Is EV training a must have thing to play online?

How exactly does EV training work?

Basically EVs are a separate hidden stat that boosts a pokemon's actual stats. You get them by battling pokemon similar to EXP. Each pokemon has a different EV yield, some give 1HP EV, some give 2ATK EVs etc. EV training is basically fighting the right pokemon until you get the EVs you want. To make it easier, Pokerus doubles the EVs you get when you fight a pokemon and Power Items increase them even further, and it's recommended you don't try to EV train without them. The best part is you can EV train your whole team at once.

In SM, you can easily fully EV train a pokemon by using SOS battles, as each ally actually gives more EVs than the last, meaning if you have pokerus and a Power Item, you can max out a stat with just 7 KOs. Power Items can be bought with BP, and pokerus is a random encounter with a rate of finding a Shiny, but it spreads throughout your team when you battle so people trade away pokerus all the time. Ask here and you can probably find someone who will give it to you.

You max out EVs at 510 total and 252 per stat, so the most common spread is to put 252 into two stats and 4 into another.

If I have a level 60 pokemon is it too late for me?

Yes and no. If you went through the game with that pokemon, it's guaranteed to have maxed out it's EVs. However, there are certain berries that can lower the EVs of a pokemon to reset them. You can find them (or trade for them) then use Poke Pelago to grow them easily. I have about 300 of each right now preparing myself for when I will start breeding. Each berry lowers EVs by 10 so you will probably need 10-25 of each in order to reset your EVs. A bit time consuming if you are starting from scratch, but once you get the supplies, it becomes very easy.

Is EV training a must have thing to play online?

Again, yes and no. Against people who breed for the right IVs and Nature, and perfect their EV spread, your pokemon are going to pale in comparison to theirs. It doesn't make them unbeatable, an improper Water-type can easily kill a proper Fire-type easily if the opponent doesn't switch. I would go into online play and see how you do, if your pokemon seem to not be able to kill anything, EV training might be necessary, although unless your pokemon is Hyper Trained and has the right Nature, it still won't completely match others.

EV training, once you have Pokerus and the Power Items, plus know where to EV train at, takes little time (In ORAS, it took 20 minutes to EV train 4 mon to full, and I hear SM is even faster) IV breeding is what takes some time, but that's a whole other can of worms entirely. Given the nature of your question, I'm assuming you want to go online with your story pokemon. EVs give you more than IVs, and your strategy will always matter more, so if you do decide to EV train your pokemon, you won't exactly be on an even playing field with everyone, but you should be able to battle them with a chance of victory.

To put it into numbers, I'll use Primarina.at level 50.

With no EVs and IVs and a neutral nature Primarina's stats are 140 – 79 – 79 -131 – 121 – 65
With no EVs and perfect IVs and a neutral nature, it's stats are 155 – 94 – 94 – 146 – 136 – 80

This tells you how much IVs affect your stats.

With half IVs and evenly spread EVs with a neutral nature you get 158 – 97 – 97 – 149 -139 – 83

This is an approximation of what you get with a story mon without resetting EVs

With half IVs, neutral nature, but with 252 SpAtk EVs and 252 HPs, you get 179 – 86- 86 – 170 – 128 – 72

This is what you would get if you reset the EVs and properly EV trained your story mon

With perfect IVs, a Modest Nature, 252 SpAtk EVs, 44 Spd EVs and 212 HP EVs you get 182 – 84 – 94 – 195 – 136 – 86

This is what you are likely to go up against, someone who has bred a perfect Popplio and perfectly EV trained them (or at least, out the EVs I would put into a Primarina)

The SpAtk difference of 149 – 195, as you can see, is huge, but 170 is usable, but not ideal. You will definitely still be at a disadvantage, but much less so if you go through with EV training, but again, 170 or 195 isn't doing much different against an Eviolite Chansey wall, so strategy still plays a bigger part. And this all depends on whether or not you run into someone like me who fights with perfect mon, or someone like you who just uses their story mon.

In short, if you are set on using your story mon online, It might take a few days of berry growing and BP farming, but it's easy to EV train and worth the reward.

right speaking of MM, I'll trade someone that shiny Boldore I found for a 4+ IV non-ENG male. I'm still messing around with chaining for the most part but I'm going to switch to hatching soon, I haven't had a single shiny off a call for help chain yet.

