Overview

Ally Sexual Predator Allegations Controversy refers to allegations made by top Super Smash Brothers player Tamim on Twitter against fellow top Smash player Ally that Ally was in a relationship with a minor. Tamim also alleged that other Smash player StaticManny was a sexual predator. The tweets galvanized the Smash community, causing major figures to express their disgust with the community, with players like Alpharad retiring from the competitive scene altogether as a result of the drama.

Background

On March 22nd, 2019, top Super Smash Brothers player Tamim posted a series of tweets in which he expressed his disgust with the game's competitive community, most notably calling out fellow player Ally, 28, for having a relationship with a minor.[1] The tweets and Tamim's Twitter account have since been deleted.

Developments

Ally Allegations

At a certain point in Tamim's tweets, he identified the alleged victim of Ally's relationship as other top player CaptainZack, who is 17. This led to Zack allegedly deleting Tamim's account, which he had access to, and Tamim continuing his allegations on another account, @tamimexposing.[2] In one tweet on that account, Tamim posted a screenshot from a Discord chat in which Ally states that Zack liked him and he liked him back (shown below, left). The following day, CaptainZack responded on Twitter,[3] thanking his fans for support and stating nothing sexual happened between him and Ally (shown below, right).

tamimexposing @tamimexposing 6m k here's proof #1 let me do my prayer now Basically Zack liked me. I end up caring for him and lilking him back Mistake didn't like that that me and zack were that close. so he basically made it that Zack stopped liking me even tho he didn't want to stop thats it Ally hes been harassing me since then i agree i shouldnt have but i let my feelings get the best out of me. but yeah thats the reason excal bu you're such a liar you lied to me agair after everything i'm not even upset just disappointed plz you guys got back together after you told CaptainZackCaptainZack Mar 23 thank you all for the supportive messages over the past day. i dont feel like i need to make a statement, everything has already been said. im ok everyone Kershew @krschu00 Mar 23 Could you please clarify for the record whether or not you and Elliot slept together? That would help the community make decisions instead of being confused 37 CaptainZack @CaptainZack ( Follow ) Replying to @krschu00 no nothing ever happened even close to that 4:05 PM-23 Mar 2019

The drama caused notable Smash player Alpharad, who has also grown popular for his Smash play on YouTube, to announce he was leaving the competitive scene "for the forseeable future"[4] (shown below).

Jacob Rabon IV @alpharadtv Follow I won't be attending Smash events for the foreseeable future. I don't condone the current state of the scene. Figureheads of the competitive community need to use this opportunity to make the scene better instead of enabling these problems going forward Please take action 5:28 PM-22 Mar 2019

StaticManny Allegations

Responding to the allegations made against him, StaticManny[5] provided screenshots showing how Tamim had edited his screenshots to make it look like Manny was harassing a girl when they were engaging in consensual sexual conversation (shown below).

The drama was discussed in several Reddit threads, appearing in both /r/SmashBros[6] and /r/OutOfTheLoop.[7][8] The situation was covered in a video by Smash community member Omni, who argued that it illustrated the dark side of the Smash community and that people remaining silent on these issues they may know about enables predators (shown below).

June and July 2019 Events

On June 15th, 2019, at Long Island, New York local tournament AON, Ally, playing Snake, was defeated by a relatively unknown 15-year old player named Bocchi, playing Isabelle (shown below).

The upset drew attention from the Smash community and gaming outlets, including Kotaku,[9] who wrote an article about the upset. Over the following weeks, Bocchi[10] reported receiving hate online, to the point that on July 2nd, she announced she was retiring as "Bocchi" (shown below). However, she continued tweeting afterwards, saying she had received a lot of support from the community.

bocchi Follow @bocchibelle nvm. final tweet from this account. will either be done with smash or begin competing under a new name to avoid this attention i've gained. I will stop streaming and find my path by myself. Do not expect me to be bocchi anymore. I'm done. If i do come back to the community 11:37 PM 2 Jul 2019

On July 4th, Ally announced that his previous denials about his relationship with CaptainZack were a lie, and he had in fact had a relationship with Zack. He also announced his retirement from Smash.[11]

My ex girlfriend and I Nothing has changed with what I said in my statement regarding my ex about a year ago. She is using my situation with Zack to push her story If you aren't aware of it, look up "my statement" I made about her about a year ago. Additionally I already went to court to settle it and the judge told me not to speak to her again to not have to deal with her(which I have been doing and why I didn't bother addressing it before/won't address it publicly anymore) This is being taken care of in another form but it's not the actual issue I want to address About Zack and I I think it's time to come out clean. It's been rough months mentally for me, unsure if everything was going to end up okay, but it didn't. I'm going to admit I dated Zack. I didn't do him any wrongs but it was a stupid mistake regardless and I'm really sorry for not saying it until now. I was really scared. I'm sorry Tamim for lying to you about dating him Because I feel like it's the right thing to do, I'm going to retire from Smash. Sorry to everyone I disappointed. Sorry Canada.

The proximity of these two events led people compare them and show how people supporting Ally and bullying bocchi was emblematic of the Smash community's toxicity. User @OnuaMWD[12] posted a comparison of reactions to the controversies, gaining over 270 retweets and 1,500 likes (shown below, left). User @Toph_bbq[13] stated players being more upset at Ally retiring than Bocchi being bullied "disgusted" him, gaining over 1,200 retweets and 8,000 likes (shown below, right). The controversies were covered in two threads on /r/OutOfTheLoop.[14][15]

Onua Follow @OnuaMWD "Imao bocchi should just get over it. No one really did anything that bad to her. Grow thicker skin lol. Who cares." "ALLY PLS DONT GO!!! I KNOW YOURE A P--- AND YOU ADMITTED IT BUT I LIKE UR SNAKE AND MARIO!!! DONT GOOOOOOO0000000" 1:56 AM 4 Jul 2019 Toph Paradigm Shift SOON Follow @toph_bbq I saw way more top Ultimate players express sadness at Ally retiring than to say a word about Bocchi being bullied. You disgust me. You know exactly who you are. 3:03 AM 4 Jul 2019
