Background

On August 18th, 2026, Grand Theft Auto 6 became subject to a leak when two gameplay videos and an image purportedly showing the game's complete map began circulating online.^[1] The videos showed the protagonist Jason Duval playing basketball outside his home and driving a vehicle before attacking an NPC (example clip shown below).

The material was associated with a group calling itself CyberLeek, which promoted a cryptocurrency meme coin and published a manifesto criticizing practices including all-digital game releases, the removal of purchased content and the lack of a physical-disc version of GTA 6.^[2] The group also threatened additional publishers with similar leaks.

Although the authenticity and age of the material were unconfirmed, Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two Interactive reportedly began issuing takedowns against uploads on social media.^[2]

Further Leaked GTA 6 Material

On August 19th, 2026, CyberLeek released additional footage showing gameplay of a taser being used and several seconds of a cutscene, following through on threats made the previous day.^[3]

The footage (example seen below) again promoted the group's memecoin and included the message, "No physical discs? Then more leeks!" The inclusion of story-related material notably raised concerns among many that future releases could contain plot spoilers.

Later that day, a fourth video appeared showing knife combat and ending with the same cutscene, whose dialogue was interpreted as a taunt directed at Rockstar. The group also used the release to disavow social media accounts claiming to represent it.

On August 20th, 2026, a fifth gameplay video was released after CyberLeek conducted a poll allowing holders of its memecoin to vote on which footage would appear next.^[4] The winning video featured gameplay of an airplane being flow and, notably, showed Jason firing bullets into a wall to spell "LEEK," the name of the hackers.

The sequence prompted widespread speculation that the leaker possessed access to a playable build of GTA 6 rather than a collection of prerecorded clips, increasing concerns that additional footage could reveal significant portions of the game's story. The age, completeness and origin of the apparent build remain unknown.

On August 21st, 2026, a sixth gameplay video surfaced, extending the leaks into a fourth consecutive day. The footage featured supercar gameplay and again promoted the associated memecoin, carrying the watermark "HIGHER MARKET CAP = MORE LEEKS."^[1]

A fan then reportedly traced the cryptocurrency activity to a Seychelles-based exchange, potentially providing a means of identifying the person or group responsible.^[1] CyberLeek continued to threaten further releases, while Rockstar had yet to issue a public statement on the incidents.

For instance, on August 18th, 2026, the same day the leaks first appeared, Redditor Cosmicking04 posted a Joey's Delayed Reaction meme referencing the initial leaked gameplay to the /r/memes^[5] subreddit, garnering over 1,300 upvotes and 70 comments in three days.

Also on August 18th, X / Twitter^[10] user bloomjpg reposted a clip of streamer xQc criticizing the leakers during a livestream, garnering over 610,400 views, 3,200 likes and 420 replies in three days.

On August 19th, Redditor vinayak_117 posted a Swole Doge vs. Cheems meme about the leaks to the /r/dankmemes^[6] subreddit, mocking the marketing team and receiving nearly 340 upvotes and 30 comments in two days.

Also that day, Twitter^[12] user XVyse2 tweeted a clip of Eric Cartman from South Park having a nightmare to show fans of the game realizing that the leaks are from a recent build, garnering over 1.1 million views, 41,000 likes and 170 replies in two days.

On August 20th, 2026, Redditor HAXAD2005 shared a Reginald Skulinski Staring meme to the /r/memes^[7] subreddit, referencing the leakers spelling their name in-game to prove they had a build of GTA 6, garnering over 9,200 upvotes and 300 comments in a day.

That same day, Redditor fileunderaction posted a I Don't Care Who the IRS Sends, I'm Not Paying Taxes meme to the /r/memes^[8] subreddit, criticizing the hackers for shilling a meme coin alongside their leaks, receiving over 2,800 upvotes and 70 comments in a day.

Also on August 20th, Twitter^[13] user NikTek tweeted a Hank Finds Out Early meme about the three days of leaks to that point, garnering over 1.6 million views, 51,000 likes and 160 replies in a day.
