner by page 195 would I then advocate anything other than our current winner

Except If TSG argues against the thread title on page 195 I will flat out disregard him because I know what he's trying to do. You wont get the better of me, TSG

But if we all would rather move on to other subjects and not discuss the title from here on, then that's the best case scenario for you. No drama = winner stays a winner. Keep saying nothing and nothing happens. Hope we can get everyone on board with that

Not to mention changing the title every 20 pages seems a little tedious and unnecessary.

Actually it isn't. It's easy enough to do. I actually thought it might be a fun way to spice the thread up some more. Doesn't need to be strictly every 20 pages though, that's just an example

@Verbose

Good good, I see you are not taking this seriously and see it as one big joke, that's good. This is improvement. I want everyone to see the thread title as the joke it is because that way we don't have people taking it too seriously, being downers about it and thus no title change debates! Great!

Nothing is to be taken seriously here. Nothing is to be grieved about, disappointed about, or debated over. There's no need for critical analysis of the situation or anything, lets just relax and play it cool! Don't worry about how important the thread title may or may not be

I don't care if the random thread title plan is a joke as it stands because it's not absolute and we can change things as we go. The random thread title plan is made to be flexible

And that's only if the thread title even goes down that route, which it wont if we just accept the new thread title and move on. Sound good?

@Thread Title Election
I say we stick to the results of the election and only use the winner. What's the point of having a Thread Title Election if there really isn't a winner? It makes the entire thing seem totally pointless.

@Disturbed:
I really like the cosplay. It's easy enough to recognize and it's not going to be cumbersome (except for the wig tangling up but that could work with the cosplay instead of hurt it). Pretty good choice for a small con if I do say so myself

>Gives up trying to watch Equestria Games
>Watches the finale.

MY SOUL IS ON FIRE!

Or… Was…

Point is, I don't care how stupid anyone SAYS the episode is… It was full of awesome!~

Everything was awesome!~

Even the stupid stuff was awesome!~

You're all awesome!~

I love you guys!~

In any case, the one thing that made me think in the finale was along the lines of "huh, so Tirek is after all pony magic? Guess Pegasi and Earth Pony magic is kind of useful".

Also note, Tirek absorbed "the magic of flight" yet never flew… Nor seemed to show any kind of extra abilities than what could be attributed to unicorns.

So either it's a "magic is magic" thing and all magic is basically able to do anything (but may be better at certain things), or its a "magic is magic, but its expression is a mark of the individual races".

…Then there's option three… "Magic is magic, but everyone uses magic differently", which would be what we'd gather if we take the fact every pony lost their cutie marks after having their magic stolen into account.

… And in that case, my constant wishes for a story where a Pegasi gets "magic" as a special talent and starts firing lightning bolts out their eyes would be plausible…

But it's more likely both Two and Three at once, but it doesn't stop me dreaming.

Still can't watch the rest of the Equestria games episode though.

Side note: I have to wonder why a being that can absorb magic doesn't try absorbing it from the earth and surroundings rather than from other beings.

I also have been wondering before watching the episode why a theoretical "Pegasi Wizard" doesn't try that either.

I mean… Equestria's very soil is probably so saturated with magic I'm surprised only unicorns are casting spells.

Extra special side note: I also made some rough calculations in how much volume a pony fills up… Assuming I didn't screw up too much, it's roughly the same amount as a human… So they're effectively the same size as us.

Full details here

Anyone that would like to take a stab at a more accurate measurement… Be my guest.

Last note: Not sure if I'm being annoying/insufferable at this point. I should probably hate myself for that.

Oh god… I just realized something weird…

If pony magic as a thing that can be absorbed or transfered is canon… Then… What if a Unicorn passes their magic onto a Pegasus?

… Let that sink in for a moment…

… Done?

Okay… Now let's take this up to eleven… What happens when an entire town of various kinds of ponies all transfer a portion of their power into a single pony?

We've already seen this basically happen with Twilight getting all the Alicorn power… But seeing this happen from a non-psudo-divine perspective would be interesting.

