I'm sorry, but this is the first NationRP I've been in, so that means what; 20th century, 21st century?

The Information Era (generally) covers the late 20th century up to the present.

Also, what in-game time period are we starting from? or are we starting from present?

We were planning on explaining the period and setting when we post the first "Turn", but rest assured that the setting is little more than "present".

*except BSOD who gets to start with stone age tech for his great performance against Angmar and Vascony

Still got like 5 hours.

Nation RP games are difficult to manage. They take as much time as they need.

I just hope we can have a game that finishes before the GM gets tired and for once have a last man standing situation.

To be fair, a last man standing situation isn't fun at all. I'd rather get a new game running sooner and declare a few victors than keep a stale game running long past its expiration date. That's why I ended my last game and hoped that MDF would start this one; most players were either defeated and removed from the game, or had been cornered into an untenable situation. Most of my threads only last about 20 turns because things get to be so difficult to put together after so many turns that I've given up. What needs to be done, is for me to engineer a game that either isn't a nightmare to write near the end so that it lasts long enough to have a satisfying conclusion, or which has events move along fast enough that a conclusion can be reached within 20 turns. I'm thinking I could limit turn sizes significantly so that turns are short and sweet, easy to write. Either that, or a clear goal can be announced so that players know what to strive for and can work towards reaching that goal quickly, before anybody else.

A limit on turn sizes sounds reasonable.

I recall in the last game that the size of turns seemed directly proportional to the gap between updates. Early in the game I was making about 6 actions per turn and the update was the next day. However the size of turns seemed to naturally increase as the game got older too. By the end I was making about 30 actions

From the players perspective: you have to make bigger and bigger turns over time. In the late game, people get trickier and require more actions to maneuver around. Also with bigger nations with new technologies; you have to utilise more actions to cover all your bases.

I suppose that even as the player count slowly dwindled as players were eliminated one-by-one; The remaining players made their turns bigger and more complex so the game still got progressively harder for the GM.

I suspect that's a consequence of the current "unlimited resource" state of things and giving the GM more control over player turn sizes will help alleviate that effect. I wondered if you could control the size of player turns by making them dependant on a resource you must acquire in game first:

EG: You can only do a certain number of actions (per turn) initially but in order to make more actions than the default; you must conquer and control more regions on the map or you have to control certain "resource nodes" on the map.

(NOTE: I'm not advocating this for the current game. This game already has a method of handling turn size. The mechanics for this game are in place and do not need to be changed)

That is exactly what I was thinking. My idea was that, in a nations RP that I was planning (but didn't initiate to be fair to MDF and also cuz I'm being a lazy bastard as of late) that a player would have, say, three actions per turn for each colony or region or supply center they controlled. Something along those lines. By limiting the number of open colonies/regions/supplies, it would put a cap on the size of each turn. And it would make sense, too. Logically, one is forced to deal with more stuff when they have more places to deal with stuff in, but because of the way it works, you would only get to make larger turns by robbing other players of their turn size, thus keeping the game at a manageable size.

(NOTE: I too, am not telling MDF what to do. I am only pondering for my own future games.)

I apologize for anyone who was bamboozled by the lack of Game starting, MDF has been absentee and he has the maps required.

@Ermac: Your position was selected randomly, I'm afraid.

@BSoD: There is a mechanic vaguely similar to that in the form of the Stability factor. Low stability has the chance of cancelling an action(s), whereas a high stability returns to the reasonably-unlimited status. Stability is affected also by the ratio of cities to territory.
This was not explained because I'm a proponent of Playerside Rationality.

Apologies compadres. My laptop has spontaneously combusted. I've been trying to extract my files off it so I can get the map up and running for the past few days.
This has kind of thrown a wrench in proceedings. Either Cale can make a map or I'll keep trying. Sorry about this.

That's OK brah. Bad things happen to everyone.

Dayum. Bad luck man.

Happens to us all

You could say that it's the CURSE OF KYMnatRP in action.

Edit: I'm referring to how something always seems to screw up turn schedule in every game.

Oh I so know that feel.

@Coolface

We have to wait for MDF to start the game. But he's having technical issues for now.

When we start, your neighbors are Douglas, and Vlad to your north and Robotnik to your west

Douglas and Vlad are experienced players and will likely kick your ass. Go after Robotnik first.

Pfft, yeah right, you just want Coolface to attack me so we'll both be weakened and you (who is directly south of us) can take Coolface and I down quickly and easily.

I guess I have been doing this for a while.

After reviewing my previous post, I realize that I may have jumped to conclusions about the advice BSoD was trying to offer. If I offended you by jumping to the wrong conclusions, BSoD, then I'm sorry. If I was right, then I was right, but I'm still sorry for jumping to conclusions so quickly.

I also realize that the way in which I responded to BSoD may have sounded like I was disregarding the experience of the players surrounding Coolface and I (Vlad, Douglas, and BSoD). Know that I am aware that all three of you are experienced players, and that I had no intentions of implying otherwise, and if I came off as arrogant, then I apologize as well.

But know this, any nation who reads my post: I will not underestimate any of the nations participating in this RP, nor will I allow myself to be underestimated. I've analyzed previous KYM Nation RP's, and I will not allow myself to be trampled over like some weak NPC. I am the Eggman Empire, and I will succeed!!!

Succeed in what, you may ask?

Why, conquering the world of course!!!

(But I really am sorry.)

I want to try make a lot of trade routes and build a hefty economy so im going to try and be as neutral as possible for as long as I can. Until im forced otherwise

@Robotnik

No need to apologize, I was just kidding.

I doubt Coolface will listen to me. Even if he does, attacking on the first turn is not wise.

If you watched the last Nation RP; we had a new player attempt to attack Vlad right at the beginning. It didn't turn out well for him.

I changed my mind because I don't want to steal MDF and Cale's thunder. The longer the wait is then the less enthusiasm there will be for the beginning of the game, but I'm not doing anything until I get an official response from one of them on the fate of this thread. I know they were looking forward to this, and there's been a lot of planning put into it, I am sure. I don't want to ruin anything, even with popular support.

I'll give MDF one more chance. He must be having more trouble than anticipated retrieving his lost data or hes busy trying to remake everything from scratch.

But he really needs to chime in here and give us a progress report.

Well, guys.

It's been 12 days since we've received an update from MDF, and Cale's account was deactivated no less than 10 minutes ago.

I must say, the outcome of this NationRP looks bleak.

MDF's computer broke, and I can't draw maps, so it's dead in the water. Syndic came into chat the other day and asked how it was doing, so there's that.

Also look at what you'll be missing out on.

Look at that shit go.