Right now, I'm in the middle of completing the Pokedex, and I managed to get the most annoying trade evolutions out of the way; the last one being Porygon-Z. However, when I checked its IVs, this is what I got:

Anyway, if you have a Pokemon that only evolves via trading, just PM me and I'll set up a mock trade so you can evolve it. You can find my 3DS Friend code on my profile page.

I want to do a mega post about all of the stuff I like about this generation, but I'm still on a high in playing the game. But I did want to point out a couple of things:

The messed up nature of some of these Pokémon:

  • Araquanid is supposed to be a protective and nice Pokémon, but according to a Pokédex entry, it pulls weakened and vulnerable Pokémon into its water bubble.

…Araquanid, that would kill the poor things. You stupid spider.

  • Mareanie and Corsola

Considering (even with the slight stat buff) Corsola is one of the least intimidating Pokémon out there, one that specifically enjoys eating it is bad enough. The fact that they only appear when you trigger an SOS Battle just makes it worse. And then the fact that Mareanie just attacks the poor Corsola when it's weak enough to call for help is just the worst.

Toxapex looks like it's going to be the truth though in fighting. Regenerator and Recover in addition to a great defensive typing and around 150 in defensive stats outsideo of HP. It's Ferrothorn-esque with less offensive presence, but it's going to go great with my Ferrothorn. The concerns my Ferrothorn from Gen VI had in Fighting and Fire types are resisted by Toxapex.

  • Bewear

  • Salazzle is running literal harems

But in design, typing, Pokédex entry, and moveset (and in-game lore if you read what the NPC's say,) it's absolutely perfect in being the kind of Pokémon it is. It's a dangerously seductive femboss that's a lithe and slithery lizard with the unique ability (and Ability) to intoxicate everything.

Speaking of NPCs, another thing I like about the Island Trials are the Trial Guides.

"All the trial-goers I see out and about on their island challenges have such great smiles… They're as beautiful as the brilliant moon that hangs in Alola's night sky. The work doesn't pay a lick, but I can't give it up when it lets me see those happy faces."
"Seeing you young kids giving it your all like that… you all shine as bright as the sun over Alola! This may just be a volunteer position, but I'm sure glad that I decided to be a Trial Guide."

That's just really sweet. It adds depth to Alola and how much the Trials are a beloved part of the culture there.

Finally, the Team Skull pair in the Po Town Pokemon Center was amazing. Sure, you can get the Team Skull tank top there, but I just love the two busting rhymes and then passing off the rhyme to the Spinda.

"Yo, it's darker than Darkrai up in here, yo.
I'm gettin' scared like I met with a Fearow!
Ain't nobody around. I'm feelin' kinda down,
but I'm still holdin' it down here in Po Town!
Hey, yo, spin it, Spinda!"

Spi-spin!, Spi-spi-spin!"

Hi everyone, I'm here trying to get a shiny Magnemite in Pokemon Y with the Masuda method (breeding a Magneton from my game with a Japanese Ditto), and I've heard it can take quite a long time to get a shiny out of this method, but it's also supposed to be one of the more safer and easier methods to do outside of horde encounters and chaining.

My question for you today is, if you have tried the Masuda method and succeeded, how long did it take you and how many eggs did you go through to get your shiny?

Edit: also I'm aware of how Pokemon with Flame Body reduce egg hatch times by half so I do have a Flame Body Volcarona on my team to help out.

Last edited Dec 17, 2016 at 09:21PM EST

I've had it happen in 13 eggs and never at all. I think somebody did the math a couple generations ago and with the Shiny Charm/MM/optimum shiny breeding setup the average was like 800 eggs.

I haven't used the Masuda method in over two years, but if I remember correctly it took me about 12 hours and approximately 200-300 eggs. Surprised it didn't take me longer knowing my horrific luck with shiny Pokemon.

Anyone here with a spare Destiny Knot in Sun/Moon they could lend to me?

Aside from that, I managed to complete the Alola Pokedex! Now it's time for me to wait for the eventual Pokebank update in January so I can bring over my Pokemon from ORAS.

All yours. I have a team of faithful Level 50 Lilliput who can find them for me at will. If you haven't found someone else to spare one, I'll send you mine.