@Lunar
I think I may have fogotten to mention it, but I also really liked the fact that Tirek's rampage was used to explicitly show that all of the pony races have latent magic, not just the unicorns.
Silly as it sounds, the fact that earth ponies were worthy of being victims help to dispel the myth of them being 'boring' or 'ordinary.'
They do have magic, it is just a more subtle variety.

By the way,

What happens when an entire town of various kinds of ponies all transfer a portion of their power into a single pony?

Since the show has already flown head-first into DBZ territory, what you are asking about is called a Spirit Bomb, but only one pony could inspire the kind of universal loyalty and support required to pull one of those off.

Speaking of crazy action scenes, from the people who made Snowdrop, something completely different:

A little action movie cornball, but pretty cool!

And how about some AJ to finish things off?

The Con yesterday was fun. Solrac was there and he was really funny. Got to see Peter New and Kelly Metzger (voice of Spitfire) and I got their autographs. I also got a lot of complements on my cosplay. I entered the cosplay contest and didn't win (there was a lot of good cosplays so I'm not surprised). However, one of the judges said my costume was her favorite so she gave me a Rarity poster! I'd post pictures, but my camera doesn't seem to be working right now. I'll try to get the pictures and post them latter. So yeah, I met a lot of great people and had a great time.

Watch here if the embedded vid dosen't appear

I spent only a total of 3 hours to film and edit it, but took me two weeks to actually do this because of time constraints (mostly school), and since this is the first video I've ever edited, it really took me a long time to learn how to. Edited with PowerDirector 12. I don't have Adobe Premier. :/

But anyway, thanks DP! I see you in your next birthday!

All things must come to an end, dear Fifths.

Including TV shows for young girls cartoons and any irony that there once was in watching one

But our plushies will be with us always and forever

Okay serious answer: That depends on how you want to use it. If we really center everything on this fandom about a tv show, then the fandom certainly lives and dies with it. MLP:FiM is 4 years old now. There's nothing ironic left about grown men watching it at this point. If that's all we are here for then there's nothing more to do

Or we can be more self-supportive

The furry fandom isn't based around an existing TV show and it's being going for decades. What keeps it going is the ongoing creations and celebrating that which the fandom creates rather than relying on a TV network

The MLP fandom can do just the same. It still generates tons of fan creations. If the fandom centers around what it can create with the subject matter in addition to the TV show itself, it can continue to fuel itself.

I always say, less doom and gloom over the inevitable and more contributing, or supporting contributions. The question is how much of the fandom can be brought onto that mentality

However, the fandom probably won't return back the glory days of trolling the ever loving shit out of /b/. It's always going to be a niche

All this thread tells us about the health of the fandom is that the show isn't currently airing new episodes and people have to catch up on the rest of their lives that they need to catch up on.

Which is to say everyone is currently more interested in Derpibooru than thread right now. Since discussion threads are always an "on season" thing given that there's more new stuff to discuss during the time new episodes are airing.

That said… It's not like Derpibooru is infinite, so… I guess that means we all need to make more content if we can't find exactly what we want.

Except the last time I used that logic as an excuse to draw bat ponies, the thing got flooded with Bat Ponies several months later, only to become even more flooded when Flutterbat became a thing.

…I still draw bat ponies though… It's just I've been busy doing other things… Or rather failing to do other things.

…But now I find myself wanting to see more people draw half dragon ponies for some reason.

@Fifths:
I wouldn't say a small thread with 161 participants is a good example of what's happening to the rest of the fandom. Besides, the forum in general has been pretty slow the last few days. People gotta live their lives, man.

I always find the thread to be uninteresting and slow during the off seasons.

@Fifths

It should also be mentioned that the site itself has its own user ecosystem that is independent of the fandoms it intersects with. KYM Pony General is it own thing, with its own subculture and in-crowd, and is very much still tied to the first wave of bronies on the site many of which do not come to KYM much anymore but are still part of the fandom (Calpain is a good example – I actually knew him somewhat back when he was a KYMer, and still have him on my Steam friends list). There are a lot of new people who simply don't come here, possibly because this thread has existed for years and has hundreds of pages of stuff in it – I bet that would intimidate people.

