Guys, got any really depressing animes you'd recommend? I can't remember the last time an anime gave me a good cry. Been watching some Anohana recently, but it didn't really do much.

If you don't mind horror, Another and Higurashi are great, but otherwise, I'd definitely check out Psycho-Pass.

Anywho, I couldn't post it yesterday, but here's my conclusion for Humanity Has Declined Episode 2:
Another really funny episode, the skinned chickens were the best part, I'm really enjoying the show so far, can't wait for next week.

What mechs did you get? also. I think its funny you are worried about your dad seeing mechs considering the figures I have.

it's kinada not the figures themselves but the fact that a package is from japan, and maybe the whole "aren't you a little bit too old for this?" thing. but yeah, the most 'revealing' figure i own is the nanako nendo petit, so i guess i don't know how my partens would react to …
as for the figures, i bought revoltech lazengann, gurren lagann and tengen toppa gurren lagann by auction and bandai EVA-02 in it's beastform (that one just looked better to me than the revoltech on, although it doesn't have a ll the nice blood splatter effects etc.). i'm tempted to buy a regular unit 01 or 02, but i can't decide if i want the 'old type' (like, they had broader shoulders and thinner waists) or the 'new type' (with shoulders and waists about the same width).
did i mention that i want enki really bad?
but they're sold out everywhere or from china, and i don't trust this whole "there are no revoltech bootlegs" myth…

has anyone else seen the stardust crusaders OVA? i've watched it not so long ago and now the TV show's episodes feel really weird. like, there's more details, but there's less stuff happening per episode.
i didn't read the maga yet btw, therefore i feel like there's a lack of ship stands and orang-utans in the TV show…
but at least joseph isn't blonde lol

I hate to make three posts in such a short space of time, but I felt this was necessary. As of this post, I've started watching both Madoka Magica and Evangelion. I must say, while Evangelion is not bad by any means, I'm having a really hard time getting invested in it. I'll probably finish it eventually, but I don't think I can watch it at the present. I hope this is just a thing at the beginning, and that it improves later on, because I want to like it. Madoka on the other hand, I'm really enjoying. I'll probably finish it off today, and then watch the third movie. I'd still take Psycho-Pass over both of them though.

@itaboo

I re-watched the first episode of the OVA after watching the first episode of the 2014 Stardust Crusaders and I honestly prefer the older version. Although the OVA clearly didn't have the budget for visual effects, It portrays its suspense better and has less "anime moments".

No sudden close-ups of every single characters face in shock.
No main characters somehow having more authority than people of authority (when Jonathan tells the police officers to shut up they're afraid of him, even though they have no idea of who he is, what he's capable of and the fact that they're police officers in a police station. Whereas the OVA version has the police step back in fear, rather than by being told to).
No loud and obnoxious characters that narrate every detail of the scene when we can clearly see what's going on.
Jotaro's mother is actually a concerned parent instead of a cutesy moe blob that accepts any bull.

Since I haven't read the manga, I can't comment on how accurate Jotaro's attitude is in comparison to the source material, but I do also prefer the OVA's strong and silent over the TV's back-alley street punk. The only thing I like from the 2014 remake is the visuals alone. But watching a show for visuals alone is, personally speaking, like buying a manga for the paper quality.

That's 4 posts in such a short space of time. Sigh.
Anywho, I just watched episode 3 of Mekakucity Actors, and I must say, I found it infinitely more interesting than episode 2. If the next episodes are more like this one, I can see myself enjoying the series a lot more

@mekakucity actors

I liked this episode, Kido turned out to be a very nice character. Damn is so hard to pick a favorite.

Also, according to Hummingbird, "Mekakucity Actors" and "Nanana's Buried Treasure" have only 11 episodes. I can't believe how short they are… is kinda depressing.

That's the hard thing about me watching 11 shows, it's harder to say goodbye. I know that both Captain Earth and Haikyuu go for two seasons, so that's one thing, but I hope The World Is Still Beautiful does too, it's really the best thing on at the moment.

Oh yeah, episode two was really funny. I am really liking this show. The skinned chicken scene was hilarious.

Captain earth has about 25 episodes, though the story goes a little bit slow. I have great expectations with this anime, lets see what happens.

