About

Don't Even Trip Dawg! also known by the slang acronym DETD, refers to an image macro of the character Morty Smith from the Adult Swim animated series Rick and Morty, pictured smirking with his arms crossed and a bottom yellow text caption reading, "Don't even trip dawg!" The image was later turned into an animation and GIF with Morty seen bobbing and swaying, often paired with a remix of the Samsung whistle notification sound. In late 2025, the Don't Even Trip Dawg image macro became an exploitable element as variations of it, which were recaptioned and edited, surfaced en masse on TikTok, predominantly as reaction images and stickers in TikTok comment sections. The image originally comes from an Adult Swim emoji keyboard from 2016.

Origin

On June 23rd, 2016, Adult Swim launched a downloadable emoji keyboard for iOS and Android. The company shared a post about the launch on Twitter / X [1] on that day.

On November 16th, 2016, Tumblr [2] user rickandmorty shared a promotional image for the emoji keyboard that highlighted one of the stickers, showing Morty Smith from Rick and Morty smirking with his arms crossed and a bottom caption reading, "Don't even trip dawg!" The Tumblr post received 70 likes in nine years.

The image notably resurfaced on August 17th, 2025, when X[3] user @HomerFan1738 posted a low-quality version of it with a white background, gaining over 13,000 likes in two months.

In Rick and Morty, the catchphrase "Don't even trip, dawg!" comes from season 1, episode 2, titled, "Lawnmower Dog."[5] In one scene, Rick and Morty are consoling Scary Terry, a parody of Freddy Krueger from the A Nightmare on Elm Street horror film franchise, by telling him "don't trip" and referring to him as "dawg."[6]

Spread

Heading into early September 2025, TikTokers began using the Don't Even Trip Dawg image in comment sections, leading to some memetic use in video form.

For instance, on September 1st, TikToker[4] @rare_.1303 shared a video edit meme that spliced clips from the Rick and Morty episode "Lawnmower Dog" with the Don't Even Trip Dawg image, gaining over 7,200 likes in a month.

By early October 2025, several exploited versions of the meme, in which the caption was recaptioned or Morty's face was edited, had surfaced in comment sections across TikTok. The creators of the images have remained largely unknown because of the choice of upload method.

For instance, on October 4th, a TikToker named @thedih36121 commented on TikToker[4] @rare_.1303's video edit, attaching an exploited version of the Don't Even Trip Dawg meme that replaced the word "dawg" with "mane" and replaced Morty with the bear from the "You Like Dirty Adult Humor, Mane?" meme. The comment received over 290 likes in three weeks. Its exact origin is unconfirmed.
