My theory is based on personal witness.
Most memes that die out early are mostly memes based on current events/political events.
Sure things are relevant at the time but once the issue goes off out of the lime light people just forget. Mainly forced meme's imo.
It is interesting to see the life span of certain memes but plain and simply, they just aren't funny any more. But thats the reality.
Specific old memes hold their weight because they are actualy funny/witty and can be applied to most situations or general population can just relate to it.
This is what Facebooker's like to use but behind the vail of shittyness they are pretty good. But at the same time, I have unfriended people for using shit memes. lol.
Obscure memes also can have longivity due to their fanbase.
This is quite a broad subject and I am also interested in other user's opinions on this.
Also I will touch on is that just some memes get "beat the hell out of".
What was once funny just loses it's appeal when it is constantly shoved down your throat.
I'm sure there are other reasons but thats all i got. :D

you use your brain to think about how a meme dies out, obviously

You have some truth to this only because "does a meme die out in your mind?"
What's socially acceptable does not really apply to how funny something is.
