Overview

Indian Truck Driver Harjinder Singh Florida Accident refers to a fatal car accident that occurred in Florida in mid-August 2025 because an Indian semi-truck driver, named Harjinder Singh, made an illegal U-turn on a turnpike, resulting in a passenger vehicle slamming into the truck's trailer. An in-cabin dashcam video recorded the moment of the accident, showing Singh and a passenger while Singh made the turn. The viral video of the crash and the story of Singh's dangerous truck driving sparked viral backlash, discourse and memes on social media sites like Twitter / X and Reddit in the following days. Reports then surfaced that Singh was an illegal immigrant in the U.S. His Indian nationality and his immigration status sparked anti-immigration and anti-Indian sentiments online, which were widely expressed in memes about "Indian truck drivers."

Background

On August 16th, 2025, local Florida news outlet CBS12[1] reported on a fatal car accident that occurred on August 12th, when a semi-truck made an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike in St. Lucie County, resulting in a minivan carrying three people smashing into the truck's trailer. The three adults in the minivan were killed.[2]

The truck driver was identified as 28-year-old Harjinder Singh, an Indian national who, according to reports, had entered the U.S. illegally in 2018 across the U.S.-Mexico border. Singh reportedly received his CDL license in California.[4]

Singh flew to California the day after the accident and was detained there. Singh was charged with three counts of vehicular homicide. He was also traveling with a 25-year-old passenger, Harneet Singh, who was not injured, but also flew to California with him.[1][3]

Singh was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after the crash and was set to be deported back to India.[1][3]