I'll message you my Friend Code once I get back home since my old FC isn't used anymore. If you have that Fire/Dragon to trade for it, that'd be great. I'll send you over one of my Leftovers on a HA Dratini.

yo losers I'm showing up after months because I'm looking for trades

I'm desperate for a goddam HA Eevee and have spent hours sos-chaining for one and got NOT ONE. I got a SHINY before I found even one HA Eevee.

Honestly atm the only good thing I have to offer are Timid Moonblast-Freezedry-Encore-Hypnosis Moon Ball A-Vulpixes with 3-4 perfect IVs.

But yeah, I'm looking for an HA Eevee as well as Eevees in each of the Johto balls minus love ball cause I already got that one.

Please I'm going insane looking for one with Anticipation.

Edit: I finally caught a bastard with it. Still looking for Johto ball Eevees though

I know I don't have any at the moment. But I'll let you know when/if I do if you still have a need for one.

@Lisa @Homura thanks for the tips regarding my shiny Magnemite, I've currently hatched 220 eggs in the last two days and counting. Will update when I actually get it.

Finally. I managed to finally hatch in 255 eggs, and evolved within the hour.

Naughty nature, dunno about IVs or anything like that, but I don't care much for all that since I don't play competitively (or online for that matter).

Can I just say that getting Necrozma was just too hard to find? What I mean is that Giratina, Kyruem and Zygarde in D/P, B/W and X/Y respectively could be found in new areas to be explored in the post-game and are just waiting in a room. Necrozma on the other hand is found in a previously accessible area, found randomly in the grass, and you're given no hint about this in the game. I mean how were you supposed to know about this without going to Bulbapedia or something?

Hidden secret found by a few and spread by word of mouth like the good old days?

The game does give you a vague idea of where Necrozma is. When you complete the Ultra Beast sidequest, Looker tells you he saw something that looks like an Ultra Beast in the skies of Melemele Island, which gives you the idea something's wandering around there. Though I do agree that the game doesn't do a good enough job explaining WHERE Necrozma's found.

To be honest, I don't really like how Necrozma's just a random Pokemon wandering around Ten Carat Hill. I think it would've made more sense if you found Necrozma waiting in the innermost chamber of the Resolution Cave (the one where you find Guzzlord), and moved Guzzlord to some other location on Poni Island. I mean, the layout of that particular chamber is similar to Zygarde's chamber in the Terminus Cave in XY, what with the branching paths that have orb items at the end of them.

Another reason to hate Nintendo:

They go after ROM hacks now . This time Pokémon Prison.

And remember, this is just an alteration mod, not a full ROM. It had been in development for eight years and was shut down just a few days before release!

(unless it's a fake notice but I doubt it).

And yet AGAIN, I see "Thanks for your support. Please don't attack Nintendo". WTF? This pattern is a bit too common. It's like they have received something else in addition to cease and desist.

Can these orders be stopped by making fans collectively to take legal responsibility for things like that in behalf of the developer? In that case, Nintendo doesn't have to just deal one or few people but maybe thousands.

I Am Just Gonna Copy-Paste This (This Is Not Mine By The Way):

"Hot take because I'm getting really annoyed by reactions to this as well as to the likes of projects like Uranium.
Please do not feel like Nintendo is betraying its fans when it works very hard to protect it's strongest brand alongside the Pokemon Company that we all know is super strict.
There's wiggle room here, like the top-down interpretation of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or even that site with a 3D modeled version of the NES Legend of Zelda. I, personally, do not believe these fan projects are a threat to Nintendo directly. And they're not losing money by these projects existing. But when somebody makes a new roster of Pokemon and pretty much re-skins Diamond and Pearl on the eve of new mainline entries, regardless of if it's being distributed for free, OF COURSE Nintendo is going to take that down. Do you know why Sega doesn't care anymore with Sonic fan projects? Because Sonic is not a bona fide money maker anymore. Anytime Sega announces a new Sonic thing, nobody is excited. Sega has been on a downward spiral with Sonic (and in general) for a long time and they know all they have to fall back on is the small community they have left. Mario is Nintendo's poster child who has arguably never received a bad game under Nintendo's direction, Pokemon is back to late-90's levels of popularity, and The Legend of Zelda is still cherished internally.
My biggest problem with it is that people keep doing these projects and expect Nintendo to suddenly change their tune. And when people say "Nintendo is so out of step with their community when they do stuff like this", my response is:
1) A fan project does not have the reach of the entire Nintendo community.
2) Most fan projects that get taken down are actual games. Fan music, and fan films don't get taken down. That Majora's Mask CG short is still up. "Time's End" is still available for download. And fan music inspired by these games that intertwine main themes of these titles is actually being sold for money!
I definitely rambled but it bring it back home, I just think after a little while we need a new approach to fan projects getting cancelled. Stop crying foul for a company like Nintendo protecting it's massively valuable IP.
And like Lefloic said above me, take your inspirations and make something new! I.e. Shovel Knight, Yooka Laylee, Axiom Verge."

