The discussion gained significant traction on X / Twitter in mid-July 2026, with many users arguing that AI-generated food appeared uncanny, overly glossy or otherwise unappetizing, while others criticized the images for creating misleading expectations about the meals being served.

Discourse about restaurants and food-related businesses using AI-generated art in their marketing, signage or other advertisements began appearing online as AI tools became more widely accessible in early 2023, with some embracing it as a cost-saving method and others criticizing it for being misleading or uncreative, among other critiques.

One such early example of this debate appeared on January 22nd, 2023, when X^[6] / Twitter user EnuliPepyeh replied to the account @SentimentalCook, who was praising AI images for food business owners, criticizing their positive take on the new concept. However, the tweet garnered little engagement.

Discussions about the use of AI imagery in food continued over the following months and years, such as an article published on Eater^[7] on August 1st, 2023, titled "Why AI Food Photography Is So Unappetizing."

On January 15th, 2025, Redditor DublinItUp made a post to the /r/mildlyinfuriating^[8] subreddit showing several examples of restaurants using AI images in their menu items, titling the post, "Restaurants shouldn't be allowed to use AI images," and garnering over 26,000 upvotes and 720 comments in roughly a year and a half.

On April 20th, 2025, another post to the /r/mildlyinfuriating^[9] subreddit criticizing a restaurant using AI imagery in its menu received over 18,000 upvotes and 460 comments before it was removed.

July 2026 Viral Debate

Although AI-generated restaurant advertisements had appeared throughout the early-to-mid 2020s as image-generation technology became more widely available, discussion of the practice intensified in July 2026 after numerous users on X / Twitter began sharing photographs of AI-generated menus, window posters and delivery app listings from restaurants across the United States.

On July 11th, 2026, X^[1] user @kitosan criticized restaurants for replacing real photos of their menu items with AI-generated images, arguing that the practice made the food look less appealing rather than more professional. The post received over 13.1 million views and 74,000 likes in five days, largely kicking off the discourse on the site.

Later on July 11th, 2026, X^[2] user @NotSoGenesiz quote-tweeted the post, writing, "do small business owners not realize how fucking appalling this looks," echoing widespread criticism that many restaurants were unknowingly making their food appear worse with AI-generated images. The post received over 5.9 million views and 228,000 likes in a similar timeframe.

On July 14th, 2026, X^[3] user @SayaDoesStuff shared examples of local restaurants using AI-generated food photos, joking that the AI-generated noodles made the images look even more unsettling. The post received over 1.6 million views and 3,700 likes in two days.

On July 15th, 2026, X^[4] user @aretheygay argued that even low-quality real photographs were "100000000000x more appetizing" than AI-generated food images, saying the trend looked "disgusting" and conveyed "a deep insecurity." The post received over 2.1 million views and 65,000 likes in one day.

Later that day, YouTuber and X^[5] user Justin Whang (@JustinWhang) quoted one of the AI-generated noodle examples, joking, "Why'd they train the food ai on junji ito," comparing the distorted food imagery to the horror manga artist's work. The post received over 424,000 views and 17,000 likes in under one day.
