Sony reverses decision on handling of cross-gen ownership of Horizon Forbidden West following backlash

Initially Sony made the announcement that, when it comes to the release of Horizon Forbidden West, they were only doing "cross-gen ownership" (getting both PS4 and 5 copies of the game) if you bought the special edition version of the game. This caused quite a bit of backlash as it went against what Sony originally said they'd do with first party cross-gen releases. A few days later they backpedaled on this decision and stated that they would make it so that buying one version will get you both versions of the game after all. As a bit of a caveat though, Sony also confirmed that going forward after Horizon, cross-gen releases will have a $10 fee for upgrading from PS4 to PS5.

It's pretty clear Sony is sticking firm to the $70 price tag they've been using since the launch of the PS5, and they're trying to get average consumers to just "get used to it." To borrow a quote from Spawn Wave, it feels like Sony is really only helping in showcasing how much better Microsoft's "Smart Delivery" service is, as Microsoft has a thing in place where if a game is on Xbox One and Series X/S then you pop the same disc into either console to get the appropriate version hassle free (granted some third parties might have different ideas, like 505 Games with Control as that specific game doesn't use Smart Delivery and if you want the Series X version you have to buy that separately).
