Mario Kart General

Welp, after losing a tourney of Mario Kart 8 battling against my friends, I wondered why we didn't have a Mario Kart general in the first place. So, here it is!

Post stories, news, rage inducing moments, or just moments that stood out to you. Take from old Mario Karts or new so long as you have interesting things to share about it.

I had it preordered and it arrived the same day it was released. And I love it!

I just got 3 star rankings on all the 50CC races so I will be moving up to 100CC sooner or later.

I think what I'm most excited/scared for is what this means for Wii U sales. I can only pray that Mario Kart 8 can increase the Wii U's popularity. I'm hopeful, I haven't experienced this much buzz around a game's launch in quite a while (and I probably won't again until Smash comes out)

This and Smash Brothers will probably at the very least help the Wii U recover a lot of lost ground. It might not be able to catch up to the PS4, but I think it won't fall considerably more behind.

Though if any calls had to be made, I would make them after E3.

Also, I'm thinking that Pink Gold Peach is starting to get some popularity online, with the whole "what the hell Nintendo" attitude towards her. Maybe an entry in the future? I'm not sure of the idea myself, what do you guys think?

Although I confess, Pink Gold Peach in currently the character I use the most.

50cc, 100cc and 150cc all share the same trophies and star rankings. Thank god I started on 150cc before I found out. Only Mirror has seperate trophies and stars.

Bike+Pink Gold Peach=winning combination. I just prefer the bike's feel over the kart, and Pink Gold Peach just handles better.

Bikes like the Sport Bike or the Jet Bike have inside drifting, which can really change how you preform. Do you use those specific bikes?

For Nintendo fans who are financially able to buy the Wii U or can save up for it but haven't, I just have to say along with Random: wat r u doin?

The Wii U isn't plagued with a bad selection anymore. It has two Mario games, Pikmin, a great Zelda remade along with a new one on the way next year, big likelihood for a Metroid, Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Smash on the way, a not half-bad Sonic game with a possibly good one on the way, great LEGO games, GBA on the VC along with most likely GC soon and Earthbound already available, and loads more. A game library isn't a problem. The Wii U probably has twice as big a library as its competitors do and most of it is of excellent quality. Don't say the power in it is weak either. It may be less powerful than its competitors, it still runs 1080p very smoothly, and that's al you really need. The Wii U's big problem is the limited third party support, but do you know why support is limited? Because people aren't buying it and third-party companies don't want to bother which is why I can't play MGSV on it! So, when you think about it, you not buying the system causes it to get such little support, and the games it gets are usually poorly ported. So, if you can save for it without going into financial trouble, I highly recommend doing so.

So, about Mario Kart, I really can't wait until I get 8. I've heard many good things about it, so I'm saving right now. To curb my pain, I'm playing 7 sadly with Jimmy.

I honestly hope Nintendo releases a new Gamecube controller with a Mario Kart-based design, like the Super Smash Bros one. I know it might not happen, but imagine playing Mario Kart 8 like it was Double Dash(which I personally felt controlled quite nicely), in a way.

  • I don't like Mario games.
  • I'm not really into Pikmin.
  • I have the original, and I can't justify making a $50 purchase for updated visuals.
  • Once Zelda for the Wii U is announced, I'll preorder.
  • Don't really like Metroid.
  • Don't really like Donkey Kong.
  • Once a date for Smash Bros. for the Wii U is announced, I'll preorder.
  • I don't play most platformers (see Donkey Kong, Mario).
  • I'd consider getting a Lego game, but I don't have enough interest to look into them.
  • I have a ton of GBA games and a Game Boy SP (and DS Lite).

Earthbound is a huge sell for me, and Mario Kart is getting me there. But the Wii U is still a $300 purchase, in addition to the games I'd have to get for it. I'll easily drop that money, but I don't want to do that when there may be a price drop sometime soon and not when I'd only play 2-3 games on it. I'll revisit it when Smash Bros. and Zelda for the Wii U are announced. You get a Kirby game on there too and/or a new Fire Emblem/Advance Wars (or Beetle Adventure Racing), and that's when I'll get it.

Also, I understand that weak sales are probably pushing third-party developers away, but that was an issue before the console came out. Further, you can't make the argument that my purchase will help bring in more games. Even everyone considering a Wii U who reads this thread isn't nearly enough to get third-parties to consider making games for the Wii U. The Wii U isn't the Wii in that very casual gamers/non-gamers don't really see a need to get it, gamers don't see enough games, and Nintendo fanboys and girls like myself have either gotten it already because the games they really wanted to see are there (i.e., Mario, Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Earthbound) or they haven't because the games aren't out yet (i.e., Zelda, Kirby, Fire Emblem, Pokemon).

Back on topic, I've owned about half of the Mario Karts (i.e., 64, DS, 7, Wii), and I'll get 8 when I hear it's the best Mario Kart ever or it's legendary in its own right. I want to get a Wii U, and I can swing the price whenever. Just wanted to see if I should get it now or later based on reviews.