Also, relevant:

lol, that part

I'm going to take a look on "The World Is Still Beautiful", you said it so many times that now I just have to see it.

@Humanity has declined

I wasn't expecting the chickens at the end.

Fun fact: the OP is made by the same band that made the OP for Sankarea. Is great to hear the same band in two different animes, is somewhat nostalgic.

Here's my advice for any series you watch based on extreme praise: Go into it with tainted expectations. I always find shows you go into with high expectations you end up being the most disappointed with. A problem for The World is Still Beautiful is that the male lead isn't that good, but it's made up by the badass female lead. One of my main fears with recommending shows is that I over hype them too much and cause people to hate them instead. Oh, I officially recommend a Belly Button forte as a cure for depression. Tried and tested.
And funny you should mention the recognising the theme song for HhD, I actually recognised the ending as being by the same person who did the ending to Azumanga Daioh.

If you havent seen Grave of the Fireflies yet you'll be feeling pretty suicidal afterwards, or Bokurano if your into mecha stuff, try Narutaru as well, its by the same person. Texhnolyze is depressing, and so is Lain, but i felt the ending for that one was more bittersweet. Also the Berserk anime ends at the worst possible part of the manga. try out Wolfs Rain as well

It works 4/5 times for me. Almost all the series I have seen by recommendation were great, it doesn't change the fact that there are animes I just simply don't like.

I try to watch as much as possible in the time I have. I still have another three or four years in which I can enjoy all this; after that, I doubt having the time to watch anime or any other show.

I always find shows you go into with high expectations you end up being the most disappointed with.

Shit happens. It happened to me with "Vividred Operation" and depicting the fact that it sucked, I liked a few things.

One of my main fears with recommending shows is that I over hype them too much and cause people to hate them instead.

That kind of people deserves to be kicked by a horse. I mean, if you like an anime so much is obvious you want to share it with others.

I think is great to show enthusiasm over something you like and sharing it in the same way.

Oh, I officially recommend a Belly Button forte as a cure for depression. Tried and tested.

Yeah, JJ abrams is directing it.

So, this season I've started No Game No Life, Chaika the Coffin Princess, Nanana's Buried Treasure, and Black Bullet.
To my surprise, Nanana is actually my favorite so far.
Also, Tensai is my waifu.

Just look at that pose that so clearly shouts, OBJECTION!

Black Bullet is good. The whole city divide thing with the big transparent wall thing and the Cursed Children reminds me of Darker Than Black.

Chaika isn't what I expected, but it's still worth watching. I expected a story about how a soldier is trying to find meaning in his life after the end of a war, but it's more like a soldier trying to start another war because why not.

No Game No Life is rather hilarious, especially how the MC somehow turned Chess into a galge.

Nanana is pretty good actually and clearly one of the best ones this season. Is sad it has only 11 episodes.

Tensai is a really good character, she is not afraid of what people says about her and she is confident in her goals and ambitions. Something that is pretty weird in a anime character nowadays, I think.

Waifu indeed.

BUT…

ENJU WAIFU MASTER RACE

Last edited Apr 28, 2014 at 11:46PM EDT

Actually on that^ note, Crunchyroll seems to think 2014 is the year of the loli. I mean we had Lady Venera last season. Now we have Enju and Shiro this season, and I'm probably missing more from shows I haven't seen.

Don't get me wrong, Brynhildr is not really good, but I do like the story. The worst show this season is Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei/An Irregular At Magic High by FAR, it is complete shit. Gouchuumon wa Usagi Desu ka/ Is The Order A Rabbit is pretty harmless, but not my type of show. At risk of sounding like a broken record, Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii/The World Is Still Beautiful is the best goddamn thing on (Besides Mushishi, but that's a given). If you watch anything else though, you can't go too far wrong with Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou/The Kawai Complex Guide To Manors And Hostel Behaviour, Isshuukan Friends/One Week Friends and Captain Earth

I agree with your opinion on Brynhildr, it isn't that good but it's interesting enough to keep watching. Although I don't really expect something from that anime.

I still need to watch Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou, I read it's fantastic. The art looks pretty good too.

I know that we have a bit of an unspoken rule about discussing "past anime" here, but I just found this and damn near pissed myself laughing at it.

This shit is glorious. Someone start making gifs, stat.