Wait? People still defend Nintendo after all these cease and desist letters? (By the way, this isn't even a fangame, it's a ROM modification that doesn't even use the original ROM)

Let's ask this:

Do you want fangames to be taken down or not? If no and you have no evidence of those fangames damaging Nintendo, why do you defend Nintendo in the first place? Why do so many people think that legal right to take those down is the same as moral right to take these down?

You kinda need to stop treating companies in general as this singular entity, a company is made up of many many people, and not everyone in the company agrees with decisions made by people in another branch of the corporation. Just because some people in the legal department are being strict doesn't mean people like Masuda or Miyamoto feel the same. I believe Masuda even said he's fine with all fan works, but it's out of his hands if the company's legal department feels otherwise.

I'm perfectly aware that it's not everyone at Nintendo who want to take these games down.

I just wonder who is the main force of these decisions? Is it board of directors?

The takedowns aren’t necessarily at the discretion of any of the higher-ups working at Nintendo.
It’s most likely a bunch of "copyright protection" policies and acts obligating them to take stuff down.

Last edited Dec 21, 2016 at 05:24PM EST

I honestly don't believe they'd win a fair use lawsuit if it went before a judge. Nobody is doing it because its Nintendo, who can afford to fight Nintendo?? Just like fan art and fiction, fan games do no damage to the IP. All of these fan games made it abundantly clear they weren't affiliated with Nintendo, weren't trying to make money, etc etc. If anything, their mistake is continuing to call it a "Pokemon" game. Call it anything else and suddenly you're on the right side of the gray line.

I'm gonna try and let this be my last comment on the subject since now we're starting to get rather off topic.

I think the thing is that, unlike something like fan art or fan films (there are fan films based on Nintendo games with over millions of views on YouTube and they've been left alone), you could argue that fan games ultimately cut into Nintendo's bottom line of "providing experiences with franchises you can only get on Nintendo platforms," as a fan game like Pokemon Uranium or Prism could be seen as a "free alternative" to the games Nintendo and The Pokemon Company sell for a profit. And before you say "how would a free alternative be a bad thing?" have you not seen the backlash Nintendo has gotten over the fact they decided to make Super Mario Run a $10 mobile game instead of a free game? If people will complain about a Mario phone game costing money, they'll complain even more that the "real deal" Pokemon games cost like $40 (imagine right now how some people might have reacted if Pokemon Go wasn't F2P).

Also I've said this before in "unpopular opinions" but I'll say it again: if you actually have the talent to make things like AM2R and Pokemon Uranium, just remove the copyrighted content and make it an original IP. Look at Axiom Verge: very clearly inspired by Metroid, but because it's still it's own thing with it's own lore and mechanics the developers were able to sell that game for a profit, and Nintendo was happy to promote it on their YouTube channel as a "Metroid inspired indie game." Also Freedom Planet: started as a Sonic fan game, but instead because a game inspired by Sonic mechanics but with it's own lore, characters, etc. The game became a big success and the devs are now making a sequel. Also don't forget Toby Fox. He started with an Earthbound ROM hack, but he's said nowadays this hack is embarrassing for him to look back on, but he's really proud of the game that brought him fame: Undertale, a brand new IP that became a massive success. (also as a side note, Toby does have a stipulation regarding fan works, namely he says you can't do fan works that make some kind of profit or else him and his lawyer will be forced to issue a takedown)

Last edited Dec 21, 2016 at 08:56PM EST

I've seen the same argument used so many times. I could say to official developers as well: Why don't make a new game franchise based on your existing game franchise and improve upon them rather than making games from the same series over and over? Zachtronics is probably one of the few companies that has done that.

