Overview

In February of 2026, users of Twitter/X debated whether Sonic or Mario would win in a fight against each other. While those on the side of Mario argue that Mario has better reaction time and is more powerful, those on the side of Sonic argue that Sonic's speed outweighs Mario's reaction time.

Background

Since the release of the first Sonic game in 1991, Sonic and Mario have been pitted against each other due to the console wars. Discussion on the rivalry of Sonic and Mario slowed down when Nintendo revealed that they had partnered up with Sega to make Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Though the companies confirmed that Mario and Sonic are not enemies, some still like to debate who would win in a fight.

Origin

The debate sparked back up when user @OhnimusP3767 responded to a post about the Mario vs. Sonic death battle by reposting a video of Sonic easily defeating Mario in a fight, stating, "that fight would realistically go like this." The tweet amassed 1.2 million views and 10k likes in less than a week.

Many Mario fans responded to this tweet by claiming that Mario has better reaction time, making Mario proficient at dodging Sonic's attacks. User @KAD_ProductionZ responded to this, stating, "What’s the purpose of a reactionary speed if you can’t move as quick to REACT TO IT!?" The tweet gained 657k views and 5.8k likes in less than a week.

Sonic vs. sandwich

In response to the claim that Mario had faster reaction time than Sonic, user @MelohRush posted a clip from the intro of Super Mario Odyssey in which Mario fails to react to a spiked top hat flying towards him. In response, @brycecarringto5 replied with a gif of Sonic getting hit with a sandwich. The tweet amassed 1.9 million views and 10k likes in less than a week.

The tweet was praised as an "unbeatable piece of malicious propaganda", with edits being made of Zomom hitting a black flash with his sandwich.

Sonic vs. Little Mac

On February 12th, user @polarbearcomic posted an animation of Sonic bashing Mario's head into pieces. The tweet received 2.5 million views and 18k likes in less than a week.

@Repairedhy posted a drawing of Mario ducking before Sonic can put his hands on him in response, leading @flurryfrenzy to ask if Sonic would lose to Little Mac, since he has great reaction time. User @succeroni11 responded to this tweet with an animation of Sonic getting his head punched off by Little Mac. The tweet gained 350.7k views and 6.1k likes in 2 days.

Mario crushing Sonic's skull

On February 14th, user @NooB_B3D posted an animation of the Omni-Man Crushes Skull meme with Mario in the place of Omni-Man and Sonic in the place of Red Rush. The tweet received 2.1 million views and 18k likes in 2 days.

In response, @polarbearcomic posted another animation in which Mario misses his attack on Sonic and gets his neck snapped, ending with Sonic's disgusted expression. The tweet amassed 871.3k views and 11k likes in 1 day.