OMG Kawai Complex is hilarious, if The World is Still Beautiful didn't exist it would be my favourite by far. It looks fantastic too, it's just an all around great show.
And for Brynhildr, the moment I heard it was from the guy who did Elfen Lied, I knew that while it wouldn't be good, I just had to check it out. The op is cool though

Just got done reading the latest Akame Ga Kiru. That manga literally raises my heart beat each time I read it because its so intense and I am genuinely scared for the characters. I really do like that manga. Cant wait for the anime.

Kind of late, but I really liked this weeks Meduka meguka city actors, it was much more interesting than last weeks.

I was actually kind of disappointed in the last two episodes of Black Bullet, because the pacing went from good to WAY TOO FUCKING FAST. I felt like they just wanted to get this entire first arc just entirely out of the way for some reason. None of the fights lasted longer than 2 minutes, and there was just a constant barrage of plot without really giving us a chance to take in what we just heard. I might have to take my chances and see if I can obtain the light novel if this keeps up.

Also I really liked Kagetane as a villain and he's already (presumably) dead.

I didn't find as amazing but whoever combined the scenes and audio did a good job.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Yeah, I thought Kagetane was going to be the final villain but noooooooooooooooo.

As for the fights, yeah you are right. Way too fucking fast.

Poor Kayo tho.

I saw episodes 6 & 7 ¿Why is Uzu there?

Last edited May 01, 2014 at 08:35PM EDT

@Mekakucity
So I only kinda understood what happened this week. Kinda confusing pacing, I had to look up what happened, which isn't a good sign. Great otherwise

@Humanity Has Declined
Another great episode, probably the best so far. If there's any revolution I wish to be a part of, it's certainly the Boys-Love one.

And now is time for the weekly 'you guys totally need to watch The World Is Still Beautiful'. This week however come coupled with a recommendation for Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou/Kawai Complex, which was amazing this week, and is the only other show on that rivals TWiSB (Except Mushishi, which naturally wins by default)

Also this week, I watched Angel Beats! The ending killed me emotionally, I'm not ashamed to admit I bawled like a little girl at it. Also, I find it ironic that the show heralded by many for it's moe characters has more homosexual overtones than this week's episode of Humanity has Declined

I know that feel. There is no way back after watching that ending. It is sad but in a good way, you like the characters so much that it hurts to see them go…brb emotional breakdown.

So out of curiosity I decided to scope out the dub of Attack on Titan they're showing on adult swim Toonami, and my god is it bad. Everything seems off slightly. It's like they tried to Americanize it ever so slightly and completely knocked off the tone.

Is this a common problem with dubs? I mean, I figured something like Attack on Titan wouldn't suffer that much from language and culture shift because of its setting, but it just did. What happened?

That is a complaint I've heard launched against some dubs, yes. I don't think it's the biggest complaint people have with bad dubs, but it does get mentioned. I haven't had this problem with most dubs I've watched, but I also have probably watched more subbed than dubbed at this moment, so maybe I haven't been exposed enough.

Out of curiosity, did you watch Attack on Titan in Japanese before you checked out the dub? I find that when I go to watch a show dubbed that I previously watched subbed, it sounds weird to me at first, even if it's a decent dub. For example, I found it hard to watch Black Lagoon dubbed at first, but it grew on me after a while. The inverse can happen, as I find the Japanese version of Baccano! off for me.

It also could just be a bad dub. I haven't checked out the dub for Titan yet, so I can't say for certain, but it would really suck if Funimation did a poor job on Titan considering its popularity in the west.

Man, I've had so little time to watch anything recently. Calculus is a bitch.

Angel Beats was indeed a great show, but I felt it didn't really have much of an impact because I wasn't really attached to any characters. Also, that last plot twist seemed to come out of nowhere. Feels like the writers decided to put it in just so that the viewers would cry their eyes out. I'd still rate it a 7.5/10, though.

Are you sure you have a heart?

As a member of the "Anime Club" I want to propose the addition of "Captain Earth" to our weekly review.

Well I didn't cry after finishing Anohana either – though it did leave me pretty depressed – so I guess I am sorta heartless. Gonna move on to CLANNAD next, as Dac suggested. Kinda iffy about the whole romance thing, so I'll see if it holds up for me. As for Another and Higurashi, I was too busy enjoying I mean focusing on all of the blood and gore to be depressed.

