This is sometimes used to to explain why one has posted offensive, far-fetched or disgusting contents on image boards and discussion forums.

Since the catchphrase is used to create a humorous juxtaposition between the image and the text, the more grave the content of the post, the greater the irony of “doing it for the lulz” and ultimately, the greater the lulz. As such, "for the lulz" image macros typically feature references to offensive subject topics including the Holocaust, suicide, murder, terrorism and rape.
