When did you first figure out that Game of Thrones maybe wasn't going to be a happy, rip-snortin good time and everybody would get along?

Probably around the time Joffrey started to act like a royal duke of douche-baggery, so pretty early on.

Agreed. This is generally considered to be the "holy shit" moment for GoT.
However I was always thinking that things would get better. This however, changed with the end of Dance of Dragons.
To be honest, I haven't even watched the show and I already know the vibes that it gives off.
It's so strong in fact that it's one of the reasons I haven't watched it yet; I'm afraid that I'll grow so jaded that I'll just stop caring about everyone.

You wouldn't be alone on that thought dude. Several readers and viewers alike have reported feeling apathetic as the story goes on.
If you start with an already-high threshold of horrifying content, then it's hard to increase the threshold and readers can become kind of disaffected. This is amplified by the sheer size of ASOIAF, because it's got that much more risk of settling into a lull, so the base stuff has to happen with regularity to keep the people who are watching for violence rather than the politics/characters/story interested.

I for one love the politics/characters/story I for one think its a beautiful analysis of human nature and power but their are people out their who only see the violence/SCP/cynicism in it.
But i knew the kinda story i was in for when i read it.
I'd have to say the end of episode one. Affairs, check. Insestial affairs, check. Attempted child murder, checkerino.