@Verbose

Wow! You don't like a lot of games. Well, I'm mostly talking about the people who want all these games but still refuse to get the console. Honestly, Wind Waker HD was only a sell for me because I had never played the original before, and that's more who it's made for: a newer generation who didn't get to play it. Same with the VC and GBA games.

I know convincing a few people on this thread won't help Nintendo at all really, but that's the idea. For example, if lots of the hundreds of people out there considering getting a Wii U and can't but still don't for whatever reason decided to go out and actually buy one, that definitely would help third-party devs get into it more. Like Nats said, Mario Kart and obviously Smash are going to help make the system relevant to some extent. (I seriously hope they announce a Metroid at E3 or soon. Retro is working on some mysterious project and my hopes are high. I know you don't personally like Metroid, but I love it.)

Well, back to Mario Kart as to not derail the thread too much. I'm glad they held the ridiculous powers back (cough blue shell cough) and made the game more reliant on skill. Powers are great and without them Mario Kart would be dull, but at least they stopped their ridiculousness.

Played MK8 online for the first time tonight. They've really made some improvements; most notably, there was absolutely zero lag and very low waiting times. I'm glad they kept the kart customization from 7. It really lets you choose the perfect setup.

Anyone else have a main in Mario Kart 8? I end up always playing as Pink Gold Peach or Rosalina.

My main is usually Iggy.

I barely play any of the default characters excluding Waluigi.

I played for the first time Mario Kart 8 yesterday. First item I got? The goddamn Super Horn.

I like to drive REALLY close to someone and use it. Not really the intended use, but always gives me a chuckle.

Just unlocked the Gold Tires and the Gold Standard. I have yet to get the Gold Glider since I am 7500 coins away from it.

Gold Standard is really good with Slicks, and Gold Tires are pretty fast with the inside-drifting bikes. Both parts make up for my distinct lack in weight, because I usually choose Iggy or Ludwig.

For those looking for the Gold Parts, here are the requirements:

Gold Standard: Get at least one star in all trophies (including Mirror Mode).
Gold Tires: Beat all staff ghosts in all tracks.
Gold Glider: 10,000 coins.

I really need that glider.

I'm thinking about getting this myself but my brother's been having a lot of connection issues and we don't think the problem's on our end. Is anyone else here getting frequently disconnected in the middle of races?

I don't know about in the middle of races, but during the first couple days of the game being released I've been seeing a lot of streamers get kicked out of lobbies in between races while the map is being chosen due to "connection errors". I assume it's just a hiccup in the servers that Nintendo will fix eventually.

I haven't been watching an obscene amount of MK8 streams, I have no idea what you're talking about… Stop staring at me!

I got a Wii U specifically for MK 8. So far I really like it. The visuals are awesome and everything feels really smooth. I usually go for maximum acceleration and handling, while trying to maintain a top speed of around 2 bars. This setup makes it fairly easy to recover from your own stupid errors, of which I make a lot.

Does anyone want to make a KnowYourMeme Mario Kart community?

There is, it's right here.

You have to ask CountThygen to give you the code, and I believe it runs on Saturdays only. It will be very easy fun.

On another note, get Gold Tires asap because it is one of the best wheels in the game. High speed, great traction and from what I see it has a high mini-turbo boost length. Combined with the inside-drifting it can be very efficient just using blue mini-turbos.

It makes rough courses like Bone Dry Dunes and even Rainbow Road(s) more tolerable. However it's not so good at the underwater courses, so you practically lose a lot of water traction. It's really poor in Dolphin Shoals.

@Espurr

Already exists

Mario Kart 8 seems to have magical social powers. I told all my friends that I got the game and suddenly everyone wants to come over to my house to play it. Even my stubbornly hardcore Xbox/Sony/PC Master Race friends all want to play some Mario Kart with me since I'm one of the five people in my tristate area with a Wii U.

I don't know if you already know this, Weasel, but if you're going for collecting the coins to get the gold glider a good method for that is to play a lot of local multiplayer with friends (as in all playing on the same console). The game will count everyone's coins to go towards the unlock. Pretty nifty if you ask me.

I really want a WiiU and Mario Kart 8 now after seeing the Luigi Deathstare.

Haha, I actually went out yesterday to buy it after seeing the deathstare. I would have bought it eventually, but the deathstare made me by it immediately.

After uploading some MKTV footage to my YouTube channel, I'm surprised that(through what it feels like) 3-5 minutes to upload a 60 second's worth of Mario Kart 8 footage, while I've uploaded longer videos from my PC in an average of 1-2 minutes.

I love Nintendo, but their upload/download speeds suck. Try downloading things from the eshop, it takes ages.

I've tried more variety in this game, but my main is probablly Baby Mario.

I also like Toad, my Mii and Ludwig.

I've downloaded enough eShop titles to know what it feels like.