But you still didn't answer my question:

Do you want Nintendo fangames to be shut down or not? Yes or no?

Last edited Dec 21, 2016 at 10:47PM EST

I think the thing people getting mad at this and Pokemon Uranium and even other fan games are forgetting about is that the problem isn't that a fan project is getting taken down. It's that a Pokemon game not made by Gamefreak is getting taken down. Trademarks and copyrights, although abused, exist for a reason, and making it so other people can't make a copy of your product and use it's name for traction is the very thing copyright laws exist to stop.

Even if the game is free, it's still violating trademark, and like Fortune said, a free alternative of a certain product with the same name can make the original lose business. There are plenty of people who like the older games but don't like the newer ones that would gladly chose an unofficial fan game that's closer to the old game then official new games.

"Fortune said, a free alternative of a certain product with the same name can make the original lose business. "

Here's a challenge. Name some fangames that have damaged a company financially. Ok…name just one. Just one!

(Also, legally, even though I don't know any cases, trademarks can be taken away just by consumers saying that whatever product it is does not meet the standards of consistency.)

But you still didn’t answer my question:

Do you want Nintendo fangames to be shut down or not? Yes or no?

Last edited Dec 22, 2016 at 07:12AM EST

My feeling is that only fan games that are sold for money should be shut down. Most of these things are done as amateur fan projects for fun, and the developers/hackers don't make cash from them. From my perspective it's no different from fan fiction or fan art until someone actually tries to profit from the hard work of other people's creativity.

I understand that Nintendo has a legal priority to consider and the second a fan game was being sold for monetary gain I would absolutely support its shutdown.

Name some fangames that have damaged a company financially.

Tbh this is borderline unprovable one way or the other. Difficult to say without analysing downloads of the fan game versus purchases of the official game, and then you'd have to spy on people to see how many players of one also played the other.

Do you want Nintendo fangames to be shut down or not? Yes or no?

Yes. It's use of someone's intellectual property without their permission. In my opinion, there's no other argument that will trump that.

But as Fortune said, this is getting away from Pokémon. Especially with the questions about precedents and whether or not it hurts a company or brands, I think a full topic exists there with some valid points for either side.

Last edited Dec 22, 2016 at 08:15AM EST

There is an argument. Imagine if Nintendo didn't have a legal right to shut down Pokémon fangames. Then by your logic, would you have said "No"? Now what kind of sense does this make?

Wanting fangames to be shut down if Nintendo has legal rights to do so?

Not wanting fangames to be shut down if Nintendo didn't have a legal right to do so?

Remember, the content of Pokémon fangame , its quality, and the attitude of making it doesn't change in either case.

It's like saying that you should be arrested by authorities just because it's well within the legal reach of authorities to do so.

Are you defending the Nintendo or are you defending the law? Do you want the law to be changed or not?

Answer honestly.

{ Tbh this is borderline unprovable one way or the other. }

Which is why Nintendo would lose this battle in court. You have to prove you are being or would be damaged, just like defamation cases. The only reason Nin can send a cease and desist – which isn't even a legally binding threat – is because they used the name "Pokemon" like I said before. You can buy "Micromon" in the app store right now yet it's a straight up rip off (literally called "the first successful Pokemon knock off"), so why isn't Nintendo's team doing anything to stop their profits from slipping away to this admitted knock off being sold for profit?! Because they can't, because it's not being called Pokemon.

Awful lot of people in here offering a legal view who don't seem to know how the law works. "This is what the law's text says" isn't even a good argument in court because judges are free to interpret laws, they don't have to enforce them literally.

What I actually came back to this thread to ask is if anyone has tried to unlock their V5 poke finder and where you've found the best place to take pics for points is? I'm still trying to figure out the mechanics, everybody says it's like Snap but I'm putting PKMN dead center facing me so they fill the screen and only get 3k points, but some I'll get a profile of them walking further away from me and hit 8k. Not even the rare spawns either. I'm not gonna make it to 1.5m 3k at a time T_T

You feel a level of attachment to it unlike previous box legends which just show up late-game to do a plot thing and then be caught. Nebby still does the plot thing and then waits to be caught, but there's a feelsy context along with it that just makes it a million times better.

