Gnarpy is the name given to a character found in the Roblox custom game map Regretevator. Gnarpy, depicted as a green alien cat character, gained virality within the Roblox fandom due to his unique voice clip, a throwback to an earlier meme, and his character design, leading to him being used in memes and fan art since release.

Origin

Gnarpy was released along with Regretevator as a custom game mode in the Roblox game universe. On September 5th, 2023, YouTuber The Real CD^[1] uploaded the in-game sounds used by Gnarpy, earning over 85,000 views in six months and helping to popularize Gnarpy on the platform (shown below).

It was noticed by fans of Gnarpy, however, that his talking sound is a sped-up version of a previously viral green cat sound. On April 13th, 2023, the YouTuber Rage^[2] uploaded a photoshopped image of a cat, making them appear to be a green alien, along with the voice clip, with a description calling them a green alien cat (shown below, left). The original audio of the green alien cat, when not sped up, is of a child forgetting to turn off their voice changer during a Zoom classroom, as shown in the YouTube upload by AdrianDankMemeslol^[3] on December 10th, 2020 (shown below, right).

Spread

Gnarpy continued to spread online as part of Roblox meme lore, often due to their voice. On TikTok, short clips of Gnarpy doing covers of other popular songs started to get popular, with TikToker Epic Display Name^[4] helping to popularize the trend by uploading a TikTok on December 25th, 2023, in which Gnarpy sings the song "Good Lookin" by Dixon Dallas (shown below, left).

On December 27th, TikToker cuongytofficial2^[5] started to upload song remixes with Gnarpy singing "New Bugatti," earned over 2,500 likes in one week (shown below, right).
