GIFs for ants

In the current gallery system, GIF thumbnails always animate, a la tumblr dashboards. This slows down the rendering of more images, and on my old, rickety previous computer, would sometimes freeze the whole browser. It would be very helpful if there was an option not to play GIFs until you click on them the way 4chan and danbooru do. Browser add-ons do work, but native options are always nice.

Also, wouldn't it be easier on the server itself if all the thumbnails were just converted into JPEGs before being dished out in the galleries?

Tbh I prefer them to be GIFs because stale images often appear odd and won't allow you to get the joke until after you saw the full GIF.

But I can see how this can be painful for old and slow computers.

Should something be implanted, I would suggest it to have a semi-transparent overlay reading "GIF" to make viewers aware it's a GIF we're dealing with, looking like the scissors thing used to cut off long images when browsing the site by phone.

We'd want to have either have a semi-transparent overlay indicating a gif, or just display all the filenames themselves beneath the images so people can see the ".jpg" or the ".gif".

KYM filenames are random combinations of a few letters and numbers. Not something to display just to show ".jpg", ".png" or ".gif".

All files uploaded to 4chan have two filenames: one is the display filename, which is defined by whatever the file was named on the uploader's drive and is displayed above the image as a hyperlink to the direct URL, and the CDN filename, which is the random combination of digits that are the actual filename of the instance of the file on the server. (If you download an image from 4chan, the filename of the file you download will be the CDN filename. This is a bit of hassle when you're downloading from a thread whose entire point is silly or ironic filenames, but that's not really relevant.)

What I had in mind was displaying the now-conveniently-mandatory image title above or below the thumbnail, with the filename extension appended, even if no instance of the file itself is actually named that.

I wouldn't mind this so long as it were optional and not a permanent feature of the site. It's good for those who have a slow connection or potato computer, but it'd be a big pain to have to click on every picture just to see if it's a gif--especially since you can't tell what type of file it is straight from the image gallery like you can with 4chan.

Adding a giant transparent "GIF" or "JPEG" to the thumbnail would be even worse as it would greatly obscure the actual image and only require people to click on it even more. Not to mention the possible coding pains/server strain it would create.

As I mentioned above, converting all thumbnails into jpegs would actually decrease server strain, since the server dishes out a lot of thumbnails. It would also free up drive space on the server, because the server already does store the thumbnails as separate files instead of just displaying the image itself in miniature.
