About
Go Girl Give Us Nothing is a catchphrase used in comments, image macros and videos to tease musical artists and other celebrities for an unenergetic performance or other artistic output. The meme is particularly associated with English and Albanian pop artist, singer and songwriter Dua Lipa and her dance moves during a concert in 2018.
Origin
On February 22nd, 2018, Dua Lipa posted her performance of "New Rules" at the 2018 BRIT awards on YouTube (shown below, top). In the comments of the video, a user named Tobias commented on Lipa's performance by saying, "I love her lack of energy, go girl give us nothing!" (shown below, bottom).
Spread
The phrase became commonly paired with artists and musicians over the following several years, mostly as a way for fans to tease the artists. In particular, fans of idol Jennie from Blackpink often used the phrase regarding Jennie, as she was criticized for giving lackluster performances in 2018 (examples shown below).[1] The meme's relation to Blackpink has made it popular in the K-pop fandom.
On April 2nd, 2021, YouTuber Juan Mantilla posted a video of Addison Rae titled "Addison Rae giving us NOTHING," gaining over 2 million views (shown below, left). On April 19th, YouTuber icon posted a video of Selena Gomez with the title, "Go Selena, give us nothing," gaining over 1.5 million views (shown below, right).
In June of 2021, Dua Lipa acknowledged in an interview with Vanity Fair[2] that she was aware of the meme and that it motivated her to improve. After acknowledging the "nothing" comment, she said:
“I just wanted to make sure that this time around, I was very much in control of the fact that I’m going to do the music, then I’m going to rehearse. And then when I come in and I do the performances, they’re all going to be amazing. I’m going to prove to people that I can do this and that I’m here to stay.”
