how to forget a bad memory? I have a problem with bad memories that keep coming back and it is driving me insane. I have a problem forgetting unpleasant things, it makes me want to wash my brain with acid. does any have any suggestions? I have been trying different things but nothing worked 100%, sometimes bad memories go away on their own but sometimes they come back and continue to stay in my mind as a mental image. and i have to admit in some cases it was my own fault that those memories got lodged in my brain. does anyone know any methods that can help deal with bad memories? any help will be appreciated.

Unfortunately our brains are not wired to forget things so easily.

And if ya did, I'd see a doctor about it, lol. Best you can do is learn to cope with the bad memories as much as possible. I suppose one way would be to just keep yourself occupied with other things so you won't have time to think about such bad memories. Try to avoid things and/or situations that might trigger those memories from bubbling up.

Anything else? Well that depends on the memories involved I suppose.

There is a problem that the triggers to those memories are things that i may see and find in many places and quite easily.
One thing i try to do to forget something is by simply doing other things to keep me occupied and eventually forget something, or hope that something else will overwhelm my mind in such a way that the bad memories will be so small that they will be a blurry or get suppressed.

True, but at the same time you shouldn't run from those bad memories (despite my earlier advice :P).

I suppose one way would be to try and analyze those memories from a 3rd person perspective -- inasmuch as you are apart of those memories you can also try to look at them objectively with a rather dispassionate observational "FOR SCIENCE!" mentality. Where did things go wrong? What could have I done to make things better? Would it have made things better? And so on.

Its something I used to come to terms with what happened with me earlier in life. Would it work for you? Hard to say, but at the very least you are not alone, and while I or anybody else might not 100% understand your bad memories there are enough people out there willing to try and understand.

Keep calm and carry on! :)

alcohol, replace it with a different notable memory, suppression via escapism is decent enough sometimes
we intrinsically remember notable events, so drown it out with any method you like
