About

"It Runs Doom" is an expression indicating that a device is capable of running the 1993 first-person shooter video game Doom, which has been successfully ported to a variety of electronic gadgets designed for purposes other than gaming.

Origin

On December 10th, 1993, Doom was released by id Software for MS-DOS personal computers. In 1997, the company released the game's source code, allowing enthusiasts to port the game to a variety of devices. On August 12th, 2006, YouTuber KevlarGorilla released a video in which he plays Doom on a Nintendo DS (shown below).



Spread

On December 1st, 2006, YouTuber Stephen English uploaded footage of Doom being played on a Scope monitor (shown below, left). On April 8th, YouTuber bogaut posted footage of Doom running on a 5th generation iPod music player (shown below, right).



On March 24th, 2009, YouTuber yerzmyey released a video of the game running on the ZX Spectrum 8-bit personal computer (shown below, left). On February 16th, 2011, YouTuber DJ Omnimaga uploaded a video of a graphing calculator running the original Doom game (shown below, right).



On October 16th, 2013, the "It Runs Doom" Tumblr[1] blog was launched, which highlights images and video of Doom being played on a variety of electronic devices. On July 26th, 2014, YouTuber Aussie50 posted a video of a person playing Doom on an automated teller machine (shown below, left). On July 16th, 2015, YouTuber TheZombieKiller uploaded footage of Doom running inside a virtual arcade machine within the GZDoom port of the game (shown below, right).



On May 8th, 2016, the Vice technology blog Motherboard[2] published an article listing various devices capable of running Doom. On November 20th, YouTuber diffractive – b3ll posted a video of Doom being played on a MacBook Pro Touch Bar (shown below). Over the next month, the video gained over 1.44 million views and 400 comments.