Loli wrote:

I'm pretty sure I don't have a heart. The only times anime have made me physically shed a tear is

When Ace died and then Luffy got depressed about it, but then remembered that he still has his nakama. The part where he realizes he still has his friends somewhere in the world and he's not alone, even without Ace was what did it for me.

Also,
When Frieza killed Vegeta. Death is cheap in DBZ, but the part that was tear jerking was the fact that before he died, Vegeta threw away his pride (which is like his entire existence) and basically said only Goku can become a Super Saiyan and kill Frieza. He pretty much just gave his dream to someone else.

The fact that the saddest scenes I can think of are from the most Shonen series ever is weird to me too, but I think it's because whenever a more serious type of anime kills someone off, I'm far too surprised to be sad, such as in Death Note or Code Geass. Things like Angel Beats have given me feels, but no real tears.
Last edited May 05, 2014 at 10:35PM EDT

Actually, it makes sense that long-running shonen shows would be able to invoke a lot of feelings in people. Since these shows often go on for a long time, it's nigh impossible to not grow attached to the characters since you've been following them from the start. Thus, the series can offer a great amount of emotional impact when hardships befall the characters you've grown to love over countless hours. In contrast, shorter shows such as Angel Beats and Anohana try to go for a short but sweet type of thing, so it can be harder to get attached to the characters for some people. The upside to these shorter shows is that they can focus exclusively on the emotional aspect, as this aspect is seen more sporadically in long-running shonen. I guess it depends on your preference. Do you like shorter shows that use all their time in building an emotional roller-coaster, or do you prefer a longer show that impacts you through the attachment you develop for the characters?

Just doing my weekly job at reminding you all to watch The World is Still Beautiful (and Kawai Complex). Oh, and since Anime Club is just about dead, I'm gonna watch Humanity has Declined on my own terms. You guys should still watch it though, considering how great it is.

Just started watching the World is Still Beautiful, its pretty good, Kawai Complex and Captain Earth are definitely my favorites for this season. Humanity has Declined is okay.

Humanity Has Declined's humour really matches mine, I'm also very cynical. The World Is Still Beautiful and Kawai Complex are my favourites by far, (besides Mushishi, which wins by default) but I'm also enjoying One Week Friends and Captain Earth too. Mekakucity Actors and Ping Pong have grown on me a lot, and I'm also really enjoying Haikyuu, Baby Steps, and Tonari no Seki-Kun (the latter of which was my fave from last season). Soul Eater NOT is NOT good, and neither is Brynhildr, and are both the joint winners of the "Recently, My Sister is Only Watching This Show Ironically" Award ©. The shows I tried to watch but didn't like were Black Bullet and No Game, No Life. An Irregular At Magic High/ Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei is the worst show this season, and the only show I put on shit-tier.
And that's all the shows I'm watching this season.

Last edited May 11, 2014 at 11:41AM EDT

First time posting in this thread, or a thread in general, and I want to say this season is pretty damn god tier. Just this season alone, I'm watching Akuma no Riddle (yes to yuri danganronpa), Black Bullet, Blade and Soul, Brynhildr in the Darkness, Captain Earth, Chaika: The Coffin Princess (dat loli), Date a Live 2 (gotta love generic ecchi harems, right?)

Escha & Logy no Atelier: Tasogare no Sora no Renkinjutsushi, Fairy Tail 2, Fuuun Ishin Dai Shogun, Isshuukan Friends, Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara (even moar generic ecchi harem), Kenzen Robo Daimidaler (this show is completely retarded but in a way that makes it amazing), M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane, Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to, Mekaku City Actors, No Game No Life, Seikoku no Dragonar(at least it has a dragon loli) Selector Infected WIXOSS (tons of people in another thread seem to love this, but I don't really feel it). Sidonia no Kishi, Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii, Soul Eater Not, The Irregular at Magic High School, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, Nisekoi and Nobunaga the Fool from the previous season.

This season, I feel that Sidonia no Kishi is tied for best anime this season, of course tied with Stardust Crusaders. I can understand why some may not like it because of the CGI, but the atmosphere makes quite refreshing and different from the anime in the past few years. The story may not be wholly original, but I feel that it executed quite well.
