ID Adam

Overview

ID Adam is the nickname given to a man who was filmed asking a black woman to provide proof that she was a local resident in order to use a community pool in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Background

On July 4th, 2018, Facebook^[2] user Jasmine Edwards posted a video with the message "Racial profiling at its worst!", featuring footage of herself discussing her right to use a community pool with an unidentified local resident and the police at the Glenridge Community in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Within 48 hours, the video received more than 4.8 million views, 90,000 shares and 31,000 reactions. The original video is no longer public but mirrors have been uploaded to YouTube (shown below).

In the video, the man appears to demand that Edwards prove her residency by showing an ID, to which she responds that she believes she is being racially profiled. Edwards then demonstrates that her card is able to open the security door at the pool, leading the police to apologize for the altercation.

Adam Identified

On July 6th, 2018, the Winston-Salem Journal^[3] reported that the Glenridge Homeowners Association identified the man as Adam Bloom, who served as the pool chairman and board member of the community homeowner association but had resigned following the incident. Additionally, the article contained a statement from Bloom's lawyer John Vermitsky, who claimed Bloom was performing his duty after another woman approached him asking if Edwards was a member of the pool.

That day, the official Facebook page for Bloom's employer Sonoco published an announcement that "the employee involved is no longer employed by the company in any respect" (shown below). Within five hours, the post gained over 1,900 reactions, 550 shares and 370 comments.^[1]