Anyway, we would need a more diverse sample to properly judge the fandom's health, since this thread is unlikely to be representative.

Have some pone-ography:

@Fandom Dying
This comes up all the time and it really comes down to how you define 'dying.'
For internet fandoms, I don't really think many things can truly 'die' in the definitive sense of the word.
Look at how many beloved franchises from peoples' childhoods are still fondly remembered even years or decades after they were actually relevant.
This round of MLP is way too big to ever really die.
I'm sure it will eventually settle down into a less prominent role, but nothing that exploded this much will ever go away forever.

As for this current slow down, it is officially the break between seasons.
People have other interests and obligations and Pony isn't producing much new content at the moment so there isn't too much to talk about here.
New subjects will always crop up, but a bit of lethargy is to be expected.
Also, this community has always been pretty small (one of the reasons I like it) so a few people getting too busy to post for a few days has a significant effect on activity.
I don't think we are a very good microcosm for the fandom as a whole because plenty of other sites seem to be chugging along strong as ever.

A long-overdue crossover:

Okay, I'll reply to episode report stuff and all the rest later but now I'll answer the fandom dying stuff.

No, the Brony fandom is NOT dying, MLP is still obviously huge and even if the fandom lived and died with the show we've got at least 5 more years and that's assuming MLP G5 doesn't pick up the fandom when Friendship Is Magic finally does end. And really, others have pointed out that it DOESN'T live and die with the show itself, and a show this big will no doubt live on in nostalgia and fan stuff long after it ends.
What has mostly died is the novelty of MLP:FiM being a big thing. It's been an internet-consuming thing for years now, obviously it's not NEW AND FRESH the way it was in 2010/11. I can understand if you miss that but it doesn't mean the fandom is dead or dying.

On a sidenote, been reading through old pages due to a KYM wiki-walk type thing, saw my kissing Derpy argument, confessing my Pony costume fetish and the start of Season 4. Ah, memories… With that out of the way, I gotta sign off, it's too late and I have an exam. It's my easiest exam and it's in the afternoon but I still want to get up at a decent time, do some cleaning and revision and not be out of it when I do the exam itself. Yeah, this exam stuff has left me in an awful state…

Like BSoD said, it's going to die someday, but just look at Doctor Who and Harry Potter, they kept churning out new fans because they're much more acceptable when they first been seen by people who weren't originally into magic and/or time-travelling. But what differentiates the most is that they use humans and human-like aliens as characters, instead of adorable, colorful horses.
Some misfits may include Gundam and Doraemon, but because they're cool and adorable respectably to most of us, it easily satisfy people's needs. And you don't have to be afraid to like it.

I mean, how could you say this this isn't adorable?!

And bacause MLP was originally meant for girls, but now drowned by guys like us, some people will feel weird about it. Let this video explain:

And thus, average people don't get us. But as people slowly understand why this is happening and started to love this shit, I expect MLP is going to live for another 4~6 years

@PBSideachannel video
Great representation video, kind of funny that the creator should have an account here!

As for the fandom dying thing, I doubt it will happen for a while. Fans who stop watching the show are always going to be replaced by even more fans who discover it. I have to agree with DP on this one, MLP is too big to really ever die out.

So…taking this thread as an indicator of the health of ponydom in general, would you guys say that the fandom is starting to die?

I dunno, the Kym ponythread has always felt like that blacksheep of the family when it comes to the brony community, when the majority of the fandom is flipping out we're just sitting here going "Hey guys, the bronies are flipping their shit after the Flash Sentry Cameo. What should we do?" Hell it even feels like this thread is full of the bronies that don't even call themselves bronies anymore. This thread should probably be among the last to indicate the status of the fandom. I just think it's slow because well, we ran out of episodes to anticipate, now instead we have a hypothetical season that we don't even know anything about which is hard to get as hyped for compared to when we were getting clips of season 4.