Nebby was pretty strong anyways, I configured 'es moveset and effort spread for moderate mayhem.

I have 2 boxes full of Totodiles with Eggmoves and random held items for the Wonder Trade Christmas giveaway. They all have Aqua Jet and Dragon Dance.

Also also I have 2 shiny Pichu's from SOS chaining. It's almost insultingly easy to set up to farm Pichu, you just need a Static lead to start the encounter and a Lightningrod Pikachu to declaw all the Thundershocks you'll see (or a Jolteon, yay Volt Absorb).

First attempt was a shiny spawn as a result of intense SOS EV training.

Second attempt I was originally chaining for Any Shiny but since I got a second Pichu I went with it.

I can't believe I actually bullshitted my way through the Battle Tree Doubles with Xurkitree and Mudsdale. There were two instances during the run where I nearly fucked. The first one was against an ice-type specialist, the other was a male sightseer who brought me down to my last Pokemon. In the ends, they were the ones who got fucked!

Ended up facing Blue. Was kind of rooting for Red because four of his Pokemon are weak to electric. Of course, I could have still lost Xurkitree if any of Red's team out-sped it. I was fortunate Blue didn't have Rhyperior on his team. That was my biggest concern going into the final round.

{ Also also I have 2 shiny Pichu’s from SOS chaining. }

Do you know about how many calls for help it took each time before one showed up? Rough estimate is fine, just wanna start to figure out if the average could be better or worse than MMing.

The shiny chances should be pretty decent after 40+ (and if you give up just catch the next one that pops up since it'd be guaranteed 4 perfect IVs). As long as you keep any Pichu/Pikachu around and don't let them struggle to death the SOS chain won't break.

(WARNING: This can take hours. I recently gave up an attempt to chain for a shiny Bounsweet/Goomy/Castform in Lush Jungle and ended up with a non-shiny Gooey Goomy with 4iv after about 3+ hours. I also have a Serious 4iv shiny Feebas that I NEED to trade evolve soon)

My strategy: Brought in a Static and a Lightningrod Pikachu (Static to increase odds of spawning Pichu on Melemele, may increase Magnemite spawn rate, Lightningrod to ground all their Thundershocks, although Volt Absorb from Jolteon will work too). Lead with Static until you see a Pichu, reduce it to red, switch to your Lightningrod/Volt Absorb pokemon, and use an Adrenaline Bomb to increase SOS call rate. Now faint most of what you see being called, but remember that Thundershock has only 30 PP (Tail Whip and Growl/Play Nice/Charm have somewhere around 20-30pp) so once the wild Pichu runs low on PP in general let in another new pichu and faint the original. Note: has a chance to directly result in shiny Pikachu and Happiny as well.

Based on other people's guesses in other forums and my many unsuccessful attempts to Masuda Method in Gens IV-VI averaging 200+ eggs, I'd say Shiny summoning via SOS call should be faster (unless you want the babbies for Wonder Trade giveaways).

Also also I have 2 shiny Pichu’s from SOS chaining. It’s almost insultingly easy to set up to farm Pichu, you just need a Static lead to start the encounter and a Lightningrod Pikachu to declaw all the Thundershocks you’ll see (or a Jolteon, yay Volt Absorb).

I never knew that Static would make Electric-types more likely to appear if you had it in the front of the party. I guess you learn something new everyday.

There are quite a lot of Abilities that have effects out of battle.

Magnet Pull: Attracts more steel-types

Intimidate/Hustle: practically reduces encounter rate

Sticky Hold/Suction Cups: greatly improves chances of actually hooking up stuff when fishing (less of the "There's nothing biting" fail messages)

Synchronize: Improves chances of making encounters spawn with the same nature (THIS IS VERY USEFUL)

Cute Charm: Improves chances of opposite-gender encounter spawns (THIS IS VERY USEFUL)

Compoundeyes: Improves chances any wild encounter that can be holding loot will actually have it (VERY USEFUL)

And then there's pickup which grants a chance at that a pokemon will find an item after a battle. Including pokeballs, nuggets and Destiny Knots.
