While I personally am very doubtful that he will actually die in the film, much of the internet reacted to his crash in the first Cars 3 trailer as if he really had died.

There are a few other posts floating around about his supposed death. Thankfully the origin on this one is very easy to pin down where it first cam about. Online spread might be a bit more difficult however.

I'm assuming this is just a meme thing since the synopsis in that video makes it quite clear that the crash happens near the beginning of the movie to serve as the motivating plot element for his "return."

Don't forget about Forklifts, Skateboards, Drills, Bikes, Rockets, Pineapples, Guns, Sodas, Tanks, Turrets, Flamethrowers, Tricycles, Lawnmowers, Tractors, and Motorcycles.

I would actually be somewhat impressed if they actually killed him.

And Mawile, don't front, we would all rush to see an animated movie about anthropomorphic weapons.

Pretty much, yes. about 70% certain movie is (1) Race (2) Crash (3) never race again (4) new competition (5) I decide when I stop racing (6) 80's training montage (7) race again (8) win to to prove u really are da best.

The point is rather the Internet's reaction to the trailer. The joke is that it looked like Lightning McQueen died, (even if he didn't really die in the trailer) and people ran with it.