If anything I'd just say that the fandom has changed, because all I know is when I look around at this fandom these days I know it's not the same one I joined back in 2011. But it's not dead……not yet. Just wait until they add Flash Sentry to the main cast and THEN come back here and say "Oh shit, I just got off of Equestria Daily. The Fandom is going down!!!"

@The death of the fandom (which has been greatly exaggerated)

Now would be a good time to point out that Equestria Daily is on track to hit half a billion views – the counter passed 495 a little while ago.

Also, this exists now:

And also, this thing now exists:

I should play Watchdogs.

@Fandom dying
Wouldn't be a hiatus without the mandated "the fandom's dying." From the standpoint of retention, S4 was incredibly strong--even a large majority of /mlp/ (80% in one strawpoll taken several days after the finale aired with 1000+ respondents) thought the episode was "good" or "excellent." A strong finale ensures that those who were thinking about tearing up their ticket for the ride stay put for another year. It also limits the vicious fighting that wore everyone out after Twilicorn doesn't happen.

There's always going to be some level of newfags joining the ride every year as those who are just starting their internet lives or those who have been resistant to the ride finally buckle and see what all this pony crap's about, but I don't think it'll ever be at the same levels it was at in S1, and S2--that was when most people on the interwebs became aware of it and it hit peak saturation.

So far, it looks like the number of newfags is replacing the number of people quiting the ride. Fimfiction's userbase has seen a moderate increase from it's previous upward trend since S4 started, /mlp/'s post count--when factoring in the fact moot added 30 seconds to wait time between posts and the Scruffening happened--is roughly the same, and EQD is closing in on half a billion page views all seem to back up that fact.

Regardless as to what some may want, the ride will never truly end. Even once Hasbro reboots to Gen 5, it will still be going strong. I can say this because prior to joining this ride, I was on the Lion King ride. That fandom's still pumping out fanfics, headcanons (who is Nala's father? Are the hyenas related? Is the Pridelands pre or post-humanity?) and fanart (TLKFAA) and it's been over a decade since the last official TLK media was released. The pony ride's much larger than the Lion King one was, so I know it'll will resiliently last, the only question is how many people will stick through once the band wagoners start leaving.

@drama

Speaking of band wagoners, the Tumblr SJWs have apparently decided to secede from the fandom and form their own fandom, except minus the hookers and blackjack, since hookers are oppressive toward womyn and blackjack damages children and ruins families. /mlp/'s decided to pass the hiatus by pretending this is a civil war and will hopefully begin false flag operations to infiltrate the "Equestrians" by posting porn and the like.

It's funny since no matter what Tumblr (or /mlp/ for that matter) wants, the linguistically accepted proper noun to describe an older fan of mlp is "brony." They can hashtag Equestrian all they like, it's not going to change the CNN reports or eventual Webster definition.

@TSG

Have you ever stopped to consider how much you depend on the SJWs to define yourself? The radically offensive and sexist culture on 4chan couldn't exist without a culture of PC feminist bullshit to contrast itself against; you are their photo negative, their taboos are your mores. Now they are returning the favor and defining themselves against you, and the more /mlp/ engages with this stupid campaign, the more they breathe life into it by playing the crucial part of their 'other.' All these attacks can possibly accomplish is to transform the meaning of the term 'brony' from its original connotation as a generic label for a pony fan into a term denoting the neckbearded, misogynistic counterpart of the 'Equestrian.'

I think the best thing to do would be to just ignore them.

Last edited May 29, 2014 at 10:46PM EDT

Equestrian? Well obviously they don't know shit about titling. What sounds catchier, being called the "Equestrians" or "Bronies" which is a clever combination of Bro and pony? Obviously you're going to say Bronies as well, Bronies. That's just about it right there, that's all you say.

Equestrians pfft, I guess something has to get their attention now since Down With Molestia hasn't been relevant in close to a year now.

