Origin

In the 1995 film Billy Madison, the titular character, played by actor Adam Sandler, must go back to school and complete the first through 12th grades as an adult so that he can inherit his father's company.

In one scene, Madison returns to the first grade and is greeted by the children, who are now his classmates. He sits on the carpet with the kids while the teacher reads them a story.^[1]

On February 7th, 2012, Redditor Scotchya_12 posted a meme using the image of Madison sitting in the classroom under the caption, "How I feel sitting in my 101 elective as a last semester senior…," to the /r/funny^[2] subreddit, gaining over 1,600 upvotes in 14 years. This is one of the earliest known, notable versions of the meme.
