Ho Said She Like Steve Lacy refers to a catchphrase used to joke about changing one's personality, appearance or interests to appeal to a potential romantic partner. Memes using the phrasal template "Ho said she like" first spread in April 2022 with regard to the singer Steve Lacy. Such memes were often paired with photos of people holding electric guitars. Different variations were introduced online in subsequent months.
Origin
The earliest known iteration of the "Ho Said She Like Steve Lacy" meme is likely an Instagram[1] story posted by user @301_chi sometime in April 2022. The image shows a man wearing a durag and looking off to the side while holding a unplugged electric guitar (seen below).
Spread
On August 8th, 2022, X[2] user @dieujuu posted an image of someone playing the trumpet alongside text that read, "Ho said she like Miles Davis." The post gathered over 7,000 likes in two years (seen below, left). The meme was quoted in a May 27th, 2023 post by X[3] user @YJXIAOLANG, where it gathered over 18,000 likes in a year (seen below, right).
On April 29th, 2023, TikToker[4] @mitskilover55 posted a video using the phrasal template "Ho said she like," and showing how he would dress to impress someone who likes different artists, including Steve Lacy, Tyler the Creator, and Kanye. The video gathered over 2 million plays and 590,000 likes in a year (seen below, left). On February 16th, 2024, TikToker[5] @filmbrofobic posted a video with text that read, "ho said she like enya," gathering over 100,000 plays and 37,000 likes in a month (seen below, right).
