This is a sad day for Dragon Quest fans. Koichi Sugiyama passed away at the age of 90. The cause of death was due to a septic shock.

He may have a controversy of some very awful opinions and beliefs in the past that a lot of people (mostly Twitter nutjobs) find offensive and demands Square Enix to cancel him. Even I strongly disagree with his beliefs. But nonetheless he is a legendary music composer that changed the gaming industry and made what's so beloved about the Dragon Quest franchise. According to the Dragon Quest website, Sugiyama's final work was to compose music for Dragon Quest XII.

Dragon Quest won't be the same without him. May he rest in peace.

Can somebody explain what his controversial opinions were?

He's your textbook Japanese far-right nationalist loon, and denying the war crimes the Empire committed during World War II is apparently only one of his tamer views

Oh, and he also didn't allow Square Enix to use the orchestral versions of his works in some of the later DQ titles just so he can force gamers to buy his albums/recordings

Thank you
so essentially op is saying disagreeing with the far right makes you a twitter radical

He has cruelly insulted entire marginalized communities, tried to downplay atrocities, and was an all-around greedy scumbag. If only he was held accountable in life…

Still, he makes amazing music, he is on par with John Williams.

Regardless of his opinions, RIP. I never played Dragon Quest but they pretty much left an impact among gamers and gaming, both Japanese and internationally and with his passing, it may as well leave an effect on some people in a way.
