Korn's the band that basically helped define early nu-metal with their heavy focus on dark themes, low tuned guitars and bass, and occasionally rapped vocals. Around the mid-00s the band tried to go more in the direction of industrial influenced alt metal, and at one point even attempted a dubstep influenced album that had assistance from the likes of Skrillex and Noisia. Around the time their original original guitarist Brian "Head" Welch returned in 2013 (he left in the mid-00s, needing time away from the band to get clean off drugs) they went back to their nu-metal roots. Their latest album, The Serenity of Suffering, has been one of the band's most well received albums since Untouchables back in 2002.

They started off very well; their first several albums would land them into becoming possibly the biggest of the big 4. Their sounds ranged from a jarring, more traditional thrash metal near the beginning to a much more complex, melodic sound as time went on. Then their bassist died in a tour bus crash… okay, that shook things up a bit, but they still went on. Come the 90's, after the release of the Black Album; they've basically completely changed their image. Their sound, their style, and even their physical appearance had become more "alt." Their next three studio albums (Load, Reload, and especially St. Anger) became, to this day, possibly their most hated albums. Then, with the releases of Death Magnetic in 2008 and Hardwired… to Self Destruct just last year being far more praised, most fans would probably say that they went back to their old style for the better.
