Chuckling Squad Hacks

Overview

Chuckling Squad Hacks refers to a series of hacks performed via AT&T sim card replacement on popular YouTubers and Actors James Charles , King Bach, Etika , Amanda Cerny and Shane Dawson and Jack Dorsey. The hacker, who repeatedly included the phrase "chuckling RN" in Twitter and Instagram bios, hacked accounts over a two day period in August 2019 and posted numerous offensive tweets, videos and images to their accounts.

Background

On August 23rd, 2019, Twitter users began to notice that Amanda Cerny, Etika and Shane Dawson's Twitter and Instagram accounts had been hacked. Twitter user @missy_pri2^[1] tweeted a screenshot of Amanda Cerny's Instagram account (shown below, left). Twitter user @tombatkai^[2] posted a Shane Dawson tweet by the hacker saying, "Shane Dawson was hacked and im going to hell for laughing at this" (shown below, right).

Developments

On August 23rd, 2019, actor King Bach, took to Twitter to blame AT&T for being hacked. The video gained over 2,800 likes and 480 retweets in five days.

On August 24th, many Twitter users posted screenshots of the hacked accounts before the original owners were able to access their accounts. That day James Charles account was also compromised for a few hours. That evening, James Charles^[3] tweeted "My ATT phone number was compromised earlier today and all of my social media accounts were therefore hacked too! Your fraud department just HUNG UP ON ME. Contact me immediately. This is a major security threat & my lawyer will be reaching out too" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 2,600 likes and 160 retweets in four days. Keemstar ^[4] also commented on the hacking and blamed AT&T in a tweet that accumulated over 8,200 likes and 800 retweets in four days (shown below, right).

That day, Insider^[5] shared a screenshot of the hackers phone that was shared on Discord. The screenshot showed angry direct messages from PewDiePie and KeemStar due to the hackers offensive nature toward each YouTuber, especially in hacking deceased YouTuber Etika's account (shown below).

On August 24th, DramaAlert uploaded a video which covered the general information regarding the hacking. The video garnered over 1.7 million views and 101,000 likes in four days (shown below).

Jack Dorsey Hack

On August 30th, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's Twitter account was hacked in a similar fashion, as the account began tweeting obscenitiesm, jokes such as Chungus and the hashtag #ChucklingSquad (shown below).

Twitter users joked about the irony of Jack getting hacked on his own account. User @DocMcCockiner stated it was "fucking hilarious" (shown below, left). User @TomGara joked it was a result of the entire Twitter staff going to Burning Man (shown below, right).