@Equestrians

Heh, you can call yourself an Equestrian but good luck getting society to maintain two different distinctions of what is relatively the same thing. We're all mlp fans in the end, no matter what name you use. Most people wont see you any different and call you what everyone knows: mlp fans are bronies. I hope no Equestrians get too offended when they find nobody calls them 'Equestrians'.

But of course, nobody has to accept any label they do not want so by all means use whatever fandom label you prefer. I personally prefer 'pony fan'. I will also accept 'horsefucker'. But I wont get upset if I get called a brony. That's to be expected

I am absolutely fine with whiny and easily offended people wanting to break off with a whole different fandom. I will caution them however, that they will still continue to be miserable, regardless of this action

@plushies

The plushmaster has struck once again! I was walking past my bathroom and caught a glimpse of a package on my back door porch.

Fifths said:

Have you ever stopped to consider how much you depend on the SJWs to define yourself?

Considering I spend twenty minutes of my fourteen hour day on the subject of SJWs and only look up the various silly tags when I'm bored, no I don't.

The radically offensive and sexist culture on 4chan couldn’t exist without a culture of PC feminist bullshit to contrast itself against;

4chan's culture actually wouldn't exist without anime, as that was what the site was originally devoted to (/a/ was for the main topic, /b/ for everything else). "PC feminist bullshit" is a fairly recent addition to the internet at large with Tumblr and Twitter as previously it was pretty contained within the bowels of Livejournel and other blogging platforms.

You can make that argument for /pol/ and maybe even portions of /v/, but 4chan is more than what it's "reputation" is. /lit/, for example, is fairly liberal and much more accepting of the modern sociological concepts that SJWs embrace. /ck/ doesn't give a shit about any of that as their focus is on food. Then there's /lgbt/…

In other words, despite what the meme may say, 4chan's not a singular hivemind that has its entire focus on one or two things. It's a community much like any other social website that has a vast array of opinions and ideals. Even /mlp/. The thread about the "civil war" is much more silly than "offensive." Almost half the posts on it are mock "civil war letters" back home detailing soldiers bravely sacrificing their sides against the forces of tumblr. Hardly sexist or offensive. It's just one way to pass the eight month hiatus.

All these attacks can possibly accomplish is to transform the meaning of the term ‘brony’ from its original connotation as a generic label for a pony fan into a term denoting the neckbearded, misogynistic counterpart of the ‘Equestrian.’

It's far too late for that. The mass media has already christened "brony" as the proper noun to describe the fandom. Tumblr SJWs may refer to themselves as Equestrians--an improper and confusing use of a preexisting noun--but the rest of the world won't, and ultimately, it's the rest of the world that defines what words in a language mean, not Tumblr.

@Equestrians
Yeah, BSoD said all that really needs to be said.
Anyone who is going to make fun of you for being a 'brony' is going to make just as much fun of you if you call yourself an 'Equestrian.'
(Hell, they might make more fun of them for trying so hard to distance themselves.)
Everyone is free to self-identify as whatever they like, but they must realize that every one of their conversations is going to begin with:

"I like My Little Pony!"

"Oh, so you're a brony?"

"NO! I'm not a brony! I'm an Equestrian! We're the good fans."

And then they'll have to go into all the pointless distinctions that they have created to separate themselves from everyone else and little will be accomplished.
Like it or not, brony has become the standard word so they are going to find it quite difficult to create this special little 'subset but totally better' and have it gain any ground.
It would be as if a furry decided that they wanted to create a new name for themselves but they still participated in many of the same activities.
To anyone passing by, you just look like another 'furry' and they are going to apply any prejudices that they have about them whether you call yourself one or not.
If someone is really that worried about a fandom's image, they should be working to actually improve it rather than trying to simply abandon it and create a new label, though that is obviously much harder if not impossible.

(It also sounds way too much like the 'Equestricles' parody name from that Bob's Burgers episode a couple months ago…)

(Not technically relavent or true, but I just wanted an excuse to post Pony Lincoln because reasons.)
