About
It's What Clara Would Have Wanted or It's What Clara Would've Wanted, also known simply as It's What Clara Wanted, refers to a catchphrase and meme derived from a loose quote spoken by the character Soldier Boy (portrayed by actor Jensen Ackles) in the final season of the American satirical superhero television series The Boys, which received many negative reviews from both critics and fans in May 2026. The scene the phrase is lifted from comes from season 5 episode 6 and depicts Soldier Boy referencing Stormfront, or Clara Vought, during a confrontation with Homelander (Antony Starr).
The final season, and this dialogue in particular, were widely criticized by fans of the series for what they described as inconsistent and nonsensical character motivations. The "It's What Clara Would Have Wanted" catchphrase is not spoken verbatim, instead developing through osmosis via discussions around the series, as well as related shitposting communities, particularly on Reddit. Similar to the Game of Thrones catchphrase Dany Kind of Forgot About the Iron Fleet, the phrase is primarily used in memes and comments to mock The Boys TV series and its creator Eric Kripke.
Origin
The catchphrase originated from The Boys season 5, episode 6, titled "Though the Heavens Fall," which aired on May 6th, 2026, and season 5, episode 7, "The Frenchman, the Female, and the Man Called Mother's Milk," which aired on May 13th of the same year.
The birth of the meme stems from episode 6 during an exchange between Soldier Boy and Homelander, who is his son with Stormfront (Clara). During the scene, Soldier Boy acquires the V1 compound, which makes supers in the universe immortal and immune to the super-killing virus developed by The Boys, and decides to give it to Homelander after initially rejecting him. The dialogue goes as follows:
SB: You know, Clara used to say the craziest shit. That I was the strongest Supe alive, the "ultimate expression" of what we could be. But she was wrong. She hadn't met you yet.
HL: But you hate me.
SB: I love her more. And this is what she would want.
A clip posted by the official Amazon Prime Video UK & IE YouTube[1] channel, @PrimeVideoUK, on May 8th, 2026, shows the interaction, with the video receiving over 225,000 views in about two weeks.
Though the line, "It's what Clara would have wanted," is not directly quoted in the scene, it would later become the de facto iteration of the phrase from the fandom and the meme. The earliest example of a similar wording was posted on X[2] / Twitter by user @TheVsk_ on the morning of May 6th, 2026, though the post did not gain much traction.
In episode 7, the lines, "I loved Clara more, and this is what she would want," and "I gave you the V1 because of Clara. Because that's what she would've wanted," are also spoken by Soldier Boy, leading to the two instances of similar dialogue and sentiment merging as they saw more use online in mid-May 2026, fueling the memetic catchphrase.
Spread
Following the release of episode 7 on May 13th, 2026, the phrase (though with slight variations) would spread across various social media platforms as users discussed the episode and used it to mock what they perceived as poor writing in the finale of The Boys.
On May 15th, 2026, Redditor StrandType discussed the phrase on the /r/TheBoys[3] subreddit, stating, "AS SOON as soldier boy said 'it’s what clara would have wanted' I just knew I was gonna see that shit plastered over every comment section as one of those hand wavey jokes when a series does bullshit like this."
The post received over 130 upvotes in about six days, sparking conversation and drawing comparisons to other infamous quotes such as Somehow Palpatine Returned from the film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
In the following days, the catchphrase would see increased usage in the show's fandom and dedicated subreddits as it continued to spread.
On May 16th, Redditor According-Ring-8678 posted a meme using the catchphrase to the /r/OkBuddyFresca[4] shitposting subreddit, which received over 500 upvotes in five days.
The same day, Redditor[5] PeacefulGamer2520 used the phrase on a different post to the same subreddit, which gained over 2,000 upvotes in five days.
Karl Urban References The Meme
On May 18th, 2026, Billy Butcher actor Karl Urban jokingly replied to backlash over the last season of The Boys from a viral video by Instagram[7] user @soupypoopy69, using the It's What Clara Would Have Wanted meme in his comment.
A screenshot of the exchange was then posted to the /r/TheBoys[6] subreddit by Redditor 2jzgte2005, which received over 22,000 upvotes in three days.
