If you guys got anything to download while you still have these consoles, now's the time.
This honestly sucks though, it's not like the Wii and Wii U because PlayStation's pretty infamous for lackluster to no backwards compatibility.

What about DLCs?
Oh, great. How will others buy DLCs that don't appear in Special physical copies of certain games?
Keep in mind that the Vita is the only way to play Persona 1 and 2 legitimately.
That's why physical format will always be better than digital. You own your physical games, you can install, uninstall, sell, lend and whatever you want with them, while digital distribution is only a magnified form of renting, you don't own the games, as soon as the service shuts down you lose the games unless you have them installed, in which case you have to keep them installed, as soon as you uninstall them they're lost forever.

Without day one patches a lot of game disks are as good as coasters.
The true superior format is DRM free with LAN, preferably with an open source engine – you will see the original Doom and Quake continue to run on everything forever.
The next best thing is emulation, again, there will be a Game Boy and NES emulator for virtually everything, legal issues on acquiring the actual ROMs are the actual problem. Unfortunately while PSP emulation is in a very good state, and PS3 emulation is promising, there's been next to effort on Vita emulation and the most popular game for the console got a PC port so there will be even less going forward.
I've never seen a company as averse to game preservation as Sony it's like they're saying "Yeah pirate our games cause we're not gonna preserve them anyway lol."

Pre-Virtual Console Nintendo wins that hands down.
I wrote a wishlist on a notebook long ago and, I think, I might be able to get some games before the final nail of the coffin puts this digital store out for good. Otherwise, I'll most likely get them physical in old games stores or flea markets or get them straight out of other systems/platforms.
As someone who never owned a PS3 but wanted to get one eventually for select games like Infamous 1 and 2 and the PS3 Ratchet and Clank games (surprised Sony never had those remastered for the PS4 like Naughty Dog's PS3 output), this sucks to hear as now it'll make things way more difficult.

NEW UPDATE:
They're not shutting down PS3, PSP, Vita stores after all
Correction: they're not shutting down the stores for the PS3 and Vita. The PSP however, yeah it's shutting down in July.
Console Money-Saver Race: "WTF WHY IS SONY SHUTTING DOWN THE STORES LET'S PROTEST!"
Also Console Money-Saver Race: "Sony did the right thing and reversed course. This is now no longer an issue."
imagine not owning your digital games library permanently and having to own 5 different machines by 1 brand just to access the ones you have downloaded
