Bad Advice Cat is an advice animal image macro series with a cat recommending terrible or inane solutions to life's problems, similar to Advice Dog.

Origin

While the original stock photo has yet to be found, the picture of the cat was first used in a macro on Trollcats^[1] on April 2nd, 2010. One of the first image macros with the cat's head superimposed on the red and yellow background appeared on MemeGenerator^[3] and FunnyJunk^[2] on June 6th, 2010.

Spread

Another instance featuring a reference to Press ALT + F4 trolling scheme was uploaded onto Know Your Meme on August 14th, 2010. Days later, American conservative radio host Tammy Bruce posted a Bad Advice Cat image on her blog^[4] on August 18th, 2010.

Users began actively making these images on QuickMeme^[5] around April 2011. At the end of the month, a compilation of images appeared on Smosh.^[6] More compilations were posted to 1mut^[7] in August 2011, followed by The Bigster^[8] and the Post Monkey^[9] in September 2011. There is also an active Tumblr^[10] tag.
